The book commences with biographical segments and reprints from diverse works of yesteryears.

Split into decades such as the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and the early 90s, it provides a fine sampling of Thompson's oeuvres and comes accompanied by original commentary.

There are several original pieces that embody Thompson's gonzo style of rhetoric.

Overall, it is a decent addition to the Hunter S. Thompson collection, featuring a substantial amount of material from the 1980s.

It涵盖了从普利策离婚审判到猪头恶作剧等内容,并对里根/老布什政权发表了见解。

At the conclusion of the book, Thompson finds himself in a first-person role not of his own choosing when felonies are leveled against him by an increasingly right-leaning American justice system.

If you are an HST enthusiast, you must include this in your list.

Moreover, he at times appears somewhat prophetic regarding future times.

The text also delves into the servant problem, stating that it is the Achilles' heel of the rich.

The only solution seems to be robots, but we are still a generation or so away from that.

In the meantime, it is nearly impossible to hire a maid who is intelligent enough to make a bed yet too naïve to wonder why it is full of naked people every morning.

The gardener will be uncomfortable seeing rope ladders hanging from the master-bedroom windows when mowing the lawn at noon, and any chauffeur with the intelligence to operate a stick shift on a Rolls will also understand what is transpiring when you send him across the bridge to a goat farm in Loxahatchee for a pair of mature billies and a pound of animal stimulant.

The text further explores the differences between the rich and others, noting that it is not just about having more money as Hemingway pointed out, but rather that money is not a governing factor in the lives of the truly rich as it is for those who work for a living.

The truly rich are born free, like dolphins, never feeling hungry and having their credit never questioned.

Their daughters will be debutantes and their sons will attend prep schools, and even if cousins are junkies or lesbians, it doesn't matter.

The breeding of humans remains an imperfect art, even with all the advantages.

The text poses awkward questions such as where are the Aryan thoroughbreds that Hitler bred carefully in the early days of the Third Reich and where are the best and brightest children of Bel Air and Palm Beach.

The answers to these questions can be disturbing, as it makes one wonder why the finest flowers of the American Dream so often end up in asylums, divorce courts, and other gray hallways of the doomed.

What is it about being born free and rich beyond worry that drives people crazy?

Strange days indeed prevail in the mind of a great writer like Hunter S. Thompson.

His works are a curious blend, partially a reflection on his previous adventures that took him to the wildest corners of the world. At times, they serve as a documentation of his current mishaps, which seem to be as numerous as the stars in the sky.

Thompson has now retreated into flights of fantasy more freely than ever before. This makes it an impossible task to determine whether what he's writing is the unadulterated truth or just one of the many beginnings to his countless list of unfinished projects.

For anyone with an interest in journalism, friendly physical abuse, politics, wild pig hunting, or the unique lifestyle of the late Dr. Thompson, his writings offer an exhilarating read. It's a journey into a mind that is as complex and fascinating as the stories he weaves.

One can't help but be drawn into his world, where reality and fiction blend seamlessly, and every page holds the promise of a new adventure or a thought-provoking insight.

Whether you're a die-hard fan or a newcomer to his works, there's no denying the allure and power of Hunter S. Thompson's writing.

I'm an extremely passionate Hunter Thompson fan.

His works, ranging from the iconic "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas", to his coverage of the 1972(?) presidential election, and his columns for the SF Examiner, all showcase a unique blend of astute insights.

He combines this with a writing style that is borderline psychopathic, yet in a good way. It results in funny and engaging content that also makes you think deeply.

However, when it comes to this particular book, if you're seeking pure entertainment, it can be inconsistent.

Some parts are gonzo and full of energy, while a significant portion is self-indulgent and retrospective.

It gives the impression of being a random collection of miscellany, composed of largely disconnected pieces spanning over four decades.

From a historical point of view, it is interesting, but I personally found it quite challenging to read as a cohesive whole.

Nonetheless, it still holds value for fans of Hunter Thompson and those interested in his unique brand of journalism and writing.

Hunter S. Thompson was a unique and influential figure.

He had a distinct way of expressing his views, often in a humorous and biting manner. When he talked about how Americans didn't care about politics, it was a thought-provoking observation.

Today, the political landscape has changed significantly. With the rise of social media and the 24-hour news cycle, there is more information available than ever before.

However, it's also possible that Thompson would still see a lack of genuine engagement and understanding among the general public.

Perhaps he would be critical of the way politics has become more polarized and divisive.

Or maybe he would find new sources of humor and satire in the absurdities of modern political campaigns and policies.

It's impossible to know for sure what Thompson would say today, but his words and ideas continue to resonate and inspire discussions about the role of politics in our lives.

Three stars for Thompson fans who are completists.

