Alright, definitely one of the best books I've read in this series, I mean, really. Especially the whole deal with Al freaking out because Barry told him that his memories might be faked. Great, interesting rift in the brothers' relationship.

But the main comment I want to make is...

WHY THE HELL DID YOU HAVE TO KILL HUGHES?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I really like it so far, and I could've rate it 5/5, but I'm anxious and I'd prefer to leave the 5 star rating for the toms that will blow me out of my socks.

Some excellent brotherly bonding moments following the intense battle that allows us to better understand their complex relationship in their current forms. A staggering death also occurs to an important character who happens to have discovered a mind-boggling secret that could affect the ongoing events.

This is at once both my favorite volume and one I can't stand. A testimony to the writing and characterization, I suppose, but that doesn't mean I don't quietly resent it.

That Hughes's death can hurt so much to read/watch after such a short period of time is truly amazing, but much as I respect the skill that went into it, I still wish it hadn't happened. In fact, eventually I'm going to plot out and perhaps write a Doctor Who/FMA crossover to change that and see what happens.


Spoilers for the nature of the evil plot: Re-reading is really nice, because now I know what Hughes figured out and how he did it. That man is a bona fide genius, to be able to put so many things together and see the transmutation circle on such a huge scale, especially after he'd only seen a rough diagram of it and just for a short period of time. And he probably at least guessed that Bradley was in on it, too, since his first reflex was to call the President and then he reconsidered.


The bonus story at the end does make the volume a bit more bearable, since of course it's the Black Hayate one - always good for a smile and very necessary, what with everything else.

Ah, and here's the volume where the typical Japanese manga weirdness starts to show. There's a creepy guy who's obsessed with mini-skirts and who wants to hire only women in his military to make it his personal harem (and that's almost a direct quote). There's another creepy guy who can't shut up about his daughter and his family, and who basically kidnaps one of the female characters and makes her live at his home. And finally, there's the side-story about another character who adopts a puppy and then shoots the gun in the puppy's direction to potty-train him! And that's supposed to be funny! WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK WAS THAT. And these are not the villains, mind you! These are the supporting cast of the book who you are supposed to like and care about!

The worst part is, there wasn't really a lot of story in this volume otherwise. It keeps stalling for two volumes already, and if something doesn't start to happen soon, I'm afraid I might lose interest in this series completely.

Oh my god. This one won me over. There is this one heartbreaking scene in this manga - I'm sure other readers will know what I'm talking about - that is just so good. Absolutely fantastic panelling. I'm glad we get to see some more brother dynamics in this volume.

THIS VOLUME WILL BREAK YOUR HEART. Especially if you've seen the show. I thought this point was actually further into the story, but I was mistaken.

ACLARACIÓN:
Todos estos puntos están de alguna forma influenciados por conocimientos y opiniones que ya tenía sobre la historia gracias a la adaptación del anime, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

ASPECTOS POSITIVOS
- Ya lo dije con el tomo anterior pero aquí lo vuelvo a repetir nuevamente: me encanta que Arakawa les de un desarrollo y crecimiento diferente a cada hermano. Si bien es obvio que Edward es el protagonista, la autora no ignora olímpicamente a Al y, al contrario, le da un espacio para crecer por separado. Al no perdió sólo un brazo ni una pierna. Al perdió un cuerpo entero. Detrás de su personalidad cálida y amable hay un niño que perdió su humanidad y está encerrado en un cuerpo que lo aleja más y más de ella. Era obvio que en algún momento se iba a plantear todas las dudas que se plantea en este tomo. Y esa es la belleza del desarrollo de personaje: ver a dicho personaje pasar por altos y bajos para arribar a una conclusión que le permita crecer.
Esto también afecta la relación con Ed. Descubrimos muchísimo más sobre el peso que llevan y sobre cómo ese peso influye en el amor que se tienen el uno por el otro. La escena en la que Al le pregunta a Ed sobre sus recuerdos y como luego Winry le cuenta sobre la culpa con la que carga Ed me rompió el corazón. La relación entre Ed y Al es hermosa e incluso en los momentos de más tensión demuestra lo fuerte que es.
- Winry tiene mucho más desarrollo. Si bien peca de ser un poco el cliché de tu estereotipo de personaje femenino en shounen, Arakawa por lo menos hace el intento de mostrar su importancia, más allá de ser la mecánica (aunque también es cierto que esa importancia siempre está ligada a Ed y Al y creo que Winry nunca creció por separado de los hermanos but whatever no se puede pedir todo en esta vida). Winry y su abuela son la única familia que les queda a Ed y Al, la que estuvo ahí ese 3 de octubre cuando ocurrió todo, la que conoce su dolor. Por eso tiene que ser ella la que los apoye aunque no entienda en lo que los hermanos están metidos.
- Los malos malísimos por fin están empezando a actuar y Arakawa ya perfila una trama mucho más intricada y complicada que lo que prometía al principio. Seamos honestos, Hughes tenía muuuuuuchas death flags en este tomo. Pero Arakawa logra que impacte de todas formas. Hay un suspenso y toda una trama compleja que, aunque por el momento se nos escapa, siembra las raíces necesarias para generar intriga y hacernos ver que hay algo feo que todavía no se revela.
Y esa escena con Mustang en el funeral... nunca deja de llegarte al corazón. Y más si tenes en cuenta el tipo de personaje que venía siendo Roy hasta este momento.
- La comedia siempre fue un punto positivo para mí, y en un tomo donde el ritmo es mucho más lento este aspecto brilló más que nunca.

ASPECTOS NEGATIVOS
- FMA tiene eso que, entre tomos, tiene un ritmo bastante inestable. Podes empezar con capítulos llenos de acción y revelación de secretos, para luego pasar páginas enteras dedicadas sólo a ver cómo los personajes se recuperan. Y, aunque aprecio esos momentos especialmente porque traen consigo mucho desarrollo de personaje, si resulta más tedioso de leer cuando lo que más deseas es obtener respuestas a incógnitas previamente presentadas. Pero bueno, todo a su debido tiempo.

CONCLUSIÓN
El volumen 4 de Fullmetal Alchemist es una montaña rusa de emociones y sigue en la línea de desarrollar aún más a los personajes y complejizar más el mundo en el que estos se mueven.
