That lone star is by my time-travelling 15-year-old self, who would have loved the book.

My significantly older self, however, has a completely different perspective. I can no longer see what's so funny and/or entertaining about excessive drug use, destruction of property, a multitude of crimes and the like. It seems rather irresponsible and even dangerous.

While there are a few amusing scenes and the odd well-crafted sentence, they are not nearly enough to make me read further than page 50. The overall theme and content of the book just don't resonate with me anymore. It's interesting to think about how our tastes and values change as we grow older and gain more life experience.

Perhaps my 15-year-old self was more easily entertained by the wild and crazy antics in the book, but my older self craves something more meaningful and thought-provoking.

"Different editions of us live in many different worlds... and all of them are real."

TW: homophobia, drugs abuse, alcohol abuse, racism

Actual rating: 3.5 ⭐️

Look, let me be completely honest here. This book was truly entertaining and had its fair share of funny moments, which is precisely why it received the rating it did. I devoured it in an incredibly short amount of time, and I have to admit that there were several scenes that made me chuckle out loud. However, it's important to note that the book did have its problematic content and sentences. Just take a look at the TW and you can get a sense of what I mean. At times, it could be a bit too much, but overall, it wasn't terrible. The narrating voice, on the other hand, was at times unbearable. The main character was disgustingly vain and full of himself. He thought he was the absolute best thing since sliced bread, and I couldn't disagree more. But here's the thing, his cockiness was so ridiculous that it was almost endearing in a strange way. I found myself giggling out loud on multiple occasions. I mean, I wanted to punch him in the face for sure, but I also had a good time reading about his antics. He stereotyped pretty much everyone he met and always felt that he was in the right, when in reality, he rarely was. But despite all of this, the humor in the book was there and it was genuinely funny. I mean, who would have thought of mixing bandidos, guns, drugs, alcohol, and physics? Certainly not me. And the most shocking thing is that this strange concoction actually worked! Overall, I wouldn't say that I would recommend this book to everyone. Some of the sentences and the way people were depicted were just bad and slightly problematic. But if you're interested in the story and don't mind a bit of controversy, then go ahead and pick it up. It'll fly by in a very enjoyable way and it's entertaining as hell.

"By the way: As you will likely soon find out, convoluted, ridiculous chains of cause and effect are what the fucking book is about."

This book is, without a doubt, yet another instance of something rather unique.

It gives the impression of being a choose-your-own-adventure, but with a twist. Here, the person making the choices is not you, and they are hilariously intoxicated, as if they've downed a molotov cocktail's worth of drugs and tequila. Interestingly, within the pages of this book, you also get to learn some theories of quantum physics.

I decided to read this book so that I could share this cultural marker with my sisters. Perhaps this contributed to my initial perception of the book dragging on for the first three quarters. However, when the narration of the past finally caught up to the present (or perhaps the narration of the present slowed down, it's hard to tell), things took a turn and became very exciting, very quickly.

Life is but a dream? This thought lingers as you make your way through the pages of this captivating and somewhat strange book.

Better movie than book?

This is a strange and odd tale that manages to elicit a few chuckles. It has a certain charm that could potentially translate well onto the big screen. One can't help but think that it would make for a much better Hollywood script than a literary read. The story seems to have elements that are tailor-made for the visual medium. The vivid and somewhat outlandish characters, along with the unusual plot twists, would likely come to life in a more engaging way in a movie. However, it remains to be seen if it will ever get the chance to be made into a film. If it does, it could be a real treat for moviegoers looking for something different and entertaining.

In different worlds, our different pressures... and all of them are real.

Since we cannot cross a very well-protected boundary, we need to find a gravitational field as powerful as a black hole and disrupt the fabric of space-time so that the boundary is not protected or quantum bandits who want to travel in space-time to better boundaries.

"There is nothing in the world but empty, curved space. Matter, charge, electromagnetism and other fields are only indicators of the curvature of space. Physics is geometry." That is to say: Bananas and bandits are only fluctuations of nothingness.

A dog, a snake and artificial isolation in the forest with infinite drugs: Cosmology and quantum mechanics working is quite reasonable.

Sending the bandits to steal the physics book from the library and since you like the library anyway, bringing back the library director as a gift, it is so reasonable that it cannot be questioned.

Life consists of a dream. Man has no idea at all about who he is or what he has done.

"It gave us an apparently orderly universe. But under the order that the eye paints, there is chaos. There is absurdity." Everything ends up being absurdism in one way or another.

Subatomic particles, the basic matter of everything, do not behave like solid particles. Instead, they behave like abstract entities. Statistical entities that show a tendency to exist.

"A lot of things happened.."

This is an archetypal new age SWUSA satirical romp. It takes you on a wild ride, but spoiler alert - it leads nowhere... well, to Sausalito, anyway.

It doesn't really matter where it leads because the journey itself is the main attraction. It's a hoot, full of laughter and absurdity.

You'll find yourself entertained from start to finish, even though you know it's all just for fun. The story is filled with crazy characters and situations that will make you shake your head in disbelief.

But that's the beauty of it. It's a lighthearted escape from reality, a chance to let loose and have a good time. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.

If you are a fan of Fear and Loathing, you might potentially have an inclination towards this book. However, in my personal opinion, I truly felt that this book had no real essence or purpose. The so-called "cosmic" aspect of it seemed to be nothing more than some incoherent, pseudo-philosophical drivel.

To make matters worse, the absence of an engaging story, combined with the presence of misogyny and casual racism, made this narrative almost impossible to read. It was a real struggle to get through.

Surprisingly, my favorite part of the entire book was actually the author's prelude note. I really can't fathom why there is a cult following for this book. I suspect that it mainly consists of white men who perhaps lack fulfilling hobbies and thus latch onto something like this.

It's quite baffling to me how such a book could gain any sort of popularity considering its numerous flaws.

I think I have to be in the right kind of Hunter S. Thompson mood for this kind of book.

However, this week just wasn't it. Maybe it's because of the stress and busyness that has filled my days.

I usually find that when I'm in the right frame of mind, I can fully immerse myself in the wild and crazy world that Thompson creates in his writing.

But this week, my mind has been elsewhere, focused on other things.

Perhaps I'll come back to this book at a later time, when I'm more able to appreciate its unique charm.

For now, I'll just have to wait and see if the right mood strikes me again.

I truly have no idea how to review this.

Recently, I read Weisbecker's non-fiction account of a trip through Mexico, and it piqued my interest in his novel. When something is compared to Hunter S. Thompson, one must pay attention.

There was a great deal of humorous content in this book, which was clearly autobiographical. However, it veered off into the realm of science fiction fantasy. It almost reminded me of a combination of a Tom Robbins novel and National Lampoon, with the action being deliberately absurd. The premise is based on the concept in quantum physics that there are multiple iterations of oneself existing simultaneously, and the transfer of anti-matter through time ["Hey! Are we gonna be tested on this?"]. There are also crazy pilots who fly at tree level with only a dog as a copilot to spot DEA agents in the sky.

While I understand the comparisons to Hunter S. Thompson, Thompson's writing is much more firmly rooted in reality, even if it is told from an altered perception. As a result, I much preferred Weisbecker's non-fiction. And for a man who was so knowledgeable and obsessed with surfing (he always chose his dog and surfing over his various girlfriends who wanted him to settle down), there was none of that in this book.

In 1998, the author mentions that someone asked for a copy of this book, and he was reluctant to provide it, believing it to be a bit juvenile and not representative of where he was at that time. It's a worthwhile read, but it doesn't age particularly well as it does sound rather sexist in 2023.
