My sister gave me this book as a birthday gift.

It only took me a total of 15 minutes, with pauses for digestion and thought, to finish reading it.

To be honest, considering what it is, it's way too expensive and extremely tiny.

Personally, I'm not overly fond of poetry, but I have to admit that these poems are rather lovely.

However, for the price I paid, I would have preferred to get a real, comprehensive poetry book.

I'm not a fan of those overhyped, overpriced "quote books" or "poetry books" that are only 20 pages long, with a 3 cm thick hardcover, a nice cover, and a $15 price tag.

That just seems like a rip-off to me.

In any case, it should be noted that all the negative comments I've made have absolutely nothing to do with Angelou's confidence, feminine elegance, or profound words.

She is still an amazing and talented writer, and this is just my honest opinion about the book itself.

The first two poems appealed to me the most, but the last stanza of the third one made me smile. One wishes for the strength, the self-confidence, and the pride of this black woman for all women.

One of my all-time favorite poems!

Growing up, I was constantly exposed to poetry. My mother is a writer and has published two poetry books of her own. To show the love of poetry in my family, my mother and father decided to name me after the famous author/poet Nikki Giovanni.

In the 5th grade, I performed this poem for a school function during Black History Month. Ever since then, I have always enjoyed reading it. This poem is such a wonderful piece of literature that no matter how many times I read it, it never gets old.

The voice of the woman in the poem is extremely strong. Maya Angelou doesn't specify that she is talking about one particular woman. When reading it, I always have the sense that she is referring to women as a whole. The message is powerful; the words she uses to describe this "woman" create a vivid image in your mind of who this woman might be.

She also does an excellent job with repetition. I usually don't like books or poems that rely on repetition throughout, but in this case, I feel it was executed in a way that only enhanced the beauty of the poem. Every time she wrote the line "I'm a woman phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, that's Me," it made me think back to the woman I had pictured in my mind.
