What is this that I just read?

I really wished I'd paid more attention in Ms Golson's class!

It seems that I'm completely lost when it comes to understanding this text.

Maybe if I had listened carefully during her lectures, I would have had a better chance of making sense of it.

Now, I'm left here scratching my head, wondering how I could have been so careless in the past.

Ms Golson always emphasized the importance of paying attention, but I guess I didn't take her words seriously enough.

Well, this is a valuable lesson for me.

From now on, I'll make sure to focus in class and not let myself get distracted.

Hopefully, with more effort and attention, I'll be able to improve my understanding and not have to face such confusion again.

Traditional conte transposed in the American West. Where a bandit abducts a beautiful young woman, a stepmother tries at all costs to harm her, a very kind father but well aware of his daughter's flaws, all seasoned with very charming sidekicks. Between Snow White and Beauty and the Beast, not knowing the original tale from which this story is drawn, I can only very roughly draw this comparison.

The style imitates the narrative framework of traditional tales with repetitions of turns of phrase, a refrain, emblematic figures, not to say caricatural of the tale very little deviated from. It is doubtless this touch of madness that was lacking in this story, a little too close to the model to be original and deserve that I remember it more than as a good moment of relaxed reading. Perfect for a holiday reading, without headache and quickly dispatched.

Pulitzer Prize winning Welty's literary fiction has always intrigued me. Her works are known for their rich characters, vivid settings, and profound themes. However, this particular piece was a bit too fanciful for my taste.

The story seemed to veer off into the realm of the supernatural and the improbable, which made it difficult for me to fully engage with the characters and their experiences. While I appreciate Welty's creativity and imagination, I found myself longing for a more grounded and believable narrative.

Despite this, I still recognize the value of Welty's writing and the contributions she has made to the world of literature. Her works continue to inspire and influence generations of writers, and I look forward to exploring more of her fiction in the future.

I think I might be getting dumber because what on earth was the point of all this?

Okay, I understand the setting and the main characters of the novella, but what the hell were all those terrible racist remarks towards Native Americans? It's really unacceptable.

I already know that these people are not nice, but there's no need to mention it on almost every other page. Can't they just shut up?

It's really frustrating to read such content. It makes me question the author's intention.

Maybe they were trying to show the reality of that time, but still, there are better ways to do it without being so offensive.

I hope that in the future, more writers will be more sensitive and respectful when dealing with such topics.

I'm not entirely certain about my thoughts on this.

It had a rather strange feel to it, almost as if Snow White had crossed paths with Mike Fink, and then the Indians from Peter Pan were thrown into the mix.

The story was written in an old fairytale style, which made it a quick and somewhat dizzying read.

I must admit that I did like the ending. It was quite satisfying. However, the journey to get there was quite the adventure.

There were times when I was completely confused by the events and the characters' actions.

But overall, it was an interesting and unique read that kept me engaged until the very end.

Despite its flaws, I'm glad I took the time to read it and experience this strange and wonderful world that the author had created.

A more modern take on a gruesome Grim fairy tale, with romance and tall tale Americans thrown in for good measure. This was much more fun than I expected.

The story presented a unique blend of elements. The gruesome aspects of the Grim fairy tale were given a contemporary twist, making it both chilling and captivating. The addition of romance added a touch of warmth and tenderness, creating a nice contrast. And the tall tale Americans brought a sense of humor and larger-than-life charm to the narrative.

As I delved into the story, I found myself completely engrossed. The modern interpretation made the familiar fairy tale feel fresh and exciting. The romance between the characters was developed in a believable and engaging way, making me root for their happily ever after. The tall tale Americans added an element of adventure and excitement, keeping me on the edge of my seat.

Overall, this modern take on a Grim fairy tale was a delightful read. It combined the best of both worlds - the darkness and mystery of the original with the light-heartedness and fun of modern storytelling. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and entertaining read.

Having delved into the original fairy tale that served as a loose inspiration for this story, I was filled with intrigue to explore both the novella and musical of The Robber Bridegroom.

However, my overall impression is rather lukewarm.

Let me clarify: I'm not at all surprised that the novella isn't more widely renowned in the present day. In certain aspects, it doesn't age gracefully, and I suspect that some readers might find the central love story more disconcerting than romantic.

The musical, on the other hand, does a better job of both highlighting the humor within the story and eliminating some of the more disturbing details present in the novella. From that perspective, it is indeed entertaining.

Nevertheless, both versions place an excessive reliance on the unfortunate, hapless idiot who is married to a shrewish wife. While this can potentially be humorous, at least for this particular reader, it surprisingly fell flat.

Truth be told, I had truly expected to like these works more than I actually did. Consequently, I cannot recommend them.

A fever dream of a book. It is a fairy tale, yet as violent as the most bloodthirsty traditional fairy tale.

I must admit that I didn't enjoy the violence within its pages. It was rather disturbing and left a sour taste in my mouth.

Moreover, I really objected to a particular aspect. When a girl had been kidnapped and raped by a bandit, and then they were referred to as lovers. This seemed completely inappropriate and went against my sense of morality and what is right.

How could such a heinous act be romanticized or brushed aside so easily? It made me question the author's intentions and the message that was being conveyed.

Overall, while the book may have had some elements that could be considered interesting or unique, these flaws greatly detracted from my enjoyment of it.

I found myself constantly cringing at the violence and being appalled by the treatment of the female character.

It is a pity that a story with such potential was marred by these issues.

This book was not the absolute worst book I have ever read in my entire life. However, it was also nowhere near being the best one.

If I had the freedom to choose books on my own, I would not have selected this one. I was compelled to read it for my Southern Lit class.

Welty's approach here is quite unconventional as she writes in the fairytale genre. In my personal opinion, Rosamond appears to be giving her consent to what could be considered a form of "rape" (I use this term very cautiously because I'm truly unsure whether she consented or not. Welty uses the word "robbed" to describe what Jamie did take from her. She states that he "ROBBED HER FROM WHAT HE HAD NOT TAKEN THE NIGHT BEFORE."). This aspect could potentially be triggering for other readers.

Another issue that I have a problem with is the terrible dehumanization of Native Americans. I'm aware that this is a common theme in classic Southern Literature, but I still felt extremely ashamed to be reading about it. It makes me question the values and perspectives that were prevalent during the time when this literature was written.

Overall, while the book may have some redeeming qualities, these two aspects really detract from the overall reading experience for me.

There is truly nothing that can compare to a Southern Gothic fairytale, and likewise, there is nothing quite like Eudora Welty's remarkable writing.

After delving into the fascinating correspondence between Welty and William Maxwell, I eagerly retrieved a couple of her volumes from my personal collection. I then dedicated a morning to indulging in The Robber Bridegroom.

Right from the start, there are distinct elements of the Brothers Grimm, which perhaps isn't entirely unexpected considering its title. In fact, the novel (or is it a novella?) commences almost like a bedtime story. It is set in a place that is far, far away and dates back several centuries. The narrative voice is enchanting, lilting, and truly lovely.

Welty's writing is at times deceptively simple, yet it is always deeply intelligent. Her story unfolds in a truly marvellous manner. Her character descriptions are so vivid that they seem to leap off the page and come to life.

The Robber Bridegroom stands as one of the most inventive and original novels that I firmly believe I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Welty has an incredible hold over her characters and settings, and everything is exquisitely evoked, transporting the reader into a world of her own creation.
