I truly made an attempt.

I painstakingly read each and every word on every single page.

I dragged myself through page after page that was filled with disgusting descriptions and highly unlikely situations.

And as I reached the conclusion,

in the end, I was left with a strange and perhaps rather macabre wish.

I found myself hoping that someone really would die tonight.

It was a feeling that crept up on me, almost unconsciously, as I endured the rather disturbing content of those pages.

Maybe it was a reaction to the overwhelming nature of what I had read, or perhaps it was some deeper, hidden emotion that was brought to the surface.

Whatever the reason, the thought lingered in my mind, leaving me with a sense of unease and a strange anticipation.

Oates' portrayal of distorted mind states is, upon initial encounter, truly remarkable.

She has a unique ability to vividly depict the inner turmoil and psychological aberrations of her characters. However, the issue lies in the fact that it seems as if every single character is constantly in a distorted mind state.

This continuous presentation of such states can become somewhat tiresome for the reader.

It creates a sense of monotony, as if there is no respite from the chaos and confusion within the characters' minds.

While Oates' exploration of these themes is无疑 interesting and thought-provoking, a bit more variety in the mental states of the characters might have made the reading experience even more engaging and dynamic.

Perhaps a balance between the distorted and the more stable mind states could have added depth and complexity to the overall narrative.

Nevertheless, Oates' work still holds great value in its examination of the human psyche and the various ways in which it can be distorted.
