I really enjoyed this book - it focuses on female communities and gossip as a way to share, laugh, and overcome pain together.

Marjane Satrapi lives by converting her family history into graphic novels. Her magnum opus The Complete Persepolis was absolutely mind-blowing, and it was this book which got me hooked to the genre of graphic novels in general. In this book, the mood is not as heavy, but definitely a lot more naughty as Iranian women from three generations, after sending the men off to sleep after dinner, discuss their sexual escapades, misadventures and fantasies. Some are painful, some are weird, and some are hilarious - all, extremely readable.

At the end, when Marjane's grandpa hears the fag end of the conversation and asks what it is about, grandma says: "Well, really, Satrapi! What's it got to do with you? Go on, go to sleep! It's better for you." And the poor man returns to the bedroom, crestfallen.

I loved this. Drawing room feminism!

This Is the first Graphic Novel I have ever read and I absolutely adore it.
Firstly, I love that it's based in Iran, where I wouldn't expect women sitting and talking so freely about sex, marriage, losing virginities and divorces. I know I sound like I have stereotypes about women living in Iran, but to be frank, most of us do until we meet people from a particular place or visit it. And i don't know if I would ever be that lucky but the novel provides some realistic and hilarious insight into the world of a group of ladies of various ages, some still learning and making mistakes and some who have had a a lot of life experiences to provide some great advice !

Also, you can probably get through it in one-sitting.

Story about various Iranian women. They're sit back and relax in the afternoon while sipping a hot cup of tea. But not just that, they all have a tale to tell.
And the story begin...

Pertama-tama ketika nge-mark as to read gw pernah komen n  "Mari ngebordir"n, yang dikasi komen sama Lita di message #1 dan saya ngasi komen n  "wah, rok mini mah cepet keknya ngebordirnya, siap lah"n di message #2. Nah, setelah beres membaca bukunya, dengan ini saya nyatakan kalau saya menarik kembali kedua komen saya itu.

Kenapa? begini...
Dari dulu sayah bukan pembaca komik/novel grafis dan sama sekali gak ngeh sapa itu Marjane Satrapi. Iseng ke kaki lima nemu buku ini masih diplastikin, dan di plastikna ada stiker dengan tulisan gede & tebel "DEWASA". Wah, dewasa! adult entertainment kah? the evil hippo inside me begging & screaming like hell to take this book home. Dan setelah meriksa KTP buat ngecek umur dari tarik urat leher sama penjualna ahirna bukuna bisa di bawa pulang dengan harga 15 rebu. Soal isina apa samasekali gak tau, yang penting ada tulisan "DEWASA" nyah, hahaha.

Nah, setelah itu bukuna disimpen aja gak dibuka dulu sehari, niatna masukin aja dulu bukuna di rak gudrid  tapi ahirna memutuskan baca dulu ripyu dari teman2 yang sudah ngerating buku ini  dan muncul lah kalimat2 seperti ini:

Ni buku kocak syekali ternyata, hiyahahaha.
nah segitu aja sih ripyu nya :D

Jadi kalo mengacu kembali ke "bordir" yang dimaksud disini dan komen sayah "mari ngebordir" jelas jadi ngaco jadina. untuk itu lah saya menarik kembali komen saya :D

Pelajaran yang saya tarik dari buku ini:
*kalo bikin kopi gak bakalan pake krimer lagi, cukup kopi item aja dah, hahaha
*satu kalimat yang bakal terngiang-ngiang terus adalah ketika rumpian ibu2 ini sudah berpindah topik masih ada seorang ibu yang penasaran.. "putih2 itu apa sih?"

To talk behind one’s back is to ventilate the soul.

Ever since the book started, I was assuming the usual conservative meaning for ‘embroideries’, but boy! Wasn’t I wrong! (Me trying to cover my laughter with my right palm, unsuccessfully)

May be this is the first book completely devoted to gossip that I am reading, except for the brief pieces in Voltaire and Wilde. Gossip is what they also feed on, but there is sharp distinction between a man looking at a woman’s gossip and a woman looking at it from inside. And of course, they looked down at it, a feeling shared by people who always thinks they have better things to do rather than talk of other people, a feeling shared by the most humble me also.

