William York Tindall was an American Joycean scholar with a long and distinguished teaching career at Columbia University. Several of Tindall's classic works of criticism, including A Reader's Guide to James Joyce and A Reader's Guide to Finnegans Wake are still in print. He wrote a total of thirteen books on UK and Irish writers including Joyce, Dylan Thomas, W. B. Yeats, and Samuel Beckett. Indeed, Tindall nominated Beckett for the Nobel Prize in Literature; Beckett was the 1969 laureate.

This, to help me get through Joyce's Ulysses, has become an essential tool.

Ulysses is a notoriously difficult and complex novel, filled with experimental language, stream-of-consciousness narration, and a wealth of literary allusions.

It requires a great deal of patience and concentration to read, and often leaves readers feeling confused and overwhelmed.

However, with the help of this, I have been able to make sense of the text and gain a deeper understanding of Joyce's masterpiece.

I have read the chapters on Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

Based solely on those, my rating is very average.

I'm not certain if I'll use it for Ulysses.

In my opinion, there are better guides available out there.

For Joyce enthusiasts and those who have a penchant for reading clever and enlightening essays about equally clever and enlightening books, this work is a must-read.

His overview portions in the essays on Ulysses and Finnegan's Wake are truly exceptional. They offer deep insights into these complex and often challenging works, guiding the reader through the labyrinthine plots and themes.

Dubliners, on the other hand, was a little lackluster. While it did have its moments, it didn't quite reach the same heights as the other two. However, it's worth noting that the "A Little Cloud" essay was quite good and was even quoted for a multimedia James Joyce project.

But perhaps the most enjoyable aspect of this collection is his random tangents on Portrait. These asides add a touch of whimsy and unpredictability to the essays, making them all the more engaging and entertaining. Overall, this is a great read for anyone interested in the works of James Joyce.
