The introduction to my edition makes a bold claim that "Gulliver's Travels has captivated our attention for nearly three centuries due to its remarkable ability to morph into whatever we desire it to be: a political treatise, a children's delight, a jovial tome, a madcap adventure, satiric, ironic, parodic, perhaps a novel, perhaps not."

The source material, however, hardly seems like suitable fare for children. While I can envision small boys being charmed by the bathroom humor, I struggle to imagine them persevering through the archaic language, with its never-ending paragraphs, random capitalizations, antiquated spellings, and a plethora of political allusions that require footnotes to decipher.

And after the first half, as Gulliver transitions from being a giant among the Lilliputans to a doll-sized figure among the giant Brobdingnags, these tall tales become both overly erudite and too bitter for young minds. In the third part, which delves into the flying island of Laputa, the political allegory becomes even more pointed.

"Gulliver's Travels" reminds me of a unique blend of "Alice in Wonderland" and science fiction, using strange and unknown lands and peoples to offer fresh perspectives on ourselves. It is often hilariously funny and wildly imaginative in its details, although other parts can be heavy going, with dense, pedantic expositions.

I wouldn't consider Swift to be the most congenial of classic writers. In a letter to Pope, he declared his purpose to be "to vex the world rather than divert it." Swift also strikes me as having a very conservative mindset, though I don't mean that in the simple, contemporary political sense. In fact, in some ways, he was quite forward-thinking for his era. He believed that women should receive the same education as men and had equal intellectual potential, as the introduction and notes suggest, and you can detect hints of this view in "Gulliver's Travels" and more explicitly in his "Letter to a Young Lady." However, Swift was also deeply suspicious of innovation or the possibility of real progress. According to him, change equates to degeneration, not improvement. The derision aimed at the Academy in Part III and its junk science and absurd art is particularly scathing - and still feels relevant today. (Although that pales in comparison to the utterly scathing rant against lawyers in Part IV - and yes, many of its points remain relevant as well.)

Certainly, his tale in the last part about the Yahoos (humanoid beasts) and Houyhnhnms (horse-shaped but noble and rational) is a searing indictment of human nature. Given that this is all told through Gulliver's first-person narrative and the way he degenerates after living among the Houyhnhnms, I'm not entirely sure which way it cuts. Are the Houyhnhnms truly noble creatures against which humans are found lacking? Or are they a commentary on the dehumanizing effects of slavery and imperialism?

I suppose I might be able to discern more clearly by reading more of Swift. And I attempted to do so. The edition I possess includes other works by Swift, the most substantial of which is "The Tale of the Tub." Unfortunately, I found it far less engaging than "Gulliver's Travels." Perhaps if I were a student of the period or a contemporary of Swift, I might have found it more relevant or amusing. But since I couldn't care less whether Roman Catholicism, the Church of England, or "Dissenters" such as Baptists or Quakers represent the "true" faith, I admit that I quickly became extremely bored - and grateful that I wasn't compelled to read this for school. The one other work of Swift, aside from "Gulliver's Travels," that I would highly recommend to a general reader is his scathing satiric essay "A Modest Proposal." I don't want to reveal too much, but it's one of those very few essays, like Virginia Woolf's "A Room of One's Own," that you remember vividly even decades after reading.

The funniest book I've ever read is truly a remarkable piece of work.

Swift has this amazing ability to gradually draw you into this unique world. As you begin to explore it, the events unfold in the most unexpected and freaky ways.

I can honestly say that I have never laughed so wholeheartedly from a book before. The humor is so cleverly crafted and the situations so absurd that it's impossible not to be entertained.

Based on this experience, I have no hesitation in awarding Swift 5 stars. It's a well-deserved recognition for creating such a hilarious and engaging story. Bravo!

And to my great surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Finally, I forced myself through the last few parts of "Travels about the yahoo's and hounynms" (whatever the correct spelling might be). I truly don't understand why this is regarded as a beloved must-read classic. It is extremely boring. There is no real plot to speak of. The issues it attempts to satirize seem like non-issues in today's context. None of the things Swift is trying to convey felt relevant to me. His criticism of certain science topics appears rather ignorant from the perspective of 2022. He seems overly obsessed with bodily functions. It isn't even good enough to be classified as fantasy or children's literature. I simply can't fathom why anyone would expose a child to any of this. I wanted to read it just to check off a personal bucket list item. We don't necessarily have to continue holding these older books up as the greatest of all and as classics that are essential to read any longer. There are countless other fantastic books in the world. Yes, this is just my personal opinion. In conclusion, this book is utterly forgettable.
