I can tell this is supposed to be a romance. Is this really what women in the past wanted to read? “My husband is mean and rapey, but at least he’s less mean and rapey than the other mean rapist.” “Also eff that nasty rape baby, I’m not sad about that at all.”

Ahhhhhh I love a good Western.

Sandra Brown was one of my gateway drugs into the romance genre as a teen. I hadnt read anything by her in years. Glad I found this one. I really enjoyed Lydia and Ross's slow trek to love. But Ma Langston was the glue that held this story together. She knew they were meant to be before they did. This storyline with the abuse probably triggered some people based on the reviews but it didnt bother. The angst level was higher than I usually liked but Sandra Brown is still one of the best.

This was so beautifully angsty. I loved the scathing verbal hate that Ross repeatedly punished Lydia with when they were first forced to be together, and then off and on through the rest of the story. I know that's wrong, but asshole heroes are my sickness.

Poor Lydia had such a horrific past and had very little self esteem left by the time she was found and rescued by the good people she came to know as friends. Ross's hateful name calling and rude assumptions of Lydia reduced her confidences even more. Her verbal abuses were heartbreaking to experience in this story. I loved every word until towards the ending when Lydia suddenly lost her brain and started making ridiculous decisions that were not only deadly to her friends, but more importantly, to her immediate family.

Those frustrating pages of Lydia's stupidity almost had me knocking off an entire star from this story. Aside from the part of the story where I wanted to throttle Lydia myself, I adored every bit of the rest of this angsty goodness. And despite Lydia acting like a moron for a while, I know I'm going to re-read this one again in the future when I need a good angst fix, so the star is staying on and now I'm off to read the next story in this saga.

4.5 stars... What a pleasant surprise Sunset Embrace was. I wasn't expecting this book to evoke such deep emotions in me from the beginning.

We meet Lydia in the woods writhing in pain as she is birthing a child that she doesn't want and was made with violence and hate. She is taken in by a beautiful family that takes wonderful care of her and she also finds herself needed by Ross who just lost his wife during childbirth. Lydia has milk to feel baby Lee and this is where the story takes off.

This is my first novel by Sandra Brown I found her writing to be so realistic and honest. Her description of nursing, pregnancy and motherhood was refreshing. I gave me flashback to nursing my own children.

I cannot wait to read the next book in the Coleman Family Series.

Sandra Brown's books have a certain familiarity after you read a few. Most of them are one off's, not series, and I love that about her writing.

This story has a very different setting than most of her books I've read. The outline she typically uses to write is similar in "Sunset Embrace". Lots of tension and heated love. The big change up here is the era of the story which is set around the mid 1800's following an migrating wagon train bound for Texas. This in contrast to the modern day stories I've read from her arsenal of very well written and entertaining stories.

Really enjoyed this one. Sometimes the setting up of the tension by the author can be frustrating because you know it's foolish of the character to think or do certain things, but this is an important tool in any well made story.

Looking forward to jumping into another from Brown's large catalog. Cheers.

This audiobook was provided by the Author/Publisher through Audiobook Jukebox for an honest review

I will start the review by admitting that I did not really check more then the blurb “Lydia and Ross have both been hurt in the past. However, they find themselves thrown together, fighting the same enemy and unable to stop the events that will eventually pit one man's vengeance against the strength of a woman's love.” So was not expecting a historical western, not really one of my favorite genres…I like more contemporary western/cowboys. That being said, it was not horrible, just not my cuppa tea….what saved the book for me was an excellent narrator, Ellen Archer did a fabulous job, if I had been reading the book I would have DNF’d it but the narration was good enough to keep me listening.

This is my first Sandra Brown book and while well written, I think I will try something more recent as “historical romance” is not something I gravitate towards. So story wise I would say for me it was only about 2 stars but the narration was 4 stars

I don't like giving one star to an author with skill. The author has skill but the story was not for me. I stopped at 30% of this book. The hero seemed to really detest heroine more than any book I can remember and for stupid reasons. Ugh I really disliked this book.

A lot of extremely successful Romantic-Suspense authors started with Historical-Romance and Sandra Brown has a few. This book blends both the genres and very well. With the Civil War ended a group from Tennessee is traveling by wagon train to Texas. Even though some of the situations wouldn't pass muster these days, it was reality in the 1800's. Well written, fully developed characters and the Audio was fantastic.

Lydia escaped the hell of her life, giving birth to a stillborn baby in the woods. She is found by boys from the wagon train and taken in by a wonderful family. Soon after, Ross's wife, Victoria, dies in child birth and the baby would die too unless he would feed and the only available wet nurse is Lydia. Ross is not receptive to the wanton looking woman who gave birth with no husband. Both Lydia and Ross have dark histories and it takes a lot for them to find their way to each other. Unfortunately, those dark histories are not going to stay history and the past is stalking them both.

This is a typical western style romance. it is a re release of an old book that i gathered sandra brown had published under another name? some pretty steamy scenes. some illogical/irrational behavior between the female and male character used as a device to create tension. overall i liked the story and it was a good read if you want something not too mind bending and good escapism, which is after all why I read romances.
