I'm not precisely certain how one assigns a rating to a book such as this. It stands as the sole book with which I've had difficulties in this regard.

Oates leads us on a stream-of-consciousness odyssey through the life of a man who lacks a distinct personality of his own. However, Jesse, the protagonist's life commences and concludes with supreme tragedy.

I wholeheartedly recommend that anyone peruse this book, yet particularly those who have endured loss and seemingly cannot locate themselves thereafter.

This work delves deep into the human psyche, exploring the profound emotions and experiences that come with facing tragedy and the search for self-identity. It offers a unique perspective that can resonate with a wide range of readers, especially those who have walked a similar path.

The writing style is engaging and immersive, drawing the reader in and making them feel as if they are a part of Jesse's life. It's a thought-provoking and powerful read that leaves a lasting impression.

Overall, while it may be challenging to rate, this book is undoubtedly one that should not be missed.

My first and favorite Joyce Carol Oates novel holds a special place in my heart.

It was a captivating read that introduced me to the brilliant mind of this renowned author.

The story was filled with complex characters and intricate plotlines that kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end.

Oates' writing style is both beautiful and powerful, painting vivid pictures in my mind and making me feel as if I was right there in the midst of the action.

Through her words, she explores deep themes such as love, loss, and the human condition, leaving a lasting impact on me.

This novel not only entertained me but also made me think and reflect on life in ways I never had before.

It truly is a masterpiece that I will always cherish and recommend to others.

Kathi has a deep love for Joyce Carol Oates, and I'm truly glad that I have finally managed to read one of the works that she cited as among her favorites.

This book is at times quite disturbing. By the end of it, I had a sense of vindication for the characters' sufferings. However, the protagonist's triumph seemed so detached from his trials that I wasn't entirely certain if this feeling was truly warranted.

Nonetheless, I find myself thinking about certain parts of it from time to time. There are the parts related to the obstetrician, the damn, and the obese girl who is a number genius.

These elements really made a lasting impression on me. They linger in my mind, causing me to reflect on the complex themes and the unique storytelling that Joyce Carol Oates employs.

I believe that this book has left an indelible mark on my literary consciousness, and I look forward to exploring more of her works in the future.

I just gave up, lmao.

It's not that I don't have the ability or the determination, but sometimes things just don't go as planned.

Maybe it's because of external factors, or maybe it's because of my own mistakes.

But whatever the reason, I've decided to let go and move on.

I know that giving up is not the best option, but sometimes it's the only option.

I'll try to learn from my mistakes and come back stronger next time.

For now, I just need to take a break and clear my mind.

Lmao, who knows what the future holds?

But one thing's for sure, I won't give up easily again.

This book is a truly remarkable piece of work that manages to be both visceral and cerebral at the same time.

When I first picked it up to read before bed, I was completely engrossed. I found myself reading through 45 pages without even realizing the time had passed. I was right there with Jesse in his childhood home, feeling a sense of sickness with premonition during the school assembly, and then running in fear from his psychotic gun-wielding father.

There were several occasions where I had to put the book down, not because I was tired, but because the stories of his residency or the graphic account of his wife's hysteria-ridden pregnancy test made me physically ill to my stomach.

Even when I did put it aside, I couldn't stop thinking about the characters. There were the megalomaniacs, the psychopaths, and I'm not even sure if there was a single heroic or likable character in the entire book. It made me reflect on how different our generation is in its ideas of self-determination compared to Jesse's, or even his children's.

It did disturb me a little to see that Oates considered Jesse's rescue of his daughter an act of demonic paternalism. However, I also see her point. Maybe his motivations for rescuing Shelly were more self-centered than stemming from an actual love for his family. Throughout the book, we constantly see him attempting to love particular people, but always in a caustic and self-talking way. He never quite seems able to truly love.

Whether there is any love that doesn't ultimately stem from anxious, selfish need is another good question.

Four stars doesn't necessarily mean I liked the book. But I still think it's a very good book. I hope that makes sense.

Since JCO calls this one bizarre and obsessive, it is quite acceptable for this review to label it as bizarre as well.

This particular work seems to possess an otherworldly quality that sets it apart from the ordinary. The elements within it are so strange and captivating that they draw the reader in, almost against their will.

It's as if the author has delved into the recesses of their mind and brought forth something truly unique and extraordinary. The bizarreness of it all adds an air of mystery and excitement, making it a must-read for those who are looking for something out of the ordinary.

Whether it's the unusual plot twists, the eccentric characters, or the overall atmosphere, this work leaves a lasting impression on the reader. It challenges our perception of what is normal and takes us on a journey into a world that is both strange and wonderful.

In conclusion, if you're in the mood for a truly bizarre and obsessive read, then this is definitely the work for you.

I'm not entirely certain what to think of this novel.

At times, it is rather disjointed. There are seemingly 200 pages where very little of significance occurs. However, the overall experience feels both brilliant and strange.

At certain moments, it reminds me of one of my all-time favorite novels, "Of Human Bondage" by W. Somerset Maugham. And this is by no means a negative comparison.

The disjointedness might initially seem off-putting, but it also adds to the unique charm of the book.

The long stretches of what appears to be inaction could be seen as a deliberate choice by the author to build tension or set the mood.

Perhaps it is in these quieter moments that the true essence of the story is revealed.

The resemblance to "Of Human Bondage" is interesting. Both novels seem to explore the human condition in a profound and thought-provoking way.

While this novel may have its flaws, it also has a certain allure that keeps the reader engaged and curious to see where the story will lead.

Overall, it is a novel that defies easy categorization and leaves a lasting impression.

What a remarkable and profound talent Oates possessed even at an early age. Many of her first novels were crafted at the zenith of her creative prowess. The Wonderland Quartet serves as a prime example. It commences with The Garden of Earthly Delights and culminates with Wonderland. In the latter, the section描绘 Jesse's experience as a medical resident is truly superb. Oates delves deep into the psyche of a character with acute precision, and her research is astonishing in its minute detail.

Strange fixations on weight pervade her works, particularly a strong aversion to obesity (one can't help but wonder if Oates herself grappled with an eating disorder). The main character of Wonderland, Jesse, never truly overcomes the childhood trauma of witnessing his father massacre his family. Jesse progresses through life mechanically, ultimately becoming a renowned neurosurgeon.

When he encounters the enigmatic Veda and falls in love, he finds himself unable to leave his wife and daughters. Instead, he resorts to attacking himself with a razor rather than succumbing to his emotions. He takes solace in the familiar routines of his life, which are ultimately upended by his beloved daughter Shelley, who disappears into the chaos of the counterculture of the 60s. Oates' writing is intense, passionate, and fast-paced. The thoughts of her characters clamor and fragment, pulling the reader along in a hypnotic trance.

Her works are a testament to her extraordinary literary abilities and continue to captivate readers to this day.

It took me an incredibly long time to read this book.

To be honest, it was okay because the story was so captivating that I was eager to continue reading, at least for the most part.

However, towards the end, the characters and the point of view became extremely strange. It was difficult to read, hard to understand what was happening, and even harder to really care.

Nevertheless, the prose is truly excellent and the story, if nothing else, is really peculiar and interesting.

Therefore, I would recommend it. But be prepared, as it may take you a while to finish it.
