This concise book presents a transcript of a radio interview with Chomsky shortly following the September 11 attacks. I recall being in Sydney in late 2001 when a friend of mine noticed this book and commented, 'I'm not surprised Chomsky has already written a book about September 11th'. At that time, I had never heard of Chomsky, but that ignorance has since been rectified.

I'm not astonished that Chomsky released a book promptly either. The event was such a profound psychological shock to the United States that its citizens were eager for answers. Moreover, Chomsky, a long-time critic of American foreign policy, had to swiftly bring his views on this atrocity to the forefront. Regrettably, Chomsky is not Fox News or CNN, which implies that his views often remain in the background, being ridiculed and attacked for their supposed irrelevance.

There isn't much that can be said about this book that hasn't been said about any of his other works. Once again, it tends to adhere to the same theme of American hegemony and the undermining of the democratic order. In this book, he specifically focuses on the events of September 11th and, in particular, why it wasn't strictly an unexpected event. He also proceeds to defend his position, demonstrating that the events in New York on that day have done nothing to alter it.

Violence and killing have no justifications. However, the policy of the United States in the region breeds more terrorists and even increases them.

It was possible for America to take legal actions to punish the terrorists responsible for 9/11. But it chose collective punishment for the poor Afghans instead. So I don't think the United States would have done what it did in Afghanistan if it were a powerful country.

The actions of the United States have brought great pain and destruction to the people of Afghanistan. Innocent civilians have suffered, and their lives have been turned upside down.

The international community should condemn such actions and call on the United States to take responsibility for its actions and make amends for the harm it has caused.
