I came across this beautiful poem by Maya Angelou in a remarkable poetry anthology titled - A Poem for Every Night of the Year by Allie Esiri.

I had the pleasure of reading it at a community carol service.

Subsequently, my curiosity led me to investigate the author further, and I delved into her work 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings'.

Not long after Christmas in 2018, I decided to google the poem, and to my惊喜, I discovered that there was an illustrated children's book based on it - I simply couldn't resist!

I promptly ordered it online, and it journeyed all the way from England to my doorstep.

However, it sat on my shelf for almost a year before I truly revisited the poem.

The illustrations within the book depict a place of belonging and a haven of peace.

Then, I made yet another belated discovery - the book came with a CD.

Admittedly, it helps if you read this with someone else, as they might notice things that you overlook(!).

Finally, I was able to play the CD for the 2019 carols service. There is something profoundly moving about listening to the author read her own poem and understanding the inspiration behind it.

Peace My Brother,

Most of us, at our core, simply desire the fundamental human needs - a safe shelter over our heads, sufficient food to nourish our bodies, and a sense of security for ourselves and those we hold dear.

Yet, we often wonder why the world seems to be perpetually at war. Why are the power-hungry politicians of every nation permitted to draw us into never-ending chaos?

This poem is not only relevant but essential in the present times. It is needed by our leaders, who hold the power to make decisions that can shape the future of our world. It is also needed by all of humanity, as we strive to find a way towards a more peaceful existence.

Although peace may seem like an impossible dream at times, reading this beautiful poem can offer us some solace and perhaps even a glimmer of hope that, someday, it might just be achieved.

It's not a children's book.

My son picked this out at the library in the children's section. However, it's just not written for a child's level of understanding.

With phrases like 'we jubilate the precious advent of trust' and 'hate, which crouches breeding in dark corridors', this book reads like pretentious propaganda.

It makes me wonder why I am supposed to tell him what a Jainist is when I don't know myself.

As a parent, I want to be able to provide accurate and age-appropriate information to my child. But when faced with a book that is clearly not suitable for his age group, it becomes a challenge.

I believe that libraries should do a better job of categorizing books to ensure that children are not exposed to content that is too advanced or inappropriate.

Maybe there should be a better system in place to review and classify books to avoid situations like this.

Until then, it's up to parents to be vigilant and make sure that the books our children read are beneficial and enjoyable.
