If the US is the mecca of capitalism and free market enterprise, Walmart truly epitomizes it. This remarkable book vividly describes how passionate Sam Walton was about the retail industry and how he constructed a mighty empire based on the principle of offering the best price to the customer. Sam Walton was an absolute character. Did you know that he used to fly a plane to manage his stores and scout locations for new ones? I'm starting to realize that one trait common among extremely successful organizations is the tenacity of their founders. If you enjoyed Shoe Dog, you would also like this one, although it dates back a couple of decades earlier.

It's an easy read that delves into various aspects such as the Depression era, the growth story of post-war US, globalization, family, hobbies, church, labor unions, the small retailer debate, and much more. The first quarter is really excellent, but at times it can come across as preachy.

This piece of writing is extremely hokey and overly long winded.

It is filled with numerous anecdotes and messages that seem to be solely for the purpose of stroking the author's ego rather than truly teaching or providing any valuable insight.

The content lacks substance and fails to engage the reader in a meaningful way.

It is so tiresome and uninteresting that it becomes impossible to finish.

One can't help but feel disappointed with the overall quality and effectiveness of this writing.

It seems as if the author was more concerned with self-promotion than with presenting useful information or ideas.

Perhaps with some major revisions and a shift in focus, it could have the potential to be a more worthwhile read.

Many people think that Sam Walton opened the format of discount trading and, by creating stores in small towns, built the largest retail network in the world in this way. There are no miracles. The competition was and is not weak. From the book, it can be seen how much work was required, how much had to be implemented and how many difficulties had to be overcome to build a great company. Although Walton wrote the book in the early 1990s, there are many tools in it that will work now and not only in the retail business. At the end, there are 10 business management rules from Walton and a little philosophical thinking about the meaning of life.

By the way, this is one of the favorite books of Jeff Bezos - the founder of Amazon. Now his company is 4 times larger than Wal-Mart in terms of capitalization.

Now that I'm binging the Acquired podcast, I'm certain that I'll be delving into a plethora of books similar to this one. Currently, I'm really engrossed in startup/entrepreneur business history books. This particular one is quite good. Despite the negative reputation Walmart has received lately, the core values upon which it was founded are truly unassailable.

I think Wal-mart has undergone significant changes since Sam Walton first had the vision for the store.

However, it is rather disheartening to note that in my opinion, despite employing a large number of people, the store has seemingly transformed into a heartless monster.

This book was an extremely inspirational and highly insightful read.

Sam, Mr. Walton, was brought up during the difficult times of the Great Depression. From a very young age, he worked incredibly hard.

I really enjoyed this book as it was one that I could easily relate to. However, it's important to note that Mr. Walton likely worked much harder than I ever have.

This intense hard work, combined with the challenging environment in which he grew up (the Great Depression), is very likely the reason why he was perhaps a bit less charitable than I think I would be in his situation.

Nevertheless, I refrain from passing judgment because this man put in an enormous amount of effort into building his empire and has every right to manage his money in the way he deems appropriate.

My biggest takeaway from this book is that it is of utmost importance to offer the highest quality product to your customers and to invest the necessary sweat equity to see a vision become a reality.

I sincerely hope that Mr. Walton was truly as good of a man as the book portrays him to be. If that is the case, I hope he is now in heaven, looking down and smiling.

As a result, there were several instances where I felt as though I was reading about the same principle over and over again in different chapters.

Nevertheless, despite these minor drawbacks, this book is without a doubt well worth your time. It provides valuable insights and lessons that can be applied in various aspects of business and life.
