However, this book is extremely disappointing. Despite Slater enlisting a co-author to assist in its writing, both the style and content are lacking. The writing style is reminiscent of a ten-year-old's essay: the sentences are as concise as possible and constructed in a uniform manner, rendering the entire narrative a dull read. While it may have been intended to sound "authentic," it simply comes across as simplistic. As for the content, unfortunately, the book reveals that there appears to be little in Slater's mind aside from surfing. He includes aspects of his personal life, which are rather unremarkable. There is truly not much to convey, and minor incidents are exaggerated out of proportion. I sincerely hope that Slater has evolved since the book was published almost ten years ago (I believe he has).

On a positive note, the book contains numerous photos, both in black and white and in color.

The descriptions of surfing and competitions, along with a hint of the politics underlying competitions, were captivating. There was an abundance of information about competing that, coming from outside the surfing lifestyle, I could hardly fully comprehend. As always, I was a little thrilled to hear my home (Kirra) mentioned so favorably as a world-class surf spot.

It's an interesting book, with excellent narration. However, the one aspect that I really didn't love was the timelines. It seemed as though the narrative didn't strictly adhere to a chronological order but instead jumped back and forth in a manner that could sometimes be rather confusing.

For instance, Kelly apparently had an acting stint on Baywatch (famously known to Aussies far and wide as boobwatch), which I wasn't aware of as I never watched the show. He also dated Pamela Anderson, another fact I was ignorant of as celebrity culture bores me and I don't follow it. When discussing Baywatch, at times he seems to be simultaneously discussing events that occurred long before the show, which is a bit disorienting. When it comes to Pam, he discusses her a bit out of sequence, and I sort of understand that. Apparently, a lot of people fixated on his dating rather than his career, so it's almost like a separate topic. Still, if you can simply go with the flow without fretting about timelines and just enjoy the narrative, then this book can be quite enjoyable. However, if you were attempting to memorize the sequence of his life events, it might not work as well.

This is an interesting story, but it's just not the best written book ever.

However, it is definitely a must-read for fans of Kelly Slater.
