So, this was truly great.

I haven't delved into any of Simmons' crime thrillers previously. In a sense, I feel like I jumped into Kurtz' career right in the middle.

This particular story seems to be one that occurs later in a private investigator's career, where the really big and bad characters step in and actually engage in some dirty work themselves.

I can envision that if I had been following the series for some time, this would be even more exciting and engaging.

However, the killer was a weak point from the moment of his introduction. Code names strike me as very much a 90s thing, and for that reason alone, the Dodger didn't appeal to me.

And when you finally come face to face with him and discover what he's been up to, it was creepy - but perhaps too creepy.

Thanks to shows like Criminal Minds, we're all inundated with crazy serial killers. I would have preferred a normal guy with a gun who simply wants to get paid.

I think at times Simmons could write a straightforward thriller and leave out the supernatural or horror element, and the story would actually be stronger. I had that same feeling about The Terror.

Putting those musings aside, I really liked this book a great deal and would definitely go back and read the earlier entries in the series.

Perhaps Simmons was going for a bit of a shock factor with the ending, but in my opinion, it just didn't work.

Nonetheless, I look forward to reading more of his work in the future.

I eagerly hope that Mr Simmons has a new installment in the works. The thought of delving into another thrilling adventure with Joe Kurtz is extremely appealing.

However, I have a sneaking suspicion that he may have already moved on to other projects in different genres. This makes me a bit sad as I would have loved to see more of Joe Kurtz's exploits.

Nonetheless, I respect Mr Simmons' decision to explore new creative territories. I'm sure that whatever he comes up with next will be equally captivating and engaging.

I'll continue to follow his work with great interest and look forward to seeing what he has in store for us in the future.
