Surprisingly, it functions effectively. Those people truly could have been entertaining such thoughts, and the combinations of photo and "imagined thoughts" prove to be quite impactful.

They compel the reader to engage in thought as well.

For instance, photos of Elizabeth Eckford, one of the Little Rock Nine, being obstructed by soldiers and yelled at by white students, are accompanied by this text: Soldiers with rifles stop me. Who knows? Will they shoot me if I don't obey?

Similarly, a photo of a black young man shoving a white boy has the caption, They told me and my sister to get off the sidewalk. I made them do it instead.

This would无疑 be an excellent catalyst for discussion in middle school social studies classrooms, provoking students to think deeply about this significant era in American history.

At the back of the book, all the photos are presented again with dates and a brief description. Since I love photographs, I would have the students select one picture from the book and write a short story about it. They could write as an observer or as if they were one of the people in the picture. Even better, they could write from two different perspectives.

For sentence fluency, students get to experience Toni Morrison's different writing style. They don't have to imitate her but simply be exposed to it.

This book can also be read aloud to the class if they are not at the 5th grade reading level. I believe 4th graders would be capable of doing the writing activities I've suggested.
