Pierwszy raz tak bardzo utożsamiam się z bohaterem książki. Potrafię w jego emocjach i słowach odnaleźć siebie i może właśnie dlatego, trochę nieobiektywnie oceniam tekst Hessego jako fantastyczny. Jest to historia o smutnym w życiu, a dalsze losy bohaterów uczą nas, że aby być szczęśliwym trzeba przestać żyć dla siebie, a zacząć żyć dla innych, tych których kochamy.

I always appreciate Herman Hesse's novels. It was also an interesting story about a person called Kuhn. For me, most of the story was repetitious as same as other stories, but the relationship between Heinrich and Kuhn was a little bit different rather than other relationships. I just received that a hesitate in Kuhn's decision lead him in different ways with different destinations. Gertrude a young beautiful and lively woman who changed to a depressed by falling in love with Heinrich, She loved him but couldn't live together. Heinrich was a person that couldn't live without drinks and women and who always kept a dog but for Gertrude, He left this situation only for her. So he depended to her and this dependency made him vulnerable.

this is one of my favorite books.

Czy można kochać bardziej?

Ik weet het, ik lees teveel Herman Hesse... Maar hoe is het dan ook mogelijk om niet te dwepen met de op één na meest geniale schrijver uit de menselijke geschiedenis (Aan Thomas Mann kan hij nog nét niet tippen). Gertrude is een redelijk standaard Hesse boek wat het dus automatisch bovengemiddeld goed maakt. De diepgang die het tentoonspreidt over de vereenzaming in een hechte persoonlijke vriendengroep is zeer verfijnd. Daarnaast weet hij ook op de juiste toon over onmogelijke liefdes te schrijven in dit muzikale boek. Want muziek is de rode draad die ieder personage in het boek aan elkaar verbindt en laat het zingen. Een absolute aanrader voor menig Hesse-liefhebber. En voor zij die nog niet van zijn genialiteit hebben mogen proeven zou ik zeggen: begin onmiddellijk want hem links laten liggen is een gemiste kans

Books as lifelike as this one hold a bitter aftertaste when you’ve finally started to truly live yourself.

First time I’m not finding as much recognition in reading Hesse, even though I’m quite sure I would have a year ago, and before that.

I see by the reviews that this novel, Hesse's third, is sometimes seen as a gloss on Nietzsche's Apollonian/Dionysian schema in his The Birth of Tragedy. Unless forewarned, I tend to read novels like I watch movies--like a child, disbelief and critical apparati suspended. After picking this volume up at Stuart Brent Books on Chicago's Michigan Avenue, I devoured it quickly during quiet times at work around the corner on Ontario and saw no great depths or wide horizons of implication in it.
