This was truly a great read, even though at times it could be a bit dry. Just like the majority of my books, I listened to it on Audible. The narrator did a good job, but I discovered that this was a book that I could listen to while engaged in other, more urgent, tasks. In other words, it doesn't penalize you for zoning out as it mostly reads like a history book - a quality that I can appreciate in my readings. Since this book was written using the archives of a KGB archivist, it reads like an anthology of short stories about the various things the KGB did from the October revolution to 1991.

Overall, I really enjoyed the read. However, I did wish that it had been a little less dry. I found myself getting slightly bored at certain points, but then something interesting would come up and draw me back in. Despite the dryness, the content was fascinating and provided a unique perspective on a particular era. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in history or the inner workings of the KGB.

I have been reading this since July.

Though it was really cool! However, it was very very VERY dry and boring at times. #nonfic

I read several books on the OSS (the American spies/saboteurs during WWII) and Churchill's Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (on English spies/commandos [COMMANOS!!!!]). Not to mention several spy movies, but they're all from the US or UK's POV. So it was awesome to read this and fill in gaps in the story and see what the KGB was up to.

Also, the bit about JFK's killer made me laugh so hard.

SPOILERS:

Sort of?

Basically, Oswald (the guy who shot JFK) tried to defect to Russia years before he shot JFK. And this is kind of how it went:

Oswald: I want to defect! COMMUNISM!

KGB: What's with this guy? *squints suspiciously* Is he CIA? He has to be. Nobody is actually THAT crazy.

Oswald: *being Oswald*

KGB: Nope. He's that crazy.

And then Oswald decided "he'd be better serving quietly in Texas".

KGB: Oh yeah, yeah totally. (Thank goodness he finally left!)

And then he shot a president and they were like OH NO. NOW THEY'RE GONNA BLAME US. STUPID CRAZY MAN. Hey! Let's make this elaborate scheme to blame literally everyone but us! YEAH!

This account provides an interesting and humorous take on the events surrounding Oswald's attempted defection and the subsequent assassination of JFK. It shows how the KGB initially viewed Oswald with suspicion and how his actions later had far-reaching consequences. Overall, it's a fascinating read that offers a unique perspective on a historical event.

Vasili Mitrokhin took an enormous amount of work home with him. It wasn't just his own work either. He took detailed notes, sometimes writing down things verbatim. And then, when he defected, he smuggled those notes out with him.

This book presents a wide range of stories, varying from bone-chilling and terrifying to completely ridiculous and laughable. While it may not contain all of the KGB's secrets, it does have a significant number of them. The KGB could be brutally efficient at times, but there were also occasions when their efforts were wildly disproportionate to any rational assessment of the threat level something posed. Paranoia and conspiracy theories had a major impact on them, and the KGB was highly prone to both.

The only caveat I would offer is that it's advisable not to delve into this book without having some background knowledge of the Cold War (which I had gained from various other readings) and some understanding of the KGB's history (which I unfortunately lacked). This is a book that delves deep into the details, rather than providing a comprehensive history. If you're like me, you would appreciate having a bit of a framework to which you can attach all the events, names, and places.

The writing in this book is of a high quality. The tone of Andrew's writing effectively captures both the seriousness and the absurdity of the events. If you've had a taste of the Cold War and/or Russian/Soviet history and are渴望 something more engaging (in multiple aspects), then this book is definitely worth picking up.

First of all, I have the utmost respect for the dedication Vasili Mitrokhin showed. As a KGB archivist, he painstakingly copied thousands of documents and secretly stored them under his home.

This trove has undeniably been of incalculable value to historians and western intelligence agencies. Given my love for the espionage genre, both historical and fictional, I anticipated binge-reading this book, reveling in the previously unavailable detail and accuracy of real-life spy drama.

However, I don't actually "binge-read" anything. Considering my methodical reading style and how quickly I fall asleep when I go to bed, getting through this book was a laborious task. It wasn't just the daunting 600-page length; it was the awkward pacing that constantly tripped me up.

Due to the organization (not chronological but by adversary country or espionage method), I was constantly bouncing from decade to decade, making it difficult to apply a timeline to what I was reading.

I suspect you might find this criticism shallow, but I was particularly put off by the rendering (in brackets) of the multiple code names for every character. While it was likely done to enhance credibility and position the book as a reference source, it quickly became aggravating and made the sentences clumsy to read and digest.

