I read this when it first came out and remember thinking it was fantastic. I actually just recently took the hardback off my shelves when culling some book for donation. A great review of this book just popped up which triggered me to see if I had added this to my read books. Somehow I missed it when I went through my shelves of books already read.

En sevdiğim romanlardan biridir.

Reading Shogun reminded me this gem that I first came across in my teenage years. I don’t know how much of its satire I caught back then but was a page turner for me just as a spy thriller. I still have a lot to learn about Go even after decades I first found it out. five stars for blowing my mind as a teenage boy way back.

Daha çok Teksas Tommiks serilerini deste deste alırdım ve diğer süper kahraman çizgi romanları, Kızılmaske, Süpermen gibi. Sıcak sular tarafında mı yoksa Sakarya yanında bi arasokakta mı çıkaramadım şimdi. Hay bin kunduz! Profesör Oklitus gibi kayboldum. Neyse arada Jason Bourne, Şogun, Şibumi gibi güzel gerilim maceralar da çıkardı. Ergen oğlan olarak okuyunca Şibumi aklımı başımdan almıştı. Aynı yaz Travenian’ın Katya’nın Yazı da devirince tersim dönmüştü iyice. Şibumi okurken Fuseki ne ki Sabaki ne ola ki diye epey Meydan Larousse karıştırmıştım. Sonra bazı klasiklerin çevirilerini de ilk orda buldum sanırım. NŞA da para yetiştirip alamıcan kitapları yüzde on fiyatına al oku getir. Kim düşünüp açtıysa ozaman ruhu şad olsun.

Yazarın derin bilgeliği ve Belkıs Çorakçı'nın nefis çevirisiyle çok nadir denk gelen bir okuma keyfi yaşadım. Nicholai Hel'in Bask'lı arkadaşı Le Cagot'yla mağarada kapana kısıldıkları kısım, yaşanan ölümler doğrusu beni hüzünlendirdi. Hakeza Hel'in şatosunun enkazı üzerinde gezindiği kısımlar. Gençliğinde üvey babasıyla kiraz bahçelerinde yaptığı konuşmalar...

Kitabın orta kısmından itibaren ister istemez sonrası için bazı tahminlere girişmiştim ama her defasında tahminim yanlış çıktı.
Şibumi nasıl bir roman? Tarif etmesi zor. Büyüleyiciliği nereden kaynaklanıyor?
Kitabın üçte ikisi geçmişle ilgili. Asıl düğüm günümüzde yaşanan hadiselerde çözülse de başkarakterin geçmişi büyük bir yer tutuyor romanda. Ama bu flashbackler romanı ilginç biçimde zayıflatmıyor, tersine güçlendiriyor. Tıkır tıkır işleyen bir kurgu tabiri bu romana hiç olmadığı kadar yakışıyor. Özellikle ilk üçte birlik kısımda kahramanın hayat hikayesi ile Amerika'daki olaylar arasında gelip giderken anlatım baş döndürücü bir hal alıyor.
Şibumi'de beni en çok etkileyen şey karakterlerin derinlikleriydi. Japon general, Go ustası, Le Cagot, hatta yan karakterlerde Hanna ve bahçıvan bile çok gerçekçi çizilmiş; hepsinin bir hikayesi, hayat felsefesi, konuşma tarzı, zaafları var. Tabii en başta da Nicholai Hel. Bazılarınca mistik sayılabilecek yetenekleriyle, Alman-Rus karışımı genleriyle, Japonya kültürüyle yoğrulan benliğiyle kimi basit romanlarda resmedilen kusursuz, yüzeysel karakterlerden biri değil o. Trevanian, Nicholai Hel gibi olağanüstü bir kişilikle basitliği, bayalığı eleştirmek istemiş bana göre. Amerika ve Amerikalılar hakkında sayfalarca eleştiri yaparken bu yoz kültürün karşısına güçlü bir rakip koyması gerekirdi. Romanın bir yerinde neden böyle bir karakter yarattığına dair ipucu da veriyor zaten.
Kısacası, okuma serüvenimi Şibumi öncesi ve sonrası diye ikiye ayırsam abartmış olmam.

