Cute little children's book that imagines what the first days of Baby Jesus's life might have been like (from his perspective). I found an old copy of this at my mother in law's house and was mainly curious about it because it was a Vonnegut book I had never heard of before. The one thing that made me laugh was the bit about "he went to sleep and had a dream... and then a second dream... and then a third dream" with each line on a separate page. I couldn't help but think Okay now you're just going for filler LOL but yeah, this will be a cute addition to any Christmas books shelf.

I don’t remember now how I happened on this book, but I love Vonnegut books, and thought this sounded intriguing. Unfortunately, I love the story behind this book as much, more than the actual book.

Vonnegut was shown a series of paintings and asked it he would write a story to fit them. This book is the result. It's an intriguing take on the Christmas story. The images are, well, odd... strange... extremely minimal. For example, when the narrator closes his eyes, we see a solid red page. True, but not very exciting. We zoom in on the star until the page is mostly white with sharp points partially exposed. It’s an intriguing writing exercise, but not one I care to take on! Kudos for Vonnegut for getting even this odd story out of the paintings.

I ended up making this my “white elephant” for my family’s Christmas exchange. It was a hit there, and I expect to see it return again next year!

A wonderful simple look at the birth of Christ as seen through the eyes of the baby.

My 3-year-old zoned out and my 8-year-old-said "I have no idea what's going on." And I agreed. I am not philosophical enough for this book, which I was excited about reading yet did not finish. It might be a picture book located in the children's picture book section, but "meh" - from my kids who were expecting a relatable story about baby Jesus.

A very unique telling of the birth of Jesus. It's not even overly religious. It's almost mythical in it's telling. I loved the pictures and felt the wording was soothing. I read it out loud to my 6 year old and he settled in and fell asleep to the words and my voice.

I really don't know how to rate this book...it's really beautifully written, and the fact that it was written almost in reverse (Vonnegut adding a story to the already-drawn illustrations by Chermayeff) adds another level of interesting to an already very interesting picture book. It's beautiful, a unique telling of the birth of Jesus Christ from his perspective; the sun, moon, and stars representing different people he sees before him as a human newborn baby. But it's just so...strange. I'll refrain from leaving a rating and just tell everyone to read it.
