However I am perceived and deceived,

however my ignorance and conceits may cloud my vision,

lay aside your fears that I will be undone,

for I shall not be moved. I stand firm in the face of all that comes my way.

No matter the judgments or misunderstandings, I rise above.

My spirit is unyielding, like a mountain that cannot be shaken.

I draw strength from within, from my own beliefs and values.

And as I continue on this journey of life,

I will not let the opinions of others determine my path.

I am a force to be reckoned with, and I shall rise.

Phenomenal Woman is truly one of my all-time favorite poems by Maya Angelou.

I have read it several times previously, yet I had never analyzed it from the perspective of a writer. This last time I read it, I was able to uncover so many more nuances about the content that Maya Angelou explored in her poem.

One of the most prominent elements that stood out while reading the poem is Maya Angelou's masterful use of repetition with the lines "I'm a woman, Phenomenally, Phenomenal Woman, That's me." This element aligns perfectly with what is discussed in chapter 5 of the Fletcher book regarding the author's voice. Through repetition, the author's voice becomes more vivid and engaging for us as readers. The main idea of the poem is continuously reverberating in our minds.

In the opening lines, "Pretty women wonder where my secret lies. I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size. But when I start to tell them, They think I'm telling lies," we can not only hear the author's voice but also envision her words, making the poem come alive.

I firmly believe that this poem can be an excellent tool for teaching writing to students. The overall theme of the poem centers around the author's self-perception and how phenomenal she is, regardless of what others might think or how hard she attempts to make them see the phenomenal woman she truly is. Students could be inspired to create their own poems, taking this theme and exploring how phenomenal they are. They should focus on ensuring that their voice shines through in the poem and, if possible, incorporate some repetition to enhance the impact.

"I write for the Black voice and for any ear which can hear it."

This profound statement was made by the author of this small yet remarkable book, who unfortunately passed away earlier this year. The book is a beautiful slim hardback, slightly wider than a typical paperback. It contains only one famous poem, Phenomenal Woman, by the great Maya Angelou. What makes this book truly special is that the poem is accompanied by reproductions of paintings of Tahitian women by Paul Gauguin, who died 25 years before Angelou was born. Despite the vast differences in time, culture, and location, this coupling is truly inspired. At the back of the book, there is a short one-sided biography of both the poet and the painter. Additionally, there is a list of titles of all the paintings, along with their dates and present locations.

Each double page spread features a painting by Gauguin, along with two lines, a couplet, or perhaps more, from Angelou's poem. Sometimes, there is an additional smaller reproduction. The choices of the paintings perfectly mirror the descriptions in the poem itself. They are so apt that one can read the book as if the paintings are illustrations for it. However, it should be noted that the paintings have an inner life and beauty of their own, glowing with color and vitality.

Maya Angelou was born "Marguerite Johnson", but her brother nicknamed her "Maya", meaning "mine", and the name stuck. She is a unique voice in poetry and is highly respected as a writer, performer, teacher, and director. She has left a powerful legacy. This poem is typical of her voice, and like much of her work, it benefits from narration. The words are simple, repetitive, rhythmic, and structured. There is a refrain that goes:

"I'm a woman,
Phenomenally,
Phenomenal woman,
That's me."

Both the poem and the paintings are filled with color and light, sensitivity and gentleness. There is also strength, power, vitality, knowledge, and a wry sense of humor. Her poem is truly inspirational and life-affirming.

"All of my work is meant to say, 'You may encounter many defeats but you must not be defeated.'"

This book may contain just one poem, but it is a lovely and precious addition to any collection. It allows readers to experience the beauty and power of Maya Angelou's words in a unique and captivating way.

I used to have a rather peculiar habit. I would walk around, quoting Phenomenal Women, and as I did so, I would thrust out my hips to one side.

At the same time, I would throw out my arms with my hands in what I thought were extremely sophisticated poses. One hand would be held higher than the other, and I would pucker my lips.

Looking back now, I realize that this behavior of mine must have been extremely annoying to all those who were unfortunate enough to be forced to witness it.

It's quite embarrassing to think about how I used to act so self-consciously and perhaps even a bit ridiculously. But it's also a part of my past that I can now laugh at and learn from.

I've come a long way since then and have become more confident in my own skin, without having to rely on such exaggerated poses and behaviors to feel good about myself.

The simplicity of the language used in the poems makes them accessible to readers of all ages and backgrounds. Yet, beneath the simplicity lies a profound depth of emotion and thought.