So, the question of virginity. Well, that’s one thing no one wants to ask but everyone wants to know, especially when one is getting married. (I am talking about the geographical area I am present in, in a rural setting) It is so prominent a topic that there are multiple YouTube videos/movie scenes that have taken the reformative role to teach the society ‘why IT isn’t so important’. I still doubt the extent to which they have become successful. But hope is still high with topics such as female sexuality being taken up more and more in intellectual and popular circles.

On a very funny line, Satrapi brings out the background truths in a patriarchal society. This could have been a conversation happening in India also, just the names would have changed. And she holds on to the femininity of the entire conversation.

A very light, and light-hearted read!

Na vsak način sem se izogibala popularnosti risoromanov, saj to vendarle niso tiste prave knjige, kajne? Ko sem za knjižni izziv izbrala to knjigo, nisem vedela, da sem dobila prav to, risoroman. Po čudnem začetku prvih treh strani, pa je to knjiga, ki me je res dobro nasmejala. Ženske, ki pijejo popoldanski čaj in poleg opravljajo, s tisto kruto direktnostjo, ki je tako zelo resnična, da sem si prav vse v resnici predstavljala in se... samo zabavala. Odlična!

I really felt like reading this book with B. O. It felt like it's a book to be read with. It's a woman-to-woman book, so in this case I should read it with B. O. who has revealed so many fuzzy things considering women's stuff!

After lunch, men tend to take a nap, but women tend to gather together to gossip! So a group of 8 women -including Marjane herself- sharing their different sexual and marital experiences and talking about other women's stories including even deceased ones!





Satrapi has this light sense of humor regardless of her discussing so many horrible social topics in her homeland. I really enjoyed reading for her.

Tračanje je po definiciji vrlo loša navika, ali u Vezenju to jednostavno nije. Kroz crteže i zanimljive dijaloge, svaka čitateljica postat će dio tog kruga povjerenja u kojemu se ne priča o drugima samo kako bih ih se ocrnilo. Naprotiv, pričaju se priče kako bi se podijelilo životno iskustvo i pogreške koje su se vrlo lako mogle izbjeći. Osim toga, bez ustručavanja se dijele i vlastita iskustva, ponekad gotovo sramotna da ih je teško prevaliti preko usta. Ipak, nevolja postaje lakša kada se podijeli sa ženama kojima vjeruju. Razgovor odlazi i u smjeru vezenja, no za više detalja o toj čarobnoj višeznačnoj riječi morat ćete zaviriti među crteže Marjane Satrapi.

Ovim odličnim grafičkim romanom, Satrapi razbija predrasude o muslimanskim ženama. One nisu konzervativne, uštogljene, bez iskustva i mišljenja – one su smjele, duhovite, pametne, lascivne, pune iskustva. One su snažne žene!

İran'daki kadınların kendi aralarında toplumsal tabulara karşı konuşmalarından oluşuyordu.

Le ton est léger, avec une bonne dose d'humour, malgré un sujet plutôt grave, ce qui nous fait un mélange intéressant. Chaque histoire représente un aspect de l'intimité des femmes iraniennes, et laisse apercevoir à la fois les mailles d'une société et ses traditions, ainsi que les changements qui la traverse aujourd'hui.
Au final, rien de particulièrement transcendant, mais c'est drôle et intéressant et ça mérite bien une petite lecture.

Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis books came to my mind last week when I was thinking about adding in some lighter reads such as some more graphic novels and manga this year.

I read the Persepolis books several years ago and watched the movie. I wondered if the public library in my town might have some of her books on hand since they've just added in a collection of graphic novels upstairs for adult readers. I was happy to find this one and another of her works.

In Embroideries the art was not as carefully done (looked slapped together, too hectic at times) as in her Persepolis series, but I still enjoyed the story. It was a quick, light humorous read, a lighthearted look at serious topics.