Ho davvero tentato di dare un voto anche poco più alto a Shibumi, ma questo libro per me è semplicemente insalvabile.
Non è per via della scrittura, in buon equilibrio fra lo scorrevole e l'elaborato. Non è per i rimandi alla cultura giapponese, che sono risultati interessanti al mio inesperto occhio occidentale. Non è la critica feroce all'Occidente e all'America, la quale non mi ha mai disturbato più di tanto. Non è nemmeno il profondo sessismo di cui questo libro è permeato.
E' il suo procedere per stereotipi ed esagerazioni che non posso tollerare: 560 pagine costellate da personaggi talmente scontati da risultare patetici oltre che privi di qualsiasi tridimensionalità.

Tutta la vicenda ruota intorno alla figura di Nicholai Hel, l'esempio più eclatante di Gary Stu in cui mi sia imbattuta della mia carriera di lettrice. Hel è raffinatissimo, intelligentissimo, affascinantissimo. Parla cinque lingue, è un talentuoso giocatore di go, uno speleologo provetto, un amante indimenticabile nonché un mistico in grado di sviluppare un senso di prossimità così assurdo da assumere tutti i connotati del superpotere. Attorno a lui ruotano una molteplicità di personaggi altrettanto piatti: La raffinata cortigiana, la ragazzina viziata ma spontanea, il nobile guerriero giapponese, il poeta patetico. Nessuno di loro riesce mai ad uscire dal tracciato di queste categorie. MAI.
La stessa vicenda è così prevedibile che il lettore medio è tranquillamente in grado di profetizzarne la conclusione a partire da pagina 300, tanto che mi sono dovuta imporre di finirlo solo per rispetto all'amico che me lo ha gentilmente prestato.

Davvero, l'unico consiglio che posso darvi è di non sprecare dietro a quest'accozzaglia di ovvietà e testosterone neanche un minuto del vostro tempo.

Kesinlikle sevmedim.

Yazar, birkaç kısımda, okuyucuya, kitap ve baş karakter hakkında ne düşünmesi gerektiğini söylüyor, resmen okuyucuya karışıyor, okuyucuyla muhatap oluyor.

Zaten baş karakterin ve şatodaki hanım arkadaşının üstün niteliklerle donanmış olması okuyucuyu itiyor. Bu karakterlerin derinlikleri yok, sadece birtakım zorluklardan geçip hayatta kalabildiklerini ve birkaç ırkın özelliklerini birden taşıdıklarını biliyoruz ama kendi kendilerini eğiten karakterler için fazla seçkinler.

Kitap baştan sona çok ırkçı, Amerikan kültürünü biz de çok sevmeyiz ama bu kadar da ayan beyan ırkçı ifadeler beni çok rahatsız etti. Amerikan, Arap ve Fransız halklarıyla ilgili çok çirkin ifadeler var.

Kitap kesinlikle cinsiyetçi.

Go oyunuyla ilgili bir roman olduğunu biliyordum ve tüm kitabın bir Go oyunu hamleleriyle ilerlediğini duymuştum. Okumadan önce bir oyunla çok fazla ilgili olacağından ve çok fazla teknik terim okuyacağımdan kuşkulanıyordum ama Go oyunundan neredeyse hiç bahsedilmiyordu.