(All others should subtract a star or two.) If you are not already a HST fan, avoid this one completely. There are a couple of gems in here, but overall it is a weak collection far below The Great Shark Hunt and Generation of Swine.

It seems that this work is more of a niche offering for those die-hard Thompson enthusiasts who simply must have every piece of his writing.

The content, while containing some闪光点, fails to reach the high standards set by his more renowned works.

If you do want to read this one, DO NOT read the audiobook. Thompson himself is the reader, and he sounds like he was under the influence of several substances while reading.

His mumbling, near incomprehensible performance of the material so frustrated me that I had to return to the print copy of the book to finish.

The audio version really detracts from the experience, as his delivery makes it difficult to follow and enjoy the text.

It's a shame, as the written words might have had more impact if presented in a more coherent manner.

Overall, this is a work that will likely only appeal to a specific subset of Thompson fans, and even they may find it somewhat disappointing.

Great!

This book comes in choppy pieces of insanity. It is truly a unique and captivating read. The fragmented nature of the narrative adds an element of mystery and excitement, keeping the reader on the edge of their seat. Each piece seems to be a puzzle, waiting to be solved and fit together to form a complete picture.

The insanity within the pages is both thrilling and thought-provoking. It challenges the reader's perception of reality and forces them to question their own beliefs and assumptions. The author's use of vivid language and imaginative storytelling brings the insanity to life, making it almost palpable.

Overall, this book is a must-read for those who enjoy something different and are not afraid to explore the depths of the human mind. It is a journey into the unknown, a place where the boundaries of sanity are blurred and the unexpected awaits at every turn.

One of the greatest tragedies of the 21st century is that Hunter Thompson is no longer here.

He had the unique ability to skewer the trite, insincere, and outright corrupt nature that exists on every side of the American political divide.

Not only that, but he also had the courage to expose the broken and disgusting culture that gave birth to our lazy, self-aggrandizing political class.

These narcissistic citizens keep empowering these blowhards, leading to a never-ending cycle of disappointment and disillusionment.

Thompson was in his prime in Songs of the Doomed, where his sharp wit and fearless criticism shone through.

With his death, the world lost its purest and most rhetoric-shattering critic.

His absence is deeply felt, and we can only hope that someone will rise to take his place and continue his important work of holding the powerful accountable and shining a light on the truth.

One of the best Hunter S. Thompson books to date is truly a remarkable piece of work.

This book is not only filled with debauchery but is also driven by a sense of plain speed that is simply electrifying.

As you read through its pages, you can't help but be swept up in the same wild and frenzied emotions that the author himself seems to have experienced.

The writing style is engaging and captivating, pulling you in from the very first sentence and keeping you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

It's a book that makes you feel alive, makes you question the norms, and makes you want to embrace the chaos and uncertainty of life.

Overall, it's an awesome read that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a unique and unforgettable literary experience.

Whether you're a fan of Hunter S. Thompson or simply someone who enjoys a good adventure, this book is sure to leave a lasting impression on you.

So, what are you waiting for? Pick up a copy today and get ready to embark on a wild ride like no other!

More mediocre and manic days mark the post-success life of a freewheeling icon. The collection presented here is, in fact, stronger than that of "Generation of Swine." However, it still faces difficulties in compiling anything that is of clear or truly amazing interest. Even the publicity stunts that Hunter S. Thompson managed to create for himself during the 80s and 90s hold little appeal. A significant aspect that bookends this rather barebones collection is the court case that persisted throughout the 1990s. While it is understandable that we cannot expect a detailed commentary on such an event from the man himself, we should at least be given more than just snippets of other news stories and a couple of letters.

The tone of this piece closely resembles that of an autobiography. There are haphazard flashbacks to the bygone days, during which Thompson attempts to piece together what he can recall of his defining moments and work. These flashbacks are initially interesting, but they gradually lose their momentum towards the end. Sadly, it seems that the man himself also experienced a similar decline.

Hey, this is Doctor Thompson.

The beginning is rather uneven, filled with some quite incomprehensible meandering thoughts from his unpublished Jellyfish and Rum Diaries.

However, when it comes to politics and news, he is just about the best.

His thoughts as a reporter in Saigon at the end of the war, his musings with a parolee in a library at night, his coverage of the Rozanne Pulitzer divorce trial, his observations of the wealthy in Palm Beach, Florida, and his musings on the 1972 presidential race are all brilliant and showcase Thompson at the peak of his game.

It is truly worth persevering through the early fiction to discover the gems that come later.

And dedicating the book to the wonderful Rosalie Sorrels who passed away less than a year ago, well, that would bring a tear to the eye of anyone who ever heard her.

This book is a captivating exploration of Thompson's mind and his unique perspective on the world.

It offers a fascinating look into his experiences and insights, making it a must-read for fans of his work and those interested in politics, journalism, and human nature.
