Intriguing, but yet there was something missing.

From the very beginning, this book pulls you in. Secret government facility conducting experiments. Super genius scientist who is murdered. Elite squadron of drool worthy men who  of course come to the aide our not-so-damsel-in-distress and thus love follows . Suffice to say, there was action and there was romance. Neither of which was lacking, oh no, quite the opposite.

A few things to note: as this is book one of the series, I did anticipate it being a tad dry. Meaning, this is setting the stage and providing the overall background. So, the overly scientific explanations of how the psychic abilities were enhanced is understandable. Yet, at times it was a bit much and it really offered nothing in terms of the reading experience. Otherwise, I enjoyed the plot, pace, characters, etc.

I don't know if I will ever reread this particular book in the series. It was an interesting read, but overall fell a little short for me.

*I actually read book two and started book thirteen before reading this one - the first in the series. I decided I was a bit too confused, and I wanted to know more of the backstory (to book 13), so I have made the commitment to read this series from start to finish. In other words, my thoughts may be biased seeing how I read this out of order.

I have only read a few of Feehan's books, and read this book on the premise of the story alone. The plot is intriguing, men are given psychic talent boosts in a military experiment that has drastic consequences. The doctor in charge of the experiment is murdered and his daughter is faced with a dilemma. Should she help the men, continue the experiment, or walk away from the thing entirely? To make matters worse she finds a message from her father stating that there is a traitor in her own home. She must track down her father's killer at great risk to herself and her family. All of that makes for a great story, and I was eager to read it.

I enjoyed the first half of this book where Lily is discovering truths about her past, finding information about the men in the experiment, and facing down dangerous enemies. However, after that there is too much repetition. Pain from Lily's past is brought up over and over again, details of her fathers work are explained numerous times. We get no closer to finding out who is responsible for her father's death through all of it. There are no clues given, just the same ideas repeated over and over again. About the romance, let me first say I have read romance books and enjoyed them, I'm not biased for or against romance in any way. The main love interest for our main character is a bit obsessive and flat. Lily tries to push him away for pretty stupid reasons, but he will have none of that. There is no getting to know each other or attraction, just instant love, which I am never a fan of. I give this book 2 stars, instead of 1, only because the plot set up and background information in the first 200 pages or so was excellent. Then it got boring and everything fell apart. As a romance this book would be even lover, as the relationship between the two main characters wasn't very believable or interesting. As a mystery this book isn't very good, as there is no clue finding or investigation, just touching of certain people. For the experiments, Lily's past, and the camaraderie of the soldiers, I give this book 2 stars-I could barely finish it.

What to say about Shadow Game? Some good and some bad. Action scenes? Good. Overall idea? Good. A couple of specific plot devices? Bad.

Hi, I'm a twenty something doctor who is a brilliant researcher with psychic powers. Did I mention that I'm one of the wealthiest people in the world? Well apparently my ability to read people has some holes in it. And my photographic memory? Apparently some of the time there is no film in the camera.

If you can throw up a healthy dose of 'willful suspension of disbelief' the book is actually fun. I don't know as though I'll be running out to find the rest of the Ghostwalker series, but I wouldn't be opposed to reading them either.

Audiobook. I also have the paperback.

I have listened to this author's Dark series and the Romanian accents were a little too much for me. So I came to the audiobooks thinking I'd not like them as much as the other series. I actually liked the audiobook a lot and although the narrator has a very deep manly voice, his softening for the female voice was perfect. For some reason I have read some of the other books in the series but never the first and now I understand why the heroine forgives her dad. I couldn't understand how she could forgive him for the awful things he did early in her life.

I'm planning on working my way through the series.

This took me a little while to get fully into it, what with all the science talk, but really. Who wouldn't want to see these characters happy? I mean Ryland, the hero, and his team of men were living in cages at the start of this book, just because they were having issues controlling psychic powers that they'd gotten from an experiment they'd volunteered for. Lily, the heroine, was the daughter of the scientist who conducted said experiment, and she had a lot to go through in this story, most of which concerned things she learned about her father. There was instant chemistry between her and Ryland, awesome camaraderie between Ryland and his whole team, and even some humor among the suspense plot of discovering what had happened to sabotage the experiment. I liked Ryland for his humor and ease in being a leader, and Lily was an amazingly kind and compassionate heroine. This isn't my favorite of the Christine Feehan series I've read, but at the same time, this is only the first book. We'll see how it goes from here.

This was a pleasant, paranormal-ish romance fiction. Having enjoyed some of Christine Feehan's books in the past and needing some light, entertaining, non demanding novel I started this one.

It was quite enjoyable, scientist Peter Whitney who has collaborated with the American military in the past, has a project underway to enhance the psychic abilities of an elite squadron. We come into the story after the project has been underway for a while, it has boosted the men's natural mental powers and they started to work as an effective unit until something went wrong - no one knows what.

The 'something wrong' has made the men violent and dangerous so the Military man responsible has isolated and imprisoned the men against the recommendation of Dr Whitney.

