Bradbury is undeniably a brilliant story teller. Some of these stories were captivating and made me wish they were full novels. Unfortunately, most dragged on even for short stories.

Bradbury is one of the greatest to ever do it, and this collection is pretty solid evidence as to why. Though the first volume, The Golden Apples of the Sun , is a little uneven, the back half, which comprises most of R is for Rocket , is truly spectacular.

There's a through-line to these stories that is subtler by the nigh-omnipresent rockets throughout much of this text; instead, the stories carry within them a palpable yearning, a desire to see more, to do more, than that which is allowed us. The best stories seize that feeling and allow the reader to join Bradbury and share his sense of wonder at the possibilities of the universe around us.

Some of my favourite stories are:

"The Fog Horn"
"The Great Wide World Over There"
"R is for Rocket"
"The Rocket"
"The Rocket Man"
"The Dragon"
"Frost and Fire"

To be honest I didn't finish all the stories. I think I picked it up bc I had seen the movie based on A Sound of Thunder and was curious. The movie is pretty awful btw.
The stories I read were intriguing, well written and sweet. But unfortunately sci fi is probably not my thing at least in short stories. I've enjoyed books by LeGuin and Asimov but I think the short stories are too limiting for me.

dozens of clever, intriguing concepts jammed into one book. overall, i liked most of the stories. some of them were a miss, mostly because i couldn’t get on board with the characters instantly, but many of the plots are thought-provoking meshes of magic, past, and future. stopping halfway but would pick it up again once i have more brainspace—it feels like i have to pause and take a breath after each story. but, i read a sound of thunder (main title on the cover) and loved it.

Along with Ender's Game, this collection of short stories is what got me hooked on science fiction. While these stories aren't strictly science fiction, enough stories dealt with it that it opened new worlds to me. Whether it was "The Rocket Man," about a man who is never satisfied (when he is in space, he only wants to be with his family, and when he is back on earth, he only wants to be out in space), or the classic "A Sound of Thunder," about time traveling safari hunters (don't step on the butterfly!), the stories can be haunting, exhilarating, or sorrowful, reflecting the experiences we all go through.

great collection of sci-fi shorts. contains many classics and some that never got much attention. especially enjoy "the murderer". it's about today. everyone has phones attached to their heads and is talking to everyone all the time. if they're not talking, they're listening to music. one man thinks this is wrong and goes to jail.

I read this book as part of a challenge to myself to read a lot of stories by a classic SFF writer and try to learn from them. I learned a lot about Ray Bradbury's style from reading this collection. He has an interesting mix of high concept stories along with stories that are just about the feelings of every day people (particularly the feelings of those who long for space travel). Highly recommend.

Thunder isn’t the only sound in this collection of short stories by Bradbury. There’s the sound of ancient winds rustling pre-historic forests, sleek rocket ships racing to all corners of space, and the crack of baseball against bat. There’s the sound of adventure in one story, melancholic loneliness in another, and then the sound of optimism in the next—in short, there’s the sound of the human spirit in its various states permeating these pages.

It’s hard for me to put into words just how beautiful the writing and stories are. I took my time, savoring each story and each word. Some I liked better than others, but each evoked in me a sense of childlike wonder. I’ll content myself by simply saying that this was a joy to read. Bradbury is a master, and I can not recommend this collection enough.
