Diet culture has become a rather absurd phenomenon in recent times.

It often promotes extreme and sometimes even harmful ways of eating, all in the name of achieving a certain body image or following a particular trend.

People are bombarded with messages about what they should and shouldn't eat, creating unnecessary stress and anxiety around food.

Some diet cultures advocate for eliminating entire food groups, which can lead to nutritional deficiencies.

Others promote fad diets that are not sustainable in the long term.

Moreover, the focus on diet culture often overshadows the importance of overall health and well-being.

Rather than simply obsessing over what we put in our mouths, we should be considering factors such as regular physical activity, good sleep, and a positive mindset.

It's time to break free from the grip of diet culture and embrace a more balanced and healthy approach to eating and living.

"Kind of preaching to the choir" is an interesting expression. It implies that what is being said is already known or believed by the audience.

This phrase can be used in various situations. For example, when someone is giving a speech or presentation and is only telling the audience things they already agree with, it can be said that they are preaching to the choir.

However, it's important to note that just because the message may seem familiar to the audience doesn't mean it's not valuable. Sometimes, reinforcing existing beliefs can strengthen them and give the audience a sense of validation.

Additionally, even when preaching to the choir, there may be opportunities to offer new perspectives or expand on the existing ideas. This can help the audience to deepen their understanding and engage more fully with the topic.

In conclusion, while "preaching to the choir" may have a somewhat negative connotation, it can also be a useful and important part of communication.

While this book didn't contain anything truly revolutionary, it was still a breath of fresh air to read a healthy-living and weight loss book penned by someone who has actually walked the walk.

Unlike trainers and others who may have never had more than 5 lbs of extra fat on their bodies, the author of this book has personal experience with the challenges and triumphs of achieving a healthy lifestyle.

This makes the advice and insights in the book more relatable and practical. It's not just theoretical knowledge but real-life wisdom.

On a discouraging day, when you might be feeling down about your progress or lacking motivation, this book would be a great one to skim through again.

The author's story and the tips and strategies shared can serve as a source of inspiration and encouragement, helping you to stay on track and keep working towards your goals.

Overall, although it may not be a game-changer, this book offers valuable perspectives and can be a useful tool in your healthy-living and weight loss journey.

You gotta admire anyone who can lose weight and keep it off.

The personable Huckabee, with his Southern charm and folksy manner, tells how he did it. However, he ruins everything by blathering on about religion and politics.

On the plus side, I lost five pounds just from shuddering and rolling my eyes.

*Update - 5/22/15*

One star has been removed for Huckabee's defense of the child molester Josh Duggar. Huckabee is quoted as saying, "He and his family dealt with it and were honest and open about it with the victims and the authorities."

Snort! Yeah, they were open and honest by waiting a whole year to contact the police.

Huckabee, you son of a bitch!

You tell off the President for letting his daughter listen to Beyonce, but apparently a few sex crimes committed by a good Christian boy is a-okay in your book.

Exercise and eating right are good messages.

Although there is nothing new about them, they are always worth hearing again until something eventually sinks in.

I didn't know about him until the Iowa primaries. Then I checked out his bio and found this book by him. I was curious about it.

Exercise is essential for maintaining good health. It helps to strengthen our bodies, improve our cardiovascular function, and boost our immune system.

Eating right is also crucial. A balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins provides the nutrients our bodies need to function properly.

By following these simple guidelines, we can improve our overall well-being and live a healthier life.

So, let's all make a commitment to exercise regularly and eat right. It may not be easy at first, but with time and dedication, it will become a part of our daily routine.

This review is from: Quit Digging Your Grave with a Knife and Fork : A 12-Stop Program to End Bad Habits and Begin a Healthy Lifestyle (Hardcover)

Can you change a lifetime of unhealthy habits while having one of America's most stressful jobs? Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee shows that it's possible.

Michael Landon, in a well-known episode of Highway to Heaven, confronts an overweight teenager about her decision to eat a dozen donuts alone, suggesting that if she doesn't like her weight, she should do something about it. Thanks, Mike. I'm sure she never thought of that. Most advice for the overweight falls into the category of "Well intended, but unhelpful or even hurtful." Especially when it comes from people who have never struggled with weight beyond "losing a few extra pounds before an event." So, I was very skeptical about Mike Huckabee's book.

I've known about the weight loss book "Quit Digging Your Grave With Your Knife and Fork" for a while, but I avoided reading it. The title was intimidating from the start. Moreover, the book was written by a politician, Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, who was also a former Baptist preacher. I expected that if you picked up this book, you would get advice as harsh as the title sounds, along with some big government ideas for fixing healthcare. Additionally, the idea of learning self-discipline from a politician seemed absurd.

