Paz, a Mexican poet, translator, and diplomat, was born in 1914 in the vicinity of Mexico City. His great-grandfather was a renowned journalist who fought against the French. His father was a landowner and, in addition to participating in the Mexican Revolution, became Zapata's representative in the United States and designed agrarian reforms. His mother's family was of Spanish origin and from the Andalusian immigrants. This tall-voiced poet passed away in 1998 at the age of 84. The contents of this volume are taken from the translation and compilation of the complete works of Octavio Paz 1987-1957 by Eliot Weinberger.
