Octavio Paz published this book three years after receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature, but in fact, it took him many years to write it.

I thought I was going to read about erotica, mischief, clandestine loves, kama sutra positions, and other morbidities. But there was none of that. It is a very elegant reading about the transformation of love over the years, of courtly love, of traditions, primitive love, modern love, and platonic love, with the erotic-sexual factor being the guiding thread.

The entire book, which is an extensive essay, is well-supported and based on recognized and extremely important writers ranging from Plato to Einstein, passing through Ovid, Brenton, Dante, Sade, and Shakespeare.

"The Double Flame" takes us on a journey of concepts, stories, mythology, theories, and memories of love and erotica.

Definitely, it is a book that I want to read in another stage of my life when I am hopelessly in love.

This profound statement emphasizes that love is not merely a longing for physical beauty but a deeper desire for fulfillment.

Love goes beyond the surface appearance and delves into the essence of a person. It is about finding someone who completes us, who makes our lives more meaningful and purposeful.

When we truly love someone, we are not just attracted to their looks but also to their character, their values, and their dreams. We want to share our joys and sorrows with them, to grow together, and to support each other in achieving our goals.

Love is a powerful force that can bring out the best in us and make us strive for a better life. It is a source of inspiration and motivation, driving us to become the best version of ourselves.

So, let us not be misled by the superficial aspects of love and instead focus on the true essence of this beautiful emotion - the longing for fulfillment.

The Double Flame is a book that, roughly speaking, talks about love, sex, and eroticism. The author makes constant use of historical and literary references. I have loved that the Mexican author has used writers from all over the globe and different eras. In this way, I have managed to get to know cultures and ideas that are a bit different from what Western art has accustomed me to.

However, the BIG but of The Double Flame is that it gets a bit lost in chaos. And this chaos is all the fault/intention of Octavio Paz. Because he wants to be constantly making allusions to someone, the line that initially existed gradually fades away until it ceases to be a line and becomes, thus, abstract geometry.

This does not take away the charm, elegance, and power of the essay, of course. It just makes it a little less than what it could have been with a little less scientificity and more of Octavio Paz. Which is no small thing.

Overall, The Double Flame is a thought-provoking and engaging read that offers a unique perspective on the themes of love and sexuality. While it may have some flaws, it is still a valuable contribution to the literary canon.

This kind of literature is not what I am accustomed to reading.

However, with Octavio Paz, I managed to travel in time thanks to that wonderful theme: Love.

I really liked the references, and in addition, it is a book that includes philosophy, politics, economy, history, in general, topics related to society, which made me reflect a lot and learn much more.

The works of Octavio Paz offer a unique perspective on various aspects of life. His exploration of love is not just a simple romantic concept but is intertwined with deeper philosophical and social ideas.

By reading his works, one can gain a better understanding of the complex relationships that exist within society and how love can play a role in shaping these relationships.

Moreover, the inclusion of different disciplines such as philosophy, politics, and history enriches the reading experience and allows the reader to view love from multiple angles.

In conclusion, although this type of literature may be different from what I usually read, it has opened my eyes to new ideas and perspectives, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have explored the works of Octavio Paz.

I had never had the opportunity to discover how complex it can be to read Octavio Paz. I was surprised by the enormous bibliography he manages. However, many of his arguments become too repetitive throughout the book.

There were very interesting quotes throughout the book but in the end I'm not very convinced of wanting to recommend it.

Octavio Paz's works are known for their depth and complexity. When I delved into reading his works, I was initially overwhelmed by the vast amount of knowledge and references he incorporates. The bibliography alone is a testament to his extensive research and reading.

Yet, as I progressed through the book, I couldn't help but notice the repetitive nature of some of his arguments. It felt as if he was beating around the bush at times, rather than getting straight to the point.

Despite this, there were indeed some fascinating quotes that made me stop and think. These quotes added value to the overall reading experience.

However, considering the repetitiveness, I'm still on the fence about whether I would recommend this book to others. It might be a great read for those who are truly passionate about Octavio Paz and are willing to overlook the repetitions. But for the average reader, it might prove to be a bit of a chore.

In conclusion, reading Octavio Paz is both a rewarding and challenging experience. While his works offer a wealth of knowledge and interesting ideas, the repetitiveness can be a bit of a drawback. It ultimately depends on the reader's personal preferences and level of dedication.

The ambition or perhaps the confidence required to undertake a history of love and its significance to mankind throughout history could only occur to a writer of supreme knowledge and competence.

