This is the best of the three Julie Garwoods I've read to date, but it too suffers from that same gaggy style of romance writing when it comes to love scenes. The story here, however, isn't bad. The concept is that computer software giant Jordan Buchanan crosses paths with an eccentric professor whose research implicates her Scottish ancestors in improbably negative ways. After meeting him at a family wedding, Jordan travels to a nowhereseville town where she is caught up in a series of murders, falls into the hands of totally crooked cops and, were it not for the fact that she has FBI field agents as brothers, another sibling highly placed in the Dept. of Justice, and a dad who is a federal judge (how convenient!), she'd really be in trouble. There is, of course, a goofy and utterly predictable romance with her brother's lifetime friend (and co-worker FBI agent) Noah Campbell--complete with nearly every romance novel cliche and predictable unrealistic perfet ending. The story, though, is still pretty good and Garwood is able to retain the identity of the actual criminal mastermind until very late in the story. This is very much the book equivalent of empty calories, but if you're looking for a quick airport read while traveling over the holidays, you could do a lot worse.

I felt the spark was missing between Jordan and Noah...oh well, the mystrey was kind of nice though a little predictable.I am giving it a 4 star rating because of the outlandish tales from the professor's research.

This was a quick read for me, and honestly had some really funny parts. Only downside for me was the romance felt a little forced, and there was A LOT of characters. I had to go back and reread a few parts to make sense of who was speaking and about who. Other than that I loved the mystery aspect of it and Jordan’s blunt sense of humor !

I mean… more like 1.5 stars. The writing was not great. The characters were not well developed. And it turns out this series is NOT a bunch of loosely-related standalones, which I realized quickly when the author barely bothered to explain the massively tangled web of background characters. So I ended up reading #6 in a series before the earlier books, which is absolutely something I never do because my brain cannot handle things being out of order. However: the mystery plot was intriguing enough that it kept me going. Even after this woman referred to email as “cybermail”. It was written in 2007, not 1994… come on.

I've loved Noah for several books now, and just wanted more from his book. I don't feel like we really got to know him, or see much of his process.

Still enjoyed it, but I wanted more.

Re-read June 2017
I think the problem is ... Noah has been built up so much over the last couple books, it is probably impossible to not be mildly disappointed when we finally get his book. I mean, there wasn't anything wrong with it, exactly - the plot was a good mystery, and there were parts that were absolutely hilarious.

Jordan was okay ... but that's probably, again, because Noah has been so built up that she just doesn't feel like his equal. And I'm also not really buying ... they've known each other forever, and spending a couple days together, they are suddenly like "hey, I love him/her!" I don't think that was sold.

And lastly, I feel disappointed because ... I don't feel like I know Noah any better than I did before. Isn't that odd? It occurs to me that there were some places in the book, where we might have gotten some more personal details / insight, but Garwood just informed us that the conversation happened. Like, in one part there's like, a paragraph saying Jordan and Noah talked about growing up, and how he was an only child that envied the fun of her house full of siblings. Why couldn't we have actually HAD that conversation, rather than just be informed that it happened? And that happened multiple times, about multiple things, too. Like, even in the end, you get a paragraph that says Noah told Jordan about his job and the stresses... rather than actually getting the conversation.

It's weird, and it felt oddly detached.

Noah deserved better.

The Buchanan family in modern times. I have read all the Buchanan series from 1 to 6 so far. It is fun to see how Julie Garwood keeps everything in historical order. Her book series all tie together in one way or another.
Jordan meets an unusual man at her brother and friend's wedding. She and Noah, a friend, discuss her life as a "comfort zone". So she decides to go to Texas and meet with the unusual man who is a Professor. He gives her his research on the MacKenna family to copy and send home to Isabel, her friend's sister.
Her car needed to be repaired and so she felt she had time to make copies and set out for home. After she gets her car back, she finds the dead professor in her trunk. The police are not very friendly but thankfully she was able to get a hold of her brother, Nick, and Noah who are FBI agents. Her life spirals downward as she finds another dead body in the trunk of a car the FBI provided for her.
She finally gets out this small Texas town. And wait until you read what happens to her next.
Mystery, romance, death all live up to Julie Garwood's exciting books.

I've loved Noah's character in the other books so I couldn't wait to read his book. I would have liked it more if he was paired with someone else. I always found Jordan a bit shallow. The romance between these two was lacking but the mystery aspect was good.

Lastima.

nada esperaba y nada me dio.

Very disappointed in this BR book. I have read all of this series, and others she has written, so I was so interested in these 2 characters, Jordan and Noah. The story line was ridiculous; the dialogue wasn't smart or witty; no intrigue; the whole MacKenna/Buchanan Scottish feud history was ridiculous. The rich and brilliant computer expert rents a broken down car? I skimmed most of the 1st half to get past all that hee-haw country town stereotyped characters.

And there's no juicy love story! Hardly any chemistry between these 2, and why in the word is playboy Noah even interested in Jordan?

JG's formula is now old; she always a trend with the men just disappear for a while after the mystery/danger is over without communicating with the woman. Tedious.