Kitap, çok fazla şey sunacağını söylüyor, kendi kendine bunu söylemesi bile çirkin. Baş karakterin trans anlarına daha çok eğilse, "şibumi" anlayışı ile ilgili daha içsel birkaç şey söyleyebilse belki de çok severdim. Ama büyük bir hayal kırıklığı oldu bu roman, tamamen popüler kültüre "Sizin kültürünüzü eleştirecek ve size yine hazır bir felsefe sunacağım, siz de bunu kapış kapış alacaksınız..." diyerek yazmış ve bu kitabı okumanın "cool" sayılacağını tasarlamış gibiydi yazar. Ne yazık ki sevmedim, keşke sevseydim de güzel bir kitap okumuş olsaydım, "Herkes beğeniyor, o yüzden ben beğenmemeliyim..." burnubüyüklüğü değil bu, resmen hayal kırıklığı.

another trevanian story about an assassin, nicholai hel, this time. also drawn back into a life he has tried to leave, killing folk. story looks at his life at a young age, things that happened, things that made him who he is. not your typical summer vacation story.

hel also loves language which is nice. trevanian plays w/that some. shibumi is a kind of 'effortless perfection' and that helped him out in life, that striving toward that goal

lots of interesting situations that trevanian places his characters. great story. good read.

Nicolai (Nikko) Hel is a one of a kind man caught in uncommon circumstances. When he and his mother are trapped in China during the Japanese invasion, they are accepted into the home of a Japanese general of administration who takes a liking to Nikko (known more commonly as Hel). He teaches the boy many languages, including the art of Shibumi, which is more than simply the knowledge of things, but rather the 'understanding' of things.

Over the course of the war and Japan's eventual surrender, Hel finds himself without a country. Being half-Russian, he is suspect among conquering Americans, who learn to accept him because of his multi-linguistic capabilities. His knowledge of martial arts helps him during meditation periods after he spends a time in prison. Upon his eventual release, Americans use his skills to infiltrate enemy organizations, and Hel soon becomes an efficient killer. But Hel takes revenge on those who have thrust him into this life of murder-for-hire. And when a man seeking revenge for the loss of his brother by Hel's hands, Nikko Hel's quiet, dignified life in the Spanish Basque mountains is suddenly turned upside down. It will take all of his skills to survive and possible seek to 'quiet' those who would dare challenge him.

This book was recommended to me by my son, who has this copy in his collection. It's the sort of story one keeps for another read. The reader is transported to pre-WWII China, Japan during and after the war, and eventually Europe where Hel has made his life. The characters are colorful and illuminating. I was left to wonder if this sort of person actually existed, and would not be all surprised if there are. Written in 1979, this book like so many proves a story is timeless.

400 pages of trendy (at the time it was written), pretentious, intellectual elitism, 15 genuinely gripping pages of action, wrapped up with 30 more pages of bashing America, capitalism, globalism, democracy, Christianity, and well, pretty much the whole of Western civilization under the facade of anti-materialism.

Instead the author promotes the Eastern idealism of Shibumi, a philosophy created, espoused, and maintained by the Japanese landed-aristocracy. Not that anything in this book is even remotely close to "understated beauty" or "an effortless state of perfection". Instead, Nicholai Hel is much more like a vision of the Marquis de Sade, acquiring all the wealth and power he needs to achieve freedom unrestrained by morality, religion or law; to be free of all concerns or doubts or hesitations, so free that society itself adapts to service him as he lives his idealized medieval aristocratic lifestyle.

"Thelema" would have been a much more appropriate title than "Shibumi".

I cannot, for the life of me, resume what SHIBUMI is about. If you think it's a spy thriller, you're a fool. If you think this is a spoof, you're slightly more enlightened but you're still narrow minded. It's the masterpiece, the time-defying work of an enlightened soul with democratic intentions. Trevanian is a literary writer, yet he sturctures his stories in a way for most people to feel intelligent and enlightened. Most important, it's a vehicle for his opinions and passions.

To keep it simple, it's structured around the principle of the Japanese game of GO,which has been known to be a framework of thoughts of the great warlords. What happens to Nicholai Hel in this movie is filtered through his state of mind and separated like the movements of a Go game. Enlightening, stimulating read for the curious mind. Very impressive character study. In fact, it might be the most impressive I have ever read. A stunning work.

Το Go μου κέντρισε το ενδιαφέρον για αυτό το βιβλίο! Ευτυχώς το πήρα και το διάβασα σχεδόν απνευστι !!!