We come on board as Dr Whitney's daughter Lily comes on the scene. A formidable scientist in her own right, her father hopes she can help determine what is going wrong and he may hope that her own natural psychic ability (a secret from the military) can assist.

When Lily walks into the room containing the cage in which Captain Ryland Miller is being held he is immediately drawn to her in a way he has never been drawn to a woman before. The feeling is reciprocated and that leads us into the romance part of the story.

It is an exciting adventure story-line; the men plan to escape, Lily's father is abducted and murdered, there is an obvious plot on the part of the military man involved in the project. The outcome and adventure part was thoroughly engrossing and a lot of fun. To be honest, I wanted more of the adventure and less of the romance, which tended somewhat toward the repetitious. They have an incredible connection/attraction, he wants her, she isn't confident he really wants her.... They have amazing sex, then they go back to being unsure, the same self doubt that all novels seem to have to insert... ect ect

I don't mind a bit of Proforma romance cliche though there was a bit too much of it here and I was quite bored with it at times. I definitely wanted more of the action, more of the plot. A few times when Lily and Ryland were getting hot and heavy, or starting on the never-ending "will you still love me if you find out (yawn)..." I really wanted to shake them and say "FOCUS! You are in the middle of a jailbreak/ risky extraction/ assassination attempt here. Get on with it already.

Anyway, despite my usual moaning about romance cliches, in general it was fun reading with a very decent ending. I went straight on to the number two in the series and even ordered in number three, I was that sure of wanting to read more. When the source of Lily's 'natural' psychic powers are revealed, in a nice plot convolution, we are all set up for the rest of the series. At times I can be quite angry and harsh on books that set you up TOO obviously for a sequel but that was not a problem here at all. The story arc was completed, information that can be used in subsequent novels was certainly provided, but I liked what the author did with it.

So, in general, well done! I shall read more.

^^I LIKED IT!^^

So I read this book as apart of one of the Romance Readers challenges featuring author Christine Feehan. This was my first book by this author and I am unsure if it will be my last. Where I did like the book; there was many things missing from it, like the lack of a hot sex scene, they were all pretty lukewarm to me. Maybe I am just greedy, but I like a good sex scene damn it. So this is the life of the GhostWalkers, humans who walk this earth undetected, unstoppable and dangerous. Equipped with wicked psychic abilities that can deter the enemy and make them invisible to the eyes.

The book begins with Captain Ryland Miller locked in a cage and extremely pissed off, seems he volunteered to be a apart of an experiment to enhance is rather remarkable attributes. Under the watchful eyes of doctors and scientist, they will unlock psychic abilities that was laying dormant in his brain. Well things were going well until they started to treat Ryland and his men like animals, because what do you do when the thing you created becomes too powerful, you try to destroy it. Well Ryland is having none of that, he is gonna get out of his cage and rescue his men. The down side, since the opening of their minds they are more receptive to emotions and pain and that is making them hard to live. Until Lily Whitney walks through the medical doors, and bam Ryland has found his true love and maybe a way to finally live.

Lily Whitney lives for the next experiment until she does a favour for her dad. That favour becomes the deciding point in Lily’s life. She is about to be thrown into a game of cat and mouse that she never expected. Plus she has this unbreakable psychic connection with the very sexy Ryland Miller, from their first meeting he has become apart of her. Lily is thinking that this connection might be unnatural or some how modified by her fathers experimenting ways. What’s real is that she wants him and denying the attraction is very hard to do, but with all this lovey dovey stuff there is a real threat. Someone wants them dead and its only a matter of time before they strike.

So now it’s a race to figure out how to help Ryland and his men live an ordinary life, make them able to control the abilities. I really enjoyed the flow of the book, a little long and drawn out in some places but it had a bit of something, that always intrigued me. Ryland I thought was sexy but…. He just didn’t get all my juices flowing and Lily was a bit annoying with moments of likeability. Together they meshed well, but didn’t really bring the house down. There was a whole lot of if I dont have you I cant breathe, and my life was a dark night until you brought the sun and daylight in to it. You know the mush fest that goes with falling in love. Was semi-sweet at times.

I did enjoy the other characters and it was a great way to set-up for future books, the easiness with which they got along was a definite high point in the book and it had me laughing. A bit drawn out, but it’s the first book in a series and they tend to go on forever. Will I continue the series, still very undecided at this point. If you are person that enjoy a little mystery and a well plotted story line then this book might be your cup of tea.

Also no swearing, and dirty words “huh”, very rare in books. I am unsure if I liked that or completely hate it.

The first book in the GhostWalkers series by Christine Feehan. Captain Ryland Miller and other men volunteered for a special classified experiment that deals with psychic abilities. But now they are kept in cages and some of his men are dying. The scientist's daughter is brought on board to help with the experiment but soon realizes that something isn't right.

The story was just okay for me. I see that it is highly rated by many of my friends here but I didn't feel it. I never felt the story ever truly grabbed me.
