I really like some of Simmons' books, others seem ordinary to me, and some I don't like at all. This one is somewhere in between the latter two categories.

The part that takes place in the present is a passable best-selling fantasy/horror novel, but the parallel plot that occurs in the 19th century and features Mark Twain as the protagonist seemed like a huge bore to me, and it was very difficult for me to read. I'm not going to lie and say that I skipped a few pages...

On average, I didn't think it was that good. Finally, I finished it today during an endless wait for a medical procedure that was almost as tedious as this book.

In conclusion, while Simmons has some great works, this particular one didn't quite hit the mark for me. The present-day part was decent, but the 19th-century plot really dragged it down. I'm not sure if I would recommend this book to others, as it may not be to everyone's taste. However, if you're a die-hard Simmons fan or really interested in Mark Twain, you might still want to give it a try.

This is an above average horror novel that tells the story of a Trump-esque tycoon and his ill-fated Hawaiian resort.

The tycoon, with his overconfidence and disregard for the local culture and spirits, builds a luxurious resort on the Hawaiian island. However, his actions soon have consequences as the island spirits begin to exact their supernatural revenge.

The story is filled with spine-chilling moments and a sense of dread that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. The author does a great job of creating a vivid and atmospheric setting, making the reader feel as if they are right there on the Hawaiian island, experiencing the horror along with the characters.

Despite the rather unoriginal premise, the novel is actually better than it sounds. The author manages to add enough twists and turns to keep the story fresh and engaging, and the characters are well-developed and believable.

If you're a fan of horror novels, then this one is definitely worth checking out.

No alien land in all the world has had any deep, strong charm for me but that one. It is truly unique. No other land could so longingly and so beseechingly haunt me, whether I am sleeping or waking. It has done so through half a lifetime. Other things may leave me, but it abides. Other things change, but it remains the same.

That sums up my love affair with Hawaii. Mahalo, Dan Simmons for putting it into such perfect words. I adored this book and had a completely unforgettable staycation in your pupule universe. The only way I could have possibly enjoyed it more would've been to actually have read it in a guest room somewhere in the Sandwich Isles.

And an extra special shout out to my friend David D. for birthday gifting me with the signed first edition hardcover of this book. Mahalo for taking me to Hawaii when I needed it most. My uhane has sensibly decided not to return. Aloha!

This novel is definitely not among his top-notch works. To be quite frank, it brings to mind Bentley Little rather than the typical output of Simmons.

Just picture 'The Resort' being set in Hawaii, and you won't be too far off the mark! Although it's evident that Dan was in the process of developing his craft in this early novel, it still offers entertaining content and is really humorous at times, particularly the parts related to Trump/Trumbo.

Granting it 3 stars might be a bit on the generous side; it's more like a 2.5.

Overall, while it may not be a masterpiece, it does have its moments of charm and amusement that can keep readers engaged to a certain extent.

This movie is not his best work.

It fails to create a truly suspenseful atmosphere considering the premise of monsters attacking people in Hawaii.

The story seems to lack the necessary tension and excitement that one would expect from such a concept.

The characters are not developed deeply enough, making it difficult for the audience to truly care about their fates.

The special effects, while decent, do not quite manage to bring the monsters to life in a way that would send shivers down the viewers' spines.

Overall, it is a disappointment for those who were looking forward to a thrilling and edge-of-your-seat experience of monsters wreaking havoc in the beautiful setting of Hawaii.

Perhaps with a better script, more developed characters, and more immersive special effects, this movie could have been a lot better.

As it stands, it is just an average attempt that fails to live up to its potential.

Dan Simmons' prose is strikingly vivid, capable of transporting readers to far-off places with remarkable ease.

In this particular work, his words have the power to make one feel as if they are truly in Hilo, Hawaii.

The descriptions are so detailed and immersive that it's as if you can smell the salty ocean breeze, feel the warm sun on your skin, and hear the gentle lapping of the waves against the shore.

Simmons has a unique talent for painting a picture in the reader's mind, allowing them to experience the beauty and charm of Hilo without ever having to leave their own home.

Whether it's the lush tropical landscapes, the vibrant local culture, or the idyllic beach scenes, every aspect of Hilo comes alive through his prose.

It's no wonder that this book has received such high praise from readers and critics alike.

Dan Simmons has once again proven himself to be a master of the written word, and this book is a must-read for anyone who loves to travel or simply enjoys a good story.

So much potential, so much waste.

I had high hopes for this novel, thinking it would be an exciting and trashy read about demons near volcanoes in Hawaii. After all, the author was Dan Simmons, who had written one of my all-time favorite books, Hyperion.

However, it took a whopping 200 pages for the story to really get going, and another 200 for the monsters to finally make an appearance. Simmons seemed to be more interested in teaching about mythology and the fictional resort than in developing the characters or the plot.

The result was a group of characters who just wandered around aimlessly, and when they finally faced the monsters, I no longer cared.

Also, coming from a writer of Simmons' caliber, I expected a more interesting and believable villain than Trumbo. This billionaire was such a douchebag that it was hard to believe he could survive for as long as he did in the story.

In comparison, even Dennis Nedry, the greedy computer programmer in Jurassic Park, met his untimely end in the first few pages.

Overall, this novel was a disappointment, failing to live up to its initial promise.

This is a truly good book.

At times, the pace of the story moves rather slowly, but it has its own charm.

What makes it even more interesting is the appearance of a character who seems to be inspired by Mark Twain.

This character brings a touch of humor and wit to the narrative, making it more engaging.

The book explores various themes and ideas, taking the reader on a journey of discovery.

Despite its slow moments, it manages to hold the reader's attention and keep them interested until the very end.

Overall, it is a book that is worth reading, especially for those who appreciate a well-written story with interesting characters and a unique style.

It may not be a fast-paced thriller, but it offers a different kind of reading experience that can be both enjoyable and thought-provoking.

Whether you are a fan of Mark Twain or simply looking for a good book to read, this one is definitely worth checking out.

It's in Hawaii, a favorite place of mine. Hawaii is truly a paradise on earth. The moment I arrived here, I was immediately captivated by its breathtaking scenery. The crystal-clear blue ocean stretches as far as the eye can see, with gentle waves lapping at the shore. The sandy beaches are soft and warm, inviting me to take a leisurely stroll. The lush green mountains in the background add a touch of majesty to the entire landscape. So far, I'm intrigued by everything this place has to offer. There's so much to explore and discover, from the unique culture and traditions to the delicious local cuisine. I can't wait to see what else Hawaii has in store for me during my stay here.
