Quentin Blake, as the illustrator, has successfully depicted the stories beautifully. I'm familiar with his illustrations because he was also the illustrator for Roald Dahl's previous book, The Witches. So this is the second Roald Dahl book I've read, yay!

It describes a man, a vicar no less, running his hand up the leg of a woman at a church bazaar and into her underwear. Ugh! How disgustingly inappropriate! And the poem Physical Training is equally disturbing, as it is about an adult gym teacher asking her underaged student to stay behind after class and sexually assaulting him.

Thankfully, there are a few redeeming poems in the collection. The Tortoise and the Hare and The Emperor’s New Clothes are among the better ones, probably because they bear more resemblance to the poems in Revolting Rhymes, with their clever twists on classic fairy tales.

Overall, my recent re-reading of Rhyme Stew was a rather disappointing experience. It failed to live up to the high standards set by Dahl's other works and left me longing for the magic and charm of his more well-known books.

I read this to my son and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. In my opinion, it is better than his kids novels, with the exception of Matilda, The Witches, and Danny Champion of the World. Ik denk alleen dat ik dit specifieke boekje toch liever in het Engels zou lezen. De reden hiervoor is dat sommige woordgrappen in het Nederlands heel goed gevonden zijn, waardoor ik me afvraag wat het origineel was. Daarnaast lijken de versregels vanwege de rijm soms niet helemaal lekker. Misschien komt dit omdat ik gewoon meer gebruik heb gemaakt van het Engels en daarmee beter vertrouwd ben.