However, you can't judge a book by its title, and Governor Huckabee's "Quit Digging Your Grave" is a prime example. Huckabee isn't a doctor and doesn't pretend to be. While there are some basic nutritional tips in the book, like avoiding transfats and fatty meats, this book isn't part of a formal Huck-a-diet with meal plans, shakes, and chocolate-flavored Huckabars. Huckabee intends his book to "supplement and not supplant" whatever diet you're on.

Huckabee's book combines inspiration and practical steps needed to create a healthy lifestyle rather than just dieting. The inspiration part is straightforward. Huckabee was a very overweight governor who, at 47, was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and was told he had only a decade left to live. He couldn't even climb a flight of stairs without getting out of breath. But Huckabee lost 110 pounds and has competed in both the Little Rock and Boston marathons.

In politics, where image is crucial, Huckabee is refreshingly honest about the pain and embarrassment of being overweight. He shares stories like how an antique chair broke under his weight in a cabinet meeting and how nervous he was about people seeing him run in his first 5K race. Huckabee's honesty makes him relatable as a reader. You don't feel like you're being preached to by a thin or athletic person, but rather by someone who has been in your shoes.

Huckabee is a fun and engaging author. It'll be tempting to read the book in one sitting. It's not overly complicated or heavy. But the best way to read this book is in small doses.

Huckabee's book has twelve stops, which are things you need to stop doing to succeed in losing weight.

Three of them were particularly impactful for me.

Chapter 1: Stop Procrastinating was remarkable as Huckabee detailed his elaborate web of excuses. Most obese people will be familiar with them. The difference is that as a governor, Huckabee had even more excuses.

The most powerful part of that chapter was when Huckabee described the success he achieved. As governor, he had tasted some of the best food from top chefs and great restaurants around the world. But he said, "Nothing tastes as good as being healthy." I try to remember that every time I think about breaking my diet. "If Huckabee said Chicago pizza didn't taste as good as being healthy, why am I thinking about that cupcake?"

Huckabee's Twelfth Stop: "Stop Neglecting Your Spiritual Health" is something you might expect from a former Baptist minister. However, Huckabee tries to be as inclusive as possible and is quite cautious about it. The point that came through to me is that we are valuable to God, His creation. Our lives are valuable to Him and are certainly worth more than all the boxes of soda crackers in the world.

The rest of the book is filled with simple, common-sense wisdom. The essence of the book is to encourage you to make a lifestyle change, not just go on a diet, to strive for lifetime fitness rather than a specific weight number, and to stop using food as a reward (especially for achieving a weight loss goal).

Regarding government, Huckabee believes its role in the weight issue should be minimal. He's against government being "the grease police," but he favors more positive steps like giving state employees walking breaks, similar to how other employees are allowed smoking breaks.

If I had to offer one criticism, it's that Huckabee tells a few cheesy jokes, like the old one about asking for a second opinion when the doctor said he was fat. Other than that, Huckabee's book achieves what it sets out to do, which is to provide encouragement and inspiration to those looking to get fit.

This is a VERY good book about health.

I have been aware of low carb eating for some time now. However, I discovered a great deal more through this book. After borrowing it from the library, I purchased it for myself on Amazon for just a dollar.

This lifestyle alteration has worked wonders for my hypoglycemia. I haven't experienced low blood sugar for six weeks and I feel absolutely fabulous.

The book provides in-depth knowledge and practical tips on maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle. It offers valuable insights into the benefits of low carb eating and how it can positively impact various aspects of our health.

Whether you are already familiar with low carb eating or just starting to explore this area, this book is definitely worth reading. It can help you make informed decisions about your diet and improve your overall well-being.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in taking control of their health and making positive lifestyle changes.

I am aware that there are some individuals who will simply walk past this book. The reason being that it was penned by former Arkansas Governor and a potential Presidential candidate, Mike Huckabee. I can't really say that I fault you for this. In fact, I would likely not read a diet book authored by Hilary Clinton either. However, trust me on this. If you find yourself in a situation where you desperately need to make a significant life change regarding your health, then it would be advisable to set aside your political views for a few days. After all, this is a relatively quick read. You should take the time to read about how this man not only managed to lose a substantial amount of weight but has also been able to maintain that weight loss.

Based on the AA 12 Steps program, Huckabee presents 12 STOPS that are designed to assist you in overcoming your eating issues.

I have perused numerous diet books over the years, but this one is among the two that have actually proven effective for me. There's a good chance that it might work for you as well.
