This rather short novel presents a true kaleidoscope of the United States at the dawn of the twentieth century.

The story is narrated by a little boy from a well-off family residing near New York. He refers to himself as 'the boy' or 'the son' and relates tales about Father, Mother, Younger Brother, and others, as if striving to offer an objective report.

The narrative also features real characters such as Henry Ford, Houdini, and Booker T. Washington, who play significant roles.

All of this culminates in a magnificent portrayal of the prosperous America prior to the First World War, yet it also reveals its dark underbelly, encompassing impoverished immigrants, exploited laborers, and discriminated blacks (this final theme is explored in a more detailed manner towards the end).

In my opinion, Doctorow nearly achieved the feat of penning a "Great American Novel," filled with numerous tremendous scenes. This is undoubtedly a display of masterful craftsmanship. However, I still felt that it lacked that extra element to truly elevate it to the status of a "Great Universal Novel."
