Audio book

This is one of those moments when a book that I read during my college days fails to hold my attention and interest when I revisit it later in life. Indeed, I am well aware of the social and political commentary it contains. I even wrote a paper on it back then. However, upon this rereading, I find myself less engaged. The story that once seemed so captivating now appears rather dull. Maybe it's because my perspective has changed over the years, or perhaps the book simply doesn't have the same impact it did before. In any case, I cannot recommend this book to others. It may have been relevant and interesting at one point, but now it feels outdated and lacking in the excitement and charm that I remember.

“... a wife should be always a reasonable and agreeable companion, because she cannot always be young.” This statement holds a certain truth. A wife, in the journey of life, is not only a partner but also a source of support and comfort. As time passes, youth fades, but the qualities of being reasonable and agreeable become even more crucial. A reasonable wife can handle various situations with wisdom and understanding, not overreacting or being overly emotional. She can communicate effectively with her husband, listen to his opinions, and reach compromises when necessary. An agreeable wife, on the other hand, brings a pleasant atmosphere to the family. She is kind-hearted, easy to get along with, and can make those around her feel at ease. In conclusion, while youth is transient, the virtues of being reasonable and agreeable can help a wife maintain a harmonious relationship with her husband and build a happy family.

So darn silly, yet the political and social criticism within it made it truly worth reading. Oh, and of course, Swift's remarkable skill played a crucial role in enabling him to pull it off. His ability to craft such a seemingly absurd narrative while still effectively conveying deep and thought-provoking critiques is truly astonishing. It's as if he is able to use the guise of silliness as a Trojan horse, sneaking in his powerful messages about the flaws and follies of society and politics. One can't help but be impressed by how he manages to engage the reader on multiple levels, making them both laugh and think at the same time. It's this unique combination of entertainment and enlightenment that makes his work a classic and a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the complex dynamics of our world.

Some classics have a greater ability to reflect their age than others. For example, Swift was a master of satire, using his pen to skewer the current events of his time with great brilliance. However, some of the specific targets of his critique have long since passed into history and are now dead and buried.

Despite this, the story itself has endured and holds its own very well. It is filled with a rich tapestry of elements that continue to captivate readers. There are new lands to explore, giants to encounter, shipwrecks to survive, pirates to outwit, mad scientists to fear, and talking horses to amuse.

With such a diverse range of ingredients, there truly is something in Swift's work for everyone. Whether you are a lover of adventure, a seeker of social commentary, or simply someone who enjoys a good story, there is much to discover and enjoy in these classic tales.

I gather that most folks have already read this.

However, if you are one of those few who haven't (as I was a short while ago), I highly recommend reading the chapters satirizing Academia.

Specifically, Gulliver's descriptions of Laputa and Lagado are truly eye-opening.

In these chapters, Swift uses his sharp wit and keen观察力 to poke fun at the absurdities and pretensions of the academic world.

The floating island of Laputa is filled with scientists and philosophers who are so obsessed with their theories and abstractions that they have lost touch with the real world.

Similarly, the city of Lagado is a place where all kinds of strange and impractical experiments are being conducted.

By reading these chapters, we can gain a better understanding of the flaws and follies of the academic establishment, and perhaps even learn a thing or two about how to avoid falling into the same traps ourselves.

So if you haven't already done so, I encourage you to pick up a copy of Gulliver's Travels and give these chapters a read. You won't be disappointed!

**Title: The Tale of the Sad Satire**

Once upon a time, there was a story that seemed easy to read, like a simple children's tale.

It was filled with characters and events that could easily capture the imagination of young minds.

However, as one delved deeper into its pages, a sense of depression began to creep in.

The satire within the story held deeper meanings that were not so pleasant.

It made one think about the flaws and follies of the world we live in.

Despite its initial charm, the story had a darker side that couldn't be ignored.

Perhaps it was a reminder that even in the simplest of tales, there can be hidden messages that make us question and reflect.

And so, the story remained, a bittersweet blend of innocence and melancholy, waiting to be discovered by those who were brave enough to look beyond the surface.

**Pica de cachorro**

Pica de cachorro is a popular and delicious street food in many countries.

It consists of a hot dog sausage placed in a long bun. The sausage is usually grilled or fried until it has a nice golden brown color and a crispy exterior.

