DNF at 65%.

Sam Walton was an extremely strange and, frankly, a rather terrible man. He was a career billionaire who, astonishingly, stole from and profited off his workers, as he even admits in this very book! He was vehemently anti-union, which really isn't that much of a surprise considering his business practices. He was a corporatist through and through, responsible for one of the worst atrocities of capitalism - Wal-Mart.

He constantly tries to make you sympathize with him. I've completely lost count of how many times in this book he boasts about how "well sure I'm a billionaire but I still am just a good ol' country boy like some of you." What gets lost in between those rambles is the fact that he owned a second home solely for quail hunting, and he mentions it so casually as if it's something that anyone can afford to do. He also wants you to feel sorry for his father, who, during the Great Depression, was a mortgage broker who would seize people's farms. Yes, you read that right - during the Great Depression, leaving those families penniless and with absolutely nothing. He also wants you to sympathize with how he started his chain of convenience stores before Wal-Mart with a significant loan from his wife's father, but he claims it's okay because he paid him back. Of course, anyone who has ever worked for poverty wages for an extended period of time is likely to struggle to find any sympathy for him. I, for one, have absolutely no sympathy.

He has a truly bizarre fixation on panties. In the first 100 pages alone, he mentions panties at least 7 times. I have no idea if this was his attempt at being humorous or provocative, but it was just plain weird.

As I mentioned earlier, he quite literally admits to having paid his workers as little as possible while he and the other shareholders reaped in millions from the stock market.

Sam Walton: a prime example of the decaying corporatist US Empire.

Why this book was written:

The aim is to provide us with a peek into the life of a remarkable man who transformed a single-store operation into the colossal Walmart, which is now worth a staggering USD 500 Billion.

Synthesis:

Sam Walton had an intense passion for the retail industry. He dedicated himself wholeheartedly, focusing on serving the customers with the most competitive prices. He treated his employees as partners, which was a revolutionary approach at that time. When necessary, he replicated successful business trends and in the process, left his competitors far behind.

Key Techniques:

- Way back in the day, he utilized his small planes to identify new store locations, making him an early pioneer in this regard.

- He often went against the grain, swimming upstream, and emerged victorious.

- He emphasized the significance of having a unified vision, which for him was to offer the lowest prices without compromising on quality.

- He thought from the perspective of each individual store, not just at the aggregate or regional level, even though Walmart had thousands of stores.

- He understood that when you offer discounts, your sales increase proportionally more than the decrease in margin, and he mastered this concept.

This book is highly recommended reading for those who are starting a business.

Being an employee at Wal-Mart for almost three years now, I was certain that this was a book I desired to read. I have a penchant for reading books about companies, especially when the author is the founder. Wal-Mart's story is truly a remarkable tale of America's free enterprise. I must mention that some of the details disclosed in the book regarding employees were either inaccurate or have evolved over the years. I am well aware that many things have indeed changed, and I believe Sam Walton might not have been pleased with some of these alterations.

To give you a better understanding of the amazing success story that Wal-Mart is, I have included a quote from the book below:

"As everybody today knows, Wal-Mart's stock performance, and the wealth it has created, is a story in itself. Just fifteen years ago [this book was published in 1992], the market value of the company was around $135 million; today it's over $50 billion. But here's a better way to look at it: let's say you bought 100 shares back in that original public offering, for $1650. Since then, we've had nine two-for-one stock splits, so you would have 51,200 shares today. Within the last year, it's traded at right under $60 a share. So your investment would have been worth right around $3 million at that price. Obviously, our stock has made a lot of folks happy over the years, and - pure and simple - that's where the Walton family net worth has been created. It paid off beyond any of our dreams."

If you have an interest in learning more about Wal-Mart and/or simply enjoy reading about companies, then this book would be an excellent choice for you!

“American Dream”

Walmart - “We Sell For Less” and “Satisfaction Guaranteed”.

Sam Walton has shown that one doesn't need a fancy degree to pursue their dream. He didn't have an MBA or rich connections. When he opened his first store, he had a burning desire, and it's truly remarkable how far he grew Wal-Mart.

This book is invaluable if you aim to expand a business. You'll witness how Sam Walton transformed a small-town store into an empire. He never cared about appearing wealthy; his sole goal was to build the best company possible and see how far he could take Walmart.

According to his associates, there are several things that set Sam Walton apart from almost everyone else in the organization:

Sam Walton had a firm intention to be completely open about the Walmart story, and he accomplished just that.

He was not only honest but also straightforward and extremely thorough in his narrative. His account was filled to the brim with valuable wisdom regarding the building of a company, or at least a highly successful national retail chain.

Moreover, it was patently obvious what his secrets to success were.

I'm not certain to what extent his story is emblematic of American business in the present day. However, for a young foreigner who has just graduated from college and has only resided in a large city on the East Coast, it sounds entirely novel, something I have never heard before.

Undoubtedly, it has broadened my perspective to a great extent and opened my mind in many ways.

It makes me realize that there are numerous different paths and strategies to achieve success in the business world, and Sam Walton's story serves as a fascinating example.

This is an entertaining read, but it's not recommended for those who want to thoroughly understand the ins and outs of Walmart's business strategy. That being said, the book does provide a somewhat entertaining overview of Walton's principles, the Walmart story, and Walton's life.

