This book has been an eye-opening experience for me. It has taught me in-depth about what the Middle East crisis is truly all about.

It also clearly explains the role that America has played in the Middle East. The book accurately describes the essence of the Iraq war and the reasons behind America's foreign policy, which unfortunately has ignited violence and hatred towards it.

It is truly astonishing to realize that a government could lie to such an extent for the sake of power. Through reading this book, I have gained a better understanding of the complex and often controversial issues in the Middle East, and it has made me think more deeply about the consequences of political decisions.

I believe that more people should read this book to have a more accurate and comprehensive view of the Middle East situation and the role of various countries in it.

A Superb Revelation of Hidden Truths behind Masked Democracy

Both Chomsky and Achcar offer an incredibly insightful exposition of the main dynamics within the Arab World and the Middle East specifically. Their work is a superb revelation of the many truths that are often hidden behind the facade of so-called democracy. The dialogue between them holds a profound significance, as it allows us to gain a deeper understanding of the complex political, social, and economic issues at play in this region.

I highly recommend reading this work whenever you have the inclination to listen to two of the most respected gurus in the world of politics exchanging thoughts in a flowing and spontaneous manner. Their insights are not only thought-provoking but also offer valuable perspectives that can help us to better understand the world we live in. Whether you are a student of politics, a concerned citizen, or simply someone who is interested in learning more about the Middle East, this dialogue is sure to provide you with a wealth of information and food for thought.

Released 17 years ago, a significant portion of the analysis in this book has become outdated as it fails to apply to the present era. Iraq, Israel, Iran, and Afghanistan have all witnessed both heart-wrenching and remarkable changes.

Although the events have diversified, the same fundamental problems endure. And there is one major issue that appears to be eternal - namely, US Foreign Policy.

Chomsky, a prominent figure in international leftism, offers acute, insightful, and well-connected analyses. Achcar, whom I had never encountered before, presents some astonishingly intelligent points, informed by his extensive knowledge of the situation. Together with Shalom, they have crafted a remarkably readable book, adhering to plain and simple language.

However, my one gripe is that much of it remains undefined. They often rapidly descend to a level of depth that only experienced observers can comprehend - with name-drops, situations, and ideologies, etc. While this is understandable in a conversation between two formidable academics, the editor could have created a glossary or provided explanations in his own words.

Nonetheless, this is an excellent book that serves two purposes: 1) as an intermediary introduction and 2) as a deeper exploration of issues such as Iraq, the Israel-Palestine conflict, terrorism, and US foreign policy. It is a great read.

A truly remarkable debate/dialogue book exists between Noam Chomsky and Gilbert Achcar, which is "moderated" (or at least somewhat kept on track) by Steven Shalom, who is no intellectual lightweight himself.

Noam Chomsky and Gilbert Achcar are both highly outstanding thinkers. It is an absolute pleasure to gain an inside perspective on their thought processes. There are indeed some truly spectacular moments within the book. In these moments, both Chomsky and Achcar are collaborating to work out theories, all the while modifying each other's views.

This interaction between two brilliant minds provides readers with a unique opportunity to witness the evolution of ideas and the power of intellectual exchange. It enriches our understanding of various complex topics and challenges us to think more deeply about the world around us. The book serves as a valuable resource for those interested in exploring the前沿思想 and engaging in meaningful intellectual discussions.

This is an interesting and at times challenging analysis of contemporary events in the Middle East and US policy, which was published in 2007.

That makes it old enough to be read retrospectively, yet recent enough to give its analysis of the situation in Iraq and Syria a particular poignancy. It is depressing to observe that in the 8 years since then, things have mostly worsened.

Much of the analysis is not very surprising to an attentive watcher of the news with some historical awareness. The form of the book, a transcribed dialogue, perhaps does not lend itself to very deep insights. However, it is a debate between two well-informed, albeit somewhat biased, observers. They sometimes fail, in their analysis of US policy, to apply Hanlon's Razor - "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." Chomsky also has a tendency to burst out in colorful rants.

But on the whole, it is an engaging dissection of years of rather unsuccessful foreign policy and military intervention. The big lesson seems to be that you cannot have a successful foreign policy if you do not understand the people for whom it is their domestic policy; that local motives and pressures will always assert their power over decisions made (and illusions fostered in) foreign capitals, no matter how powerful the people there think themselves to be.

This analysis provides valuable food for thought and serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding the complex dynamics at play in international relations.

A book that tells a conversation which is really interesting.

It may not be a great book on Middle East politics if someone is looking for a super essay.

However, it does provide a sketch of why things happen as they do and some brave criticisms of the foreign policies of Western imperialist countries.

This book offers a different perspective and can make readers think about the complex issues in the Middle East.

Although it may not be a comprehensive and in-depth analysis, it still has its value in presenting some important ideas and views.

It can serve as a starting point for further exploration and study of the Middle East region and its politics.

Overall, it is a book that is worth reading for those who are interested in understanding the Middle East and its geopolitical situation.

I was deeply impressed by the way it was presented. It was not just a one-sided narrative but rather a lively discussion among eminent persons. They meticulously took apart and examined every single facet of the situation. From the political intrigues to the social implications, no stone was left unturned.

Moreover, throughout this exploration, they also presented a potential way out for both America and the people in the Middle East. It offered a glimmer of hope in a region that has been marred by conflict and turmoil for far too long. This book is not only a valuable contribution to the understanding of the Middle East but also a thought-provoking piece that challenges us to think about solutions and a more peaceful future.

The relationship between the United States and the Middle East is a complex one, marked by both cooperation and conflict. While the United States has provided economic and military assistance to some Middle Eastern countries, it has also been involved in military interventions and regime changes that have disrupted the region and caused great harm to its people.