Then, it is topped with a variety of condiments and toppings to enhance its flavor.

Common toppings include ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, relish, onions, tomatoes, and cheese. Some people also like to add jalapeños, sauerkraut, or chili sauce for an extra kick.

Pica de cachorro is a convenient and affordable snack that can be enjoyed on the go. It is often sold by street vendors at fairs, festivals, and sporting events.

Whether you're looking for a quick bite to eat or a satisfying treat, pica de cachorro is definitely worth trying.

Fun adventure, but old English is hard man.

Recently, I embarked on a fun adventure. It was full of excitement and new experiences. However, I quickly realized that one aspect was quite challenging. That was dealing with old English.

Old English is a language that is vastly different from the modern English we use today. The vocabulary, grammar, and even the pronunciation can be very difficult to understand. As I delved deeper into this adventure, I found myself constantly struggling to make sense of the old English texts and conversations.

Despite the difficulty, I refused to give up. I was determined to overcome this obstacle and fully immerse myself in the adventure. I started to study old English more intensively, using various resources and seeking help from those who were more knowledgeable.

Slowly but surely, I began to make progress. I was able to understand some of the basic concepts and phrases in old English. Although it was still a long way to go, I felt a sense of accomplishment and pride in my efforts.

This adventure taught me that even though something may seem hard at first, with determination and perseverance, anything is possible. I look forward to continuing this adventure and learning more about old English.

I picked up this collection with the specific intention of reading A Modest Proposal. It is widely regarded as one of those essential reads, and yet it is remarkably concise, spanning only nine pages. Written in 1729, it presents a scathingly satirical economic solution to the issue of poverty among Irish families burdened with too many dependents. In some respects, it can be quite humorous, provided one is not overly literal-minded; otherwise, it might seem rather gruesome.

For instance, consider this example: "I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled, and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee, or a ragout."

I awarded three stars to this selection.

As for the remainder of the book, I have chosen not to squander my time. Since I had the volume at hand, I勉強地 made my way through Part I of Gulliver's Travels and then gave up. I have heard about this work throughout my life... it's a classic, right? Well, let me tell you, don't waste your time. I am fully aware that it is a carefully veiled political satire targeted at specific individuals, but it has now become so outdated that it holds little meaning. Even with the numerous explanatory footnotes in the version I read, it made scant sense to me. Moreover, it is unbelievably boring and, in some places, just plain repulsive.

I awarded one star to Gulliver.

I perused bits and pieces of other selections in the book but will not be reading any more.

Overall assessment = 2 stars.

In 2009, the world witnessed a series of significant events and changes.

Economically, the global financial crisis continued to have a profound impact. Many countries faced challenges such as recession, high unemployment rates, and financial instability.

Politically, there were various developments around the world. Some countries experienced leadership changes, while others were engaged in important negotiations and agreements on issues such as climate change and international security.

Socially, technological advancements continued to reshape people's lives. The rise of social media and the Internet had a significant impact on communication, information sharing, and social interactions.

In conclusion, 2009 was a year of both challenges and opportunities. It was a time when the world had to adapt to the changing circumstances and work towards a more sustainable and prosperous future.

While I initially relished reading most of Gulliver's tales, in the end, I developed a profound contempt for the character. He is shockingly selfish, scornful, and completely unfeeling towards his own people, and even worse, towards his own family!

He abandons his family for countless years, traipsing off to explore other fantastical countries and peoples, and even allowing himself to be subjugated by them. He shows no concern for the toll his desertion takes on his family and children. His family, in their kindness and love, welcomes him back with open arms and happiness, yet he回报 them with derision and disgust simply because they are of a similar appearance to the species he encountered in horse country. How can he make such a comparison? I have absolutely no respect for a person like this.

The author's choice to make him a selfish family man who leaves his family for his own desires for freedom and travel is puzzling. He could have easily created a character without family attachments and responsibilities. This leads me to believe that the author may have fantasized about such a life for himself but perhaps lacked the courage to actually do it. I know nothing about Jonathan Swift, and this is just a presumption based on how he crafted the character of Gulliver. The kind of person he made Gulliver into is truly disgustingly horrible.
