I read Pamela Des Barres's first book, \\n I'm With The Band\\n, and didn't mind it enough to think I could move on to her follow-up. However, I soon realized that I should have stopped at the first one. As I listened to this audiobook, which was narrated by the author herself, the only part that didn't irritate me was the heartbreaking account of her father's passing. Pamela's voice broke and she choked up as she told the story, and it was impossible not to hear the pain of her loss, even after all these years. But that was the only redeeming factor. The rest of the book was a disaster. While Des Barres is somewhat entertaining in a flighty, ditzy kind of way, the truth is that she just isn't very bright. Yes, she went against the grain and did what she wanted with her life, which is admirable. She managed to get into music, acting, and now writing, but she did it more through notoriety than talent. And then there's the story of her marriage to Michael Des Barres. She constantly吹捧 him as an incredibly talented and amazing artist, but all I saw was a guy who was only able to step in at the last minute when the real talent walked away. His two most high-profile moments were playing the lead singer of a fictional band on WKRP in Cincinnati and filling in as the touring vocalist for a Duran Duran side project. He was basically a spoiled brat with a fancy title and no real substance. And don't even get me started on how they parented their only child. The mismanagement was简直令人难以置信. I winced as Pamela recounted the story of one failed therapist or school placement after another. Overall, this is just a cringe-worthy, awful book about two people who had more luck than they deserved, less intelligence than they needed, and very little talent. It's a slow-motion trainwreck of a rock 'n' roll lifestyle that I could have done without. It's just not worth the read.
