I enjoyed listening to this book while driving. It reminded me of stories I heard from my family about life in the USA in the 1930's, Carter's from the south, mine from the midwest. It was life before electricity and indoor plumbing where the newspaper and the new fangled radio kept folks connected to the world while they were focused on getting food on the table. Easy listening about hard working Americans-the lifeblood of this country's success.

I really enjoyed this wonderful book about Jimmy Carter's childhood. It was very interesting and told with great love for his family and community. I felt like a learned more about who he is and why he has been so interested in alleviating poverty and working on other social causes since leaving the Presidency. Great read for those who like southern memoirs, books about politicians or Presidents.

I know, I know, SNL has panned his books. But what is most compelling about this charming book is its description of a type of childhood that no longer exists. How would this future president developed in a modern adult-programmed childhood?

50 States and At Least 50 Authors 2018 Reading Challenge. GEORGIA.

President Jimmy Carter, a quiet, honest, honorable man tells the story of his childhood and the people who shaped him, many of the the blacks who were prevalent in his life. Occasionally repeats something he has already mentioned, but still worth reading. An interesting man who tells an uncensored story.

I had to read this book for class but I LOVED it. Jimmy Carter is a good writer, and this autobiography focused on his boyhood in Plains. I was reading for the historical mindset for class but it was so interesting and informative. Almost like a "modern" Farmer Boy. So descriptive, and it's hard to believe it wasn't that long ago that South GA farmers lived so primitively.

Growing up in a small town

My close friends as a child were not black they were boys.
My father had rheumatoid arthritis and my mother worked to support our family, along with daddy's pension. In the first part of this book, I did and enjoyed almost all of the things that Mr Carter did. He was four years older than I. Feel as if we grew up together.

Interesting if only from a historical perspective; depression era living, though the Carter's were clearly better off than most other working class people in the South. The book is really just a Carter family history, anecdotal and engaging - probably caters more toward fans of the former president and current humanitarian than his detractors, of which I am the former.

This is an insightful book. Carter writes about his childhood growing up on a farm in small town southern Georgia, during the Great Depression and the days when segregation was an accepted cultural fact. I liked how variuos people influenced his life, from a strong willed father to helpful Negroes who lived nearby.

This is a wonderfully detailed look at the rural life led by President Jimmy Carter growing up. He examines the economic and social relationships of everyone in the community and how each survives. He explains the interracial relationships before integration. His parents were very resourceful and kind, instilling these values in their children.

An Hour Before Daylight: Memories of a Rural Boyhood by Jimmy Carter (Touchstone Books 2001) (Biography). This is just like Pop’s upbringing, and it is comparable to Ferrol Sams’ writings. I liked it very much. My rating: 7/10, finished 1/1/2011.

Edited 5/27/18 - Added a star and increased my rating to 7.25/10.

Jimmy Carter is obviously a reader. The writing is literate but not dazzling. This book is rough around the edges, but still worthwhile. An Hour Before Daylight is a sincere and sensitive account of an extraordinary life. Jimmy Carter is a great American, and his story is a moving and inspiring one.

In this memoir, former president Jimmy Carter discusses his childhood and how he grew up on a farm in Georgia. I really enjoyed reading this book and I admired the way in which Jimmy developed a strong work ethic and good values while being raised in the Depression era. He definitely wasn't one of those presidents born with a silver spoon in his mouth! A must read for history buffs!