Some other notes:

1. Walton often adopts a comically defensive stance towards unions, workers, and expectations for him to give to charity, among other things. While he makes some valid points about corporate social responsibility, his defensive posture and insistence on the effects of his personal charity work are unconvincing and repetitive.

2. This book is written in a very unique style. Throughout the book, there are dialogues of people from Walton's life. Walton and these people often engage in conversations, which creates a jovial, almost podcast-like atmosphere in the text. Additionally, Walton's Arkansanian diction is also effective.

3. It's astonishing to see how similar the Walmart story is to the Amazon story. Both were obsessed with reducing costs for customers and, as a result, paid less than market salaries, implemented intense competition among employees, bargained hard with suppliers, and spent very little on executive overhead, etc. These players triumphed in highly competitive spaces, but the outcome was not always obvious. Walmart was not the first large discounter and faced fierce competition. It's very telling that Amazon and Walmart repeat phraseology centered on the customer so frequently.

Sam Walton: Made in America

"Sam Walton: Made in America" by Sam Walton with John Huey offers a comprehensive and detailed look into the life and business practices of Sam Walton, one of the most successful businessmen in the United States. The book presents several key messages.

Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart, grew up in a modest family during the Great Depression. His parents instilled in him the value of hard work, which he carried with him throughout his life. His early entrepreneurial experiences also taught him valuable lessons.

Despite his humble beginnings, Walton developed a sharp business sense. He was善于观察 and adopted successful sales strategies from his competitors. For example, he implemented efficient checkout processes and cost-saving display techniques.

Customer satisfaction was a top priority for Walton. He offered longer store hours and a wider selection of products, which attracted more customers. Although he faced criticism for allegedly harming small businesses, Walton believed that Walmart's customer-centric approach ultimately benefited local communities.

Walton recognized the importance of competition and embraced it as a catalyst for innovation. He used creative promotional strategies, such as large-scale sales events and competitive pricing, to attract customers and stay ahead of competitors like Kmart.

Initially, Walton's management style was focused on frugality and profits. However, after a visit to England, he transformed his relationship with his employees. He rebranded them as "associates" and implemented profit-sharing initiatives to share Walmart's success with them.

Walton's career was not without its ups and downs. He made a significant mistake by prematurely promoting a CEO, which caused a rift within the company. However, he quickly corrected the situation by reasserting his leadership and implementing effective management strategies.

Walton was also dedicated to philanthropy and education. He provided scholarships to Walmart associates' children and sponsored Central American children's education. He believed that Walmart's low prices had a positive impact on customers and that the company's existence was a form of charity for local communities.

Overall, "Sam Walton: Made in America" highlights Walton's entrepreneurial journey, his customer-centric approach, his innovative business strategies, and his commitment to giving back to society. It offers valuable lessons on the importance of understanding and valuing customers, embracing competition, and creating a positive work environment for employees.

The book provides a comprehensive account of Walton's life, business insights, and philanthropic endeavors, giving readers a valuable perspective on the success of one of the world's largest retail companies.

Sam Walton was truly one of the outstanding business leaders of the past century.

It came as a surprise to me that he launched Walmart when he was already well into his 40s. This fact made me feel youthful, especially when I was beginning to sense that I was getting old in my professional life.

The central theme of this book couldn't be more prominent, and it's all about the customer. The subtleties of Sam Walton's thinking on this matter are crystal clear. Specifically, he believed that the customer - in his case, those in small-town America rather than the slightly more prosperous urban Americans - desired high-quality products at the lowest reasonable price. He let this guiding principle direct his every thought process, from marketing and distribution to the sourcing of goods and beyond. Even the technological innovations that took place were extremely clearly driven by the client.

This kind of intense focus is uncommon in the business world. As a company grows larger, it's all too easy to become mired in the details or start to fixate on economies of scale. This phenomenon exists widely in nearly every industry that one might assume was customer-focused, and it has created enormous opportunities for competitors to step in and steal customers.

I think it will be fascinating to observe Sam Walton's legacy as the retail world transitions from the physical realm to the digital cloud. There are some real challenges that his organization may or may not yet fully understand how to address.

Regarding his management style, I was amazed that even as a highly successful individual, there are numerous tales of him having to battle with his management to implement something that seems so obvious today, like greeters. It took him a full year to get all his regional managers on board. This serves as a reminder that no matter who you are, you still have to sell your ideas.

I'm aware that every biography has a bit of polish and fiction, but there is an abundance of pure business wisdom - regardless of the industry - that makes this book a worthwhile read. The language is down-to-earth, making it a light and enjoyable read to take on vacation or to unwind with after a long day at work. Full marks to Sam Walton for this one.

What do we want from a management book?

It should not be dry and lackluster, but rather have useful and practical information.

This book had all that.

It is one of the favorite books of Jeff Bezos.

The picture on the cover of the book is of an elderly entrepreneur who, like young people with good taste, has a hat on his head and a mysterious smile on his lips. The name of one of the world's largest companies is written on it, Walmart.

Perhaps if Sam Walton were born fifty years later, he would now be the fiercest competitor of Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon.

Because Sam Walton developed the most prominent business model in his era and in the 1980s, he used computer processing to review and balance orders. One of the secrets of success is also "creativity" in business, something that startups do today.

Interesting and key points are hidden inside the book, which have been examined and still provide good answers today.

In conclusion: a influential and useful book for entrepreneurs in the field of business.
