How to Use the Scriptures in Child Training

Rec. by Ann Voskamp, this article presents some good thoughts and challenges regarding the significance of using Scripture in child raising. It emphasizes the importance of incorporating the teachings of the Bible into the daily lives of children. By doing so, parents can help their children develop a strong moral and ethical foundation.

However, there are a few questionable statements in the article that would prevent me from recommending it without caveat. These statements may cause confusion or misinterpretation among readers. It is essential to approach the use of Scripture in child training with care and discernment.

Overall, while the article has some valuable insights, it is crucial to consider the potential drawbacks as well. Parents should always seek to understand the full context of the Scriptures and use them in a way that is appropriate for their children's age and development.

It is the parent's job to teach the Word to our kids.

Parents play a crucial role in guiding their children towards a deeper understanding and connection with the Word. This responsibility extends to every area of a child's life.

In the home, parents can create a nurturing environment where the Word is regularly discussed and applied. They can read the scriptures together, have family devotions, and use everyday situations as teaching opportunities to impart the values and teachings of the Word.

Outside the home, parents can encourage their kids to participate in church activities, youth groups, and Bible studies. They can also model a life of faith and integrity, showing their children how to live out the Word in their daily interactions with others.

By teaching the Word to our kids in every area, we are equipping them with the tools they need to grow in their faith and become disciples of Christ. It is a privilege and a responsibility that we should take seriously as parents.

Great book!

This is truly an excellent piece of work. While there were a few things within its pages that I didn't entirely agree with, on the whole, it presents some really great concepts and offers wonderful encouragement for teaching our children using the Scriptures.

It's a fundamental truth that we simply can't effectively teach our children God's Word if we ourselves are not actively engaged in the Scriptures.

We need to be constantly immersed in the teachings, the stories, and the wisdom that the Bible holds. Only then can we pass on that knowledge and those values to our children in a meaningful and impactful way.

This book serves as a great reminder of the importance of this task and provides practical guidance on how to go about it.

It's a must-read for any parent or teacher who is serious about raising children with a strong foundation in the faith.

So good! This book truly ranks up there with Shepherding a Child's Heart. It is an absolute gem. The author has done an amazing job of breaking everything down into simple and understandable concepts. He doesn't just stop at that, but also provides numerous real-life examples to illustrate each point. This makes it extremely easy for the reader to apply the principles in their own lives. I absolutely loved it! It has been a great source of inspiration and guidance for me. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in personal growth and development. Whether you are a parent, a teacher, or just someone who wants to improve themselves, this book is definitely worth reading.

Really awesome practical techniques and helpful tips.

Priolo doesn't shy away from the truth. He is a person who is very straightforward and honest in presenting his ideas.

However, one thing to note is that he can be a little wordy. Sometimes, he uses a lot of words to explain a single point, which might make the reading process a bit slower.

Moreover, at times he uses some words that are not commonly used in everyday language. This can be a challenge for readers who are not familiar with such words.

Therefore, it is advisable to have a dictionary ready when reading his work. This will help you to better understand the meaning of the words and fully grasp the concepts he is trying to convey.

Overall, despite these small drawbacks, Priolo's practical techniques and helpful tips are truly valuable and can be very beneficial for those who are looking to improve in a particular area.

I was not a big fan of this book.

Although I managed to understand the principal idea, it was far too theological for my taste.

It seemed to delve into religious concepts and doctrines in a way that made it difficult for me to fully engage.

I found myself longing for a more straightforward and practical approach.

Rather than getting lost in the complex theological discussions, I wished the author would just cut it to the nitty gritty.

Present the essential points in a clear and concise manner, without all the unnecessary religious jargon.

Maybe then I could have had a better appreciation for the book and its message.

As it stands, however, I struggled to connect with it on a deeper level.

What an outstanding book this is for parents who are not only eager to teach their children from God's Word but also in accordance with God's Word!

The author ingeniously takes the claims from 2 Timothy 3:16 and skillfully applies them to the crucial aspect of disciplining children. The various chapters within the book comprehensively teach both what is required and how to effectively implement it. This includes Biblical teaching, which imparts essential knowledge and values;

Biblical reproof, which corrects wrongdoings in a loving and Godly manner; Biblical correction, which guides children back onto the right path; and Biblical training in righteousness, which helps them develop a strong moral character.

Moreover, it features extremely helpful appendices that assist parents in finding and using relevant verses for specific sinful patterns. I have read several parenting books, with the most recent one being Shepherding a Child's Heart. However, when it comes to the perfect combination of sound theory and easy-to-grasp implementation, this particular book stands out as the best one I have come across thus far.

It truly is a valuable resource for parents who are dedicated to raising their children in a God-centered and Biblically-based way.

This book stands out as it is more biblically-based than the majority of Christian parenting books. It elaborates on how to connect the Bible with the disciplinary process in practical manners. It offers a framework rather than a detailed guide on handling every possible situation that might occur, which some parenting books attempt to do. Authored by a Christian counselor and instructor, it provides valuable insights.

My wife and I first came across this book months ago and have been diligently working to follow its teachings. We have frequently referred to Appendix A, which presents a highly useful and extensive list of behaviors/conditions along with the relevant Bible verses.

The book emphasizes several important aspects. For instance, in "Teaching the Scriptures", it encourages applying the Bible to life by sharing with children how it relates to specific circumstances in both your life and theirs. This approach makes the Bible easier to understand and leaves a more lasting impression.

In "Convicting with the Scriptures", it highlights that children often don't fully grasp the extent of their sin and the need for change. Parents must use the Bible to show them. However, it's crucial not to randomly dispense Bible verses out of context while angry.

Moreover, in "Correcting with the Scriptures", it details how to explain to children, in specific and concrete terms, what God requires for repentance. It also emphasizes having children confess specifically to each wronged party, ask for forgiveness, and make restitution if necessary.

"Training with the Scriptures" focuses on developing biblical thought patterns and motivations in children. It suggests using specific phrases when children resist and showing them relevant Bible passages.

"The Rod and Reproof" provides guidelines for corporal punishment, including having children identify their sin with biblical terminology, ensuring all facts are known before administering punishment, and proclaiming the gospel as part of the discipline.

Finally, "Learning to Use Life's Instruction Manual" encourages going beyond the symptoms to address the underlying sinful attitude or character flaw, finding relevant biblical commands and principles, and learning from the examples of people in the Bible who faced similar situations. Appendix B offers a set of questions that can help bring conviction in children.

This book serves as a comprehensive and practical resource for Christian parents seeking to raise their children in accordance with biblical teachings.