By the time I was halfway through, I was really tired of it and wished for a digest version, half the length and more chronologically arranged. Still, I persevered, more for the sake of picking up fascinating little espionage stories (which I often did) than out of stubbornness to finish what I started.

I truly believe that the way this book is edited and arranged, combined with its length, would cause perhaps a fourth of well-intentioned readers to give up before completing it. Now I despair of what to do with the sequel, "The World Was Going Our Way," which mocks me from my to-be-read shelf. I suspect I'll do little more than flip through a chapter or two unless the structure and style are very different.

What an astonishing book this is.

In every respect. How easy it was for the KGB to spy in England, France and the USA. There was truly no security at all.

It is also astonishing how Lenin and Stalin were so obsessed with so-called conspiracies against Russia that they dismissed a lot of information as lies. What would the world have looked like if that had not been the case.

It would be nice if there was also such a secret archive of the FBI and CIA.

This book provides a fascinating insight into the world of espionage and the paranoia that existed during certain periods. It makes one wonder about the true extent of the activities that took place behind the scenes.

Overall, it is a thought-provoking read that challenges our assumptions about history and the role of intelligence agencies.

One can only imagine what other secrets are still hidden away, waiting to be discovered.

Perhaps one day, we will have a more complete understanding of the events that shaped our world.

Vasill Mitrohhin is truly a hero among historians.

He possessed the amazing courage that enabled him to prevent an astonishing amount of data regarding the relentless spying activities of the Soviets from being hidden and deleted.

The outcome is this extremely detailed book. It vividly showcases how the Soviets spied on a scale that was initially hard to imagine, starting from the very beginning until the collapse of communism. It also reveals how so many Westerners collaborated with them.

Once again, the reality has proven to be more fascinating and incredible than fiction. This book not only provides valuable insights into the past but also serves as a reminder of the importance of truth and the courage to uncover it.

It is a must-read for anyone interested in history, espionage, or the complex relationship between different countries during that era.

The original text seems to be rather chaotic and lacks clear structure and content. It's difficult to rewrite and expand it in a meaningful way without more specific details or a more coherent starting point. However, here's a possible attempt:

The situation was so disorganized that it was truly unreadable.

There was a jumble of ideas and information, all thrown together without any rhyme or reason.

It was as if someone had simply dumped a一堆 of words onto the page and expected them to make sense.

The lack of proper sequencing and formatting made it a real challenge for the reader to extract any useful meaning.

It was a frustrating experience, to say the least.

One could only hope that with some serious editing and restructuring, the text could be transformed into something that was both understandable and engaging.

But as it stood, it was a prime example of what happens when things are not properly organized.

You may or may not have learned a great deal about world history in school. However, if you have, perhaps you would be intrigued to discover what the old Soviet KGB and their politburo masters within the Kremlin were engaged in throughout most of the entire Cold War.

This book is a compilation of the actual archives that were typed up by Vasili Mitrokhin of the old KGB over a span of 30 years. It appears that Communists are meticulous record keepers. Later, in 1992, he smuggled these archives out to the west with the assistance of British handlers.

Anyway, it offers a fascinating perspective, among many others, into what truly occurred behind the Iron Curtain. For instance, it reveals how the KGB actually devised plans to carry out sabotage within the USA and Canada. Or how former KGB chief Yuri Andropov actually ordered the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II due to his interference in Polish affairs and support of their Solidarity movement.

If you are a history student and have ever been curious about various stories regarding this spy or that foreign agent, or some scandal hinting at possible Soviet involvement, then this book is definitely for you. It provides a wealth of detailed and eye-opening information that will surely enhance your understanding of this significant period in history.

An Intriguing Glimpse into KGP Espionage

With the assistance of information provided to the US by a defector, we are offered an intriguing look into KGP espionage. The narrative reveals many aspects that are both amusing and intense. The bumbling and disorganized nature of spy work in some sections is rather entertaining, showing the often haphazard attempts at gathering intelligence. On the other hand, the intense moments come from the danger and the alarming proliferation of KGB penetration into sensitive areas. It makes one realize the high stakes and the serious implications of such activities.

Overall, in the context of today's advanced technology, it is hard not to view this type of espionage as something archaic and perhaps even irrelevant. However, despite this, the book still holds value. It provides a decent summary of the turmoil of that particular time period, painting a vivid picture of the political and social unrest. Moreover, it serves as an important link in the chain that leads to today's international relationships. It helps us understand the historical context and the events that have shaped the world we live in today.
