Someone had mentioned that it is now out of print, but fortunately, I was able to procure it digitally on Amazon. I don't know what it is about this book.

But even the first time I read it, I had the distinct feeling that I'd read it before.

It was as though it were a very old story, one that had been passed down through the ages and retold in such a unique way that I can't for the life of me figure out what the original might have been.

The words seemed to flow over me, familiar yet strange, as if they were speaking to a part of my memory that I didn't even know existed.

Maybe it's the themes that are so universal, or the characters that feel like old friends.

Whatever it is, this book has a hold on me that I can't quite explain.

It's as if it's a piece of my past that I've finally rediscovered, and I can't wait to see where it takes me on this new reading journey.

Now, I find myself as an old and dedicated fan of the DARK IS RISING books. I have also adored her more recent work, KING OF SHADOWS, which naturally led to my having high expectations for this particular book. However, I encountered real difficulties with it. It is a book that focuses on "coming to terms with grief," but it is executed in a rather heavy-handed manner.

Moreover, perhaps influenced by my mood at the time, I felt that the fantasy world was overly filled with "get out of jail card" items. This abundance somewhat detracted from the authenticity and believability of the story. Additionally, I simply could not bring myself to believe in the romance presented within the book.

Am I being grumpy? Maybe. But these were the genuine issues and feelings that I had while reading this book. It's a shame that it didn't meet the high standards I had set for it based on the author's previous works.

I wasn't entirely certain what to anticipate when my college roommate urged me to read this particular book. However, I am truly grateful that she did.

Since then, it has emerged as one of my absolute favorite reads. The progression of the relationship between West and Cally is truly beautiful to behold. As they strive to understand each other and the inexplicable world that they find themselves in one morning, it makes for a captivating story.

The symbolism present throughout their journey is truly phenomenal. The characters they encounter, from the kind and caring Peth to the frighteningly powerful Lady Taranis, are all richly developed. Each character adds depth and complexity to the narrative.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone in search of a truly engaging and thought-provoking read. It has the power to transport you to a different world and keep you hooked from start to finish.
