The poetry collection is a bilingual edition in English and German.
I had previously read "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou, which is highly recommended as one can learn more about a part of Maya Angelou's life there and some of these experiences can be found again in her poems.
However, her poems do not only deal with her own life, but also that of her ancestors and the history of slavery. Some begin tragically and end empowering, others are sexy and proudly show Maya Angelou's self-confidence. However, there are also poems that thematize her disappointment about always only being the lover for men.
Overall, it is a very diverse poetry collection in an understandable language. Highly recommended!

"You may write me down in history with your bitter, twisted lies. You may trop me in the very dirt. But still, like dust, I'll rise. "
This powerful statement reflects the indomitable spirit within us. No matter how others try to defame or degrade us with their false words and actions, we have the strength to overcome. Just like dust, which seems insignificant but can rise and float freely in the air, we too can rise above the challenges and hardships thrown our way.
History is often written by those in power, and sometimes the truth gets distorted. But that doesn't mean we should let their lies define us. We have the ability to rewrite our own stories, to prove them wrong with our actions and achievements. Even when we are pushed down, we can find the courage to get back up and keep moving forward.
So, let us not be discouraged by the negative opinions and actions of others. Instead, let us use them as fuel to rise higher and shine brighter. Like dust, we will rise and make our mark on the world.
Whenever I find myself feeling the weight of a misogynistic world pressing down on me, this is the very book that I will instinctively turn to. I will gently open this small collection consisting of just four poems and instantly draw upon the strength and power that only a truly phenomenal woman can possess. When the day comes that I have my own home and start to curate the books that I desire to have by my side, this particular volume will undoubtedly be among the very first that I seek out.
The words within these pages speak to my soul, as if they were written specifically for me. The poet's voice is like a guiding light in the darkness, offering me solace and inspiration. The lines, "They accuse me of livin' from day to day, but who are they kiddin'? So are they," resonate deeply within me, making me realize that we all have our own ways of getting by in this world.
And when I read, "My life ain't heaven but it sure ain't hell. I'm not on top but I call it swell," I am filled with a sense of acceptance and contentment. It reminds me that life is not always perfect, but that doesn't mean it can't be wonderful in its own way. This book is more than just a collection of poems; it is a source of strength and a reminder that I am not alone in this journey of life.

Phenomenal Woman is truly an outstanding piece of work. It is absolutely beautiful, with words that have the power to touch the deepest parts of our souls. Reading this poem makes me stand up so tall, fills me with a sense of pride and confidence. The emotions it evokes are so intense that it even gave me goosebumps. It is no wonder that Phenomenal Woman is one of my favourite poems. It celebrates the strength, beauty, and essence of a woman in the most profound way. Maya Angelou's words in this poem are like a powerful anthem, inspiring women everywhere to embrace their individuality and shine bright. Each line is a masterpiece, painting a vivid picture of a woman who knows her worth and is unafraid to show it to the world.
