However, at this stage, Kit comes across as a little too emotional and crazy for my liking. I find myself wishing that the book would have placed more focus on Joe and his more straightforward sleuthing. It feels as if the author is gradually leading us back around to the Catswold Portal, perhaps hinting at something more significant to come.

Overall, while the story has its interesting aspects, the scattered plot and Kit's excessive emotions make it a bit of a mixed bag for me. I'm curious to see how the author will tie everything together and what lies ahead in the Catswold Portal.

At its heart are three remarkably intelligent cats that drive the narrative forward as they strive to solve the mysteries. It's my first encounter with this series by Shirley Rousseau Murphy, and I'm certain it won't be my last. The mystery is masterfully plotted, albeit on the darker side, as it delves into themes of missing and exploited children, all set in motion by the death of an aging film star.

The human characters are well-developed and serve their purposes in the story. However, their development is in relation to the cats who are the true stars. Joe Grey, the self-proclaimed ringleader of these sleuths, has a distinct manner, complete with an eye for the "fantastical imaginings" of the females he meets. His romantic interests lie with Dulcie, one of the two female felines in his group. She is the more centered and grounded of the two, yet she harbors a massive secret. Kit witnessed the first murder, though she never saw the killer's face. Unsurprisingly, the humans are oblivious to the fact that these cats not only can talk but are actively working to solve the mysteries uncovered in this story.

The narration by Susan Boyce is spectacular. Her voice is perfectly modulated, using pacing and inflection rather than excessive vocal manipulations to distinguish the characters. The dreamy quality of Kit's voice and the sometimes exasperated tone of Joe Grey are particularly effective. Her narration is smooth and easy to understand, with inflections and tone variations that are a perfect match for the text.

The writing is so cleverly crafted that the listener/reader doesn't even notice the lack of greater interaction from the humans. There are enough twists and dead-end clues to keep the mystery alive. It's not a simple, straightforward mystery leading directly to the killer. With the clever interjections from the cats and the humans involved in their investigations, this story flew by and was thoroughly enjoyable.

Despite the lack of some elements that might have made the story more thrilling, the development of the characters was so well done that it more than made up for it.