To celebrate Black History Month, I have made a commitment to only read books by black authors throughout the month of February 2021. This marks my twelfth read. It has been an enlightening and inspiring journey so far.

Maya Angelou is truly a goddess. Her works are a testament to her profound wisdom, strength, and literary genius. Her words have the power to move, heal, and transform. No one can change my mind about this. Her autobiographies, such as "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," offer a raw and honest account of her life experiences, dealing with themes of race, gender, and identity. Reading her books has given me a deeper understanding and appreciation of the black experience.

Angelou's poetry is equally captivating. Her verses are filled with vivid imagery, powerful emotions, and a unique cadence. They speak to the human condition and touch the hearts of readers from all walks of life. She is a master storyteller and a true icon of literature.

I am grateful for the opportunity to explore the works of Maya Angelou during Black History Month. Her books have enriched my life and broadened my perspective. I look forward to continuing my reading journey and discovering more amazing works by black authors.

Phenomenal Woman

I'm a woman, phenomenally. A phenomenal woman, that's me. The sun of my smile shines bright.

Weekend Glory
They move into condos, rising up over the ranks. They pawn their souls to the local banks, buying big cars they can't afford and riding around town acting bored. They accuse me of living from day to day, but who are they kidding? So are they. My life ain't heaven, but it sure ain't hell. I'm not on top, but I call it swell.

Our Grandmothers
I shall not be moved. You have tried to destroy me, and though I perish daily, I shall not be moved. She said, "But my description cannot fit your tongue, for I have a certain way of being in this world, and I shall not, I shall not be moved." When you learn, teach. When you get, give. As for me, I shall not be moved. However I am perceived and deceived, however my ignorance and conceits, lay aside your fears that I will be undone, for I shall not be moved. I stand firm in my beliefs and in who I am, a phenomenal woman who will not be swayed.

This is truly a remarkably short collection. It can be read in just 10 minutes. It contains the poems "Phenomenal Woman", "Still I Rise", "Weekend Glory", and "Our Grandmothers".

These four poems zero in on the issues of racism, sexism, and misogynoir, which is the hatred specifically directed at black women.

The metaphor of an ocean is employed in several of these works. I have interpreted this to signify that the discrimination envelops her. She has to "bear the tide", which means she must endure the pain and suffering that comes with it.

The power and depth within these poems are palpable, despite their brevity. They offer a poignant exploration of the experiences and challenges faced by black women in a society that often discriminates and marginalizes them.

Each poem seems to tell a story, painting a vivid picture of the struggles and the strength that lies within. It is a collection that leaves a lasting impression and invites further reflection on the important themes it addresses.

This poem is truly a remarkable celebration of womanhood. It delves deep into the essence of loving one's curves, of having the courage not to give a damn about what others may think. It emphasizes the importance of loving oneself unconditionally and always, always walking with one's head held high.

It is a feel-good poem that has the power to inspire and spur you into taking action. The words are so short, easy to understand, and yet so memorable. They are lovely and strong, like a gentle yet powerful force that can move mountains.

This poem is a beautiful reminder that we should all embrace our unique selves, love our bodies, and have the confidence to be who we are. It encourages us to break free from the shackles of society's expectations and to shine bright like a star.

In a world where we are often bombarded with messages that make us feel inadequate, this poem is a breath of fresh air. It gives us the strength and motivation to love ourselves and to live our lives to the fullest. ❤️❤️

Title: Phenomenal Woman

Author: Maya Angelou

Release Date: 17 January 1995

Rating: 5/5 stars

  When you learn, teach.
When you get, give.
As for me,

I will not be moved.

Just like with non-fiction, I don't normally read poetry. I've read snippets of Maya Angelou's poetry here and there, but this is the first time I've read her poems in their entirety. It's truly been an eye-opening experience.

These poems are so beautiful. They have a certain charm and elegance that is hard to put into words. The way she weaves her words together, creating vivid images and emotions, is simply remarkable.

  She said, But my description
cannot
fit your tongue, for
I have a certain way of being in this world.

I've read a lot of poetry for school and whatnot, but the tone of these poems are just something else entirely. She talks about hardship and struggles, yet somehow, Angelou still infuses her words with beauty and hope. It's as if she is saying that no matter what life throws at us, we can still find the good and the beautiful within it.

I think the emotions her poems invoke in people, is what all poets strive to do. They make us feel, they make us think, and they make us want to be better. I will definitely read more of her poetry in the future.

  They accuse me of livin'
from day to day,
But who are they kiddin'?
So are they.