To write on such a monumentally complex topic and then incorporate a history of erotism and sexuality, examining their intricate relationships with religion, society, politics, and modernity, is an even more impressive feat. Octavio Paz attempts and accomplishes all of this in a relatively compact and accessible discourse, while also throwing in some slightly off-putting tangents on the origins of the universe.

That doesn't mean everything he says is agreeable or particularly contemporary. One section, initially intriguingly complex, on the distinctions between "amor amistoso" and "amistad amoroso" devolves into the misguided statement that women are, by nature and due to social and historical restraints, incapable of true friendship. Such statements may stem from Paz's references, as this is a history of love and erotism in a strictly literary sense, regardless of how much he refers to the courtly society of 12th-century France or the implications of Marxism on our representations of love.

Not one to downplay the relevance or importance of literature to human reality, I couldn't help but feel that the focus on love's representations in the written word somewhat restricts its completeness. Particularly, reflections on our modern interpretations of love seem unsatisfactory without much mention of film and music.

However, that's nitpicking. It would be impossible to create a comprehensive document on the nature of mankind's amorous relations that satisfied and mentioned everything. As Paz frequently repeats, love is part of our self-definition, the mode of behavior that separates us from animals (sex from eroticism). It is our way of understanding and reconciling our existence with the universe, creation, and, most importantly, death.

Paz traces the history of love from the egocentric idolization of human beauty in the time of Plato in Ancient Greece to the advent of Christianity and the changing nature of the battle between love and death. He examines love and eroticism's relationship and breakaway from the constraints (and sometimes liberations) of religion. He analyzes our need to be remembered, to seek immortality in the love of others or in loving another. He views love as a violent act, a battle with self and other, between the loved and the beloved, as an ultimate tragedy.

One of his most interesting comments is that love as portrayed in literature is for the young and the tragic, not the old and the content, quoting from one of the very few examples of ideal love between the aged in literature. Another look at that discrepancy through the lens of modern literature and film would be very interesting.

Encapsulating such an ambitious argument would require a much longer attempt than this. Paz's work is intricate, nuanced with infinite examples and observations. The arguments loop back and repeat themselves, confirming but rarely sounding repetitive, and the writing is academic and intelligent without being inaccessible. It doesn't have to be agreed with, and it's not all conclusive, but we are talking about love here, and it's hard to argue with Paz's enthusiasm for its importance in the makeup of our identity and the way we see ourselves, each other, and the world around us.

I feel that at some point, it really went too far in terms of science when talking about the subject and all that.

I had this essay pending to read since 2013, and I think time didn't help in my appreciation of the reading. There are some observations that I found interesting regarding erotism and love, but it also seemed quite basic to me and I don't know... like it was lacking something.

Anyway, it's a book that I would like to revisit in a couple of years to see what happens.

Maybe with more life experience and a different perspective, I will be able to understand and appreciate it better. I'm curious to see if my thoughts and feelings about it will change.

It could be that the things that seemed basic to me before will now have more depth and meaning. Or perhaps I will discover new aspects of the book that I didn't notice the first time around.

Only time will tell, but I'm looking forward to that future encounter with this book.

A wonderful poetic essay that analogizes poetry with eroticism and sex with communication. The first part is perfect. It delicately explores the relationship between these two seemingly disparate elements, drawing parallels that are both thought-provoking and engaging. The language is rich and evocative, painting vivid pictures in the reader's mind.

However, as the book progresses towards the middle, it becomes a bit dense. The ideas seem to pile up, and it can be a challenge for the reader to keep up. The author may have tried to pack in too much, sacrificing some of the clarity and flow that was present in the first part.

Despite this, the overall concept of the essay is still fascinating. It offers a unique perspective on the power and potential of both poetry and communication. With a bit of refinement and perhaps a more streamlined approach in the middle section, this could be an even more outstanding work.

It is truly remarkable. I have never come across an essay as excellent as this before. It has such a captivating charm that I find myself reluctant to finish it. The quality is simply outstanding! I have an overwhelming love for it.

Every word, every sentence seems to be carefully crafted to draw the reader in and keep them hooked. It's like a magical journey that I don't want to end.

The author's writing style is engaging and the content is thought-provoking. It makes me think deeply about various aspects of life.

I can't wait to share this wonderful book with others and let them experience the same joy and excitement that I have felt while reading it.

It's definitely a must-read for anyone who loves good literature.
