Written in a way that made this easy reading and you almost felt like President Carter was sitting and talking with you. Being a fourth-generation native Floridian, I know that my grandparents and great-grandparents would have had similar recollections of growing up on a farm. It mady my past heritage more accesible to me. A very pleasuable read!

I'm not exactly sure why, but I really enjoyed this book. I liked hearing about rural GA at the beginning of the 20th century and it was refreshing to hear how much respect Carter had for his parents.

A view into the experiences that formed the man whom history will judge as a great President, this book is worthy of your consideration. The ethic of hard work, leading by example, and appreciating others for who they are rather than the color of their skin were all lessons learned in the Carter household. This is a beautiful recollection of a time gone by.

This was an abridged audio version read by the former President himself, Jimmy Carter. The man is a model for what an ex-president should be like.

I was thoroughly engrossed almost throughout the book. The fascinating voice of Mr. Carter and the interesting stories kept me listening intently. While I found some similarities with my own boyhood, basically the South seems to me like another planet, and I felt like I was reading a science fiction story. And a wonderful one.

I have just completed listening to this book during my morning walks. It brings back fond memories of my childhood and walking the fields with my grandfather. Jimmy Carter describes his childhood in Plains, Georgia and the people that influenced his life. The most eloquent thing I can say about this book is that it made me feel good to hear the stories about farm life, the depression, and progress of our country through difficult times in our history.

This was not particularly great writing, but it tells an interesting story about a kind of life that is fading fast, and a time of life that saw many landmark changes. It's the kind of book that you can read over a month or two - picking it up when you've just finished a page turner and now you need to read something that will allow you to stop and do laundry.

Every now and then I take a break from fiction for something else. I found this when browsing a table with books about and by various US presidents. This has been a very enjoyable journey into the past and given me new insight into Jimmy Carter, who I have always liked. His writing style is easy to get into, and while some parts move a bit slowly, still interesting. Lots of old photos as well.

What a fantastic and refreshing read. So much detail here, so many memories and personal stories. I listened to this read by the author himself which I think made it all the better. Like listening to my grandpa.
Not only is this remarkable because it's Jimmy Carter but overall because it's such a vivid glimpse into the life of a child growing up in Georgia during this time period. Amazing history here. Quite enjoyed this.

Nostalgic descriptions of farming and raising animals in rural Georgia in the early part of the 20th Century reminded me of reading the Little House books as a child. Carter also touches on race relations in segregated rural Georgia, and the African American people who were close friends of his forward-thinking family. It's definitely worth reading, and amazing to think of this little boy growing up to be President.

I absolutely loved this book. It is not an action packed adventure if that is what you are after. However, it is an amazing glimpse into life in the South during Jimmy Carter's boyhood years. Carter shares this period of history in rural Georgia from his perspective. I found it fascinating to put myself in his place and to think about how his childhood experiences formed his character. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Yes, this is a book about farming in Georgia during the Depression, and I really found it fascinating. You get a glimpse into the upbringing of a future president of the U.S., and which of his childhood experiences he felt helped to mold his life. Learning about his experience roaming the land as a very young child, made me wish for that same experience for my children, without the hook worms.

Jimmy Carter is my personal hero. He may have failed miserably as a president, but he is a true leader when it comes to more lasting matters.

And this book gives great insight into what made him into the person he is. He's not the best writer, but it doesn't really matter.
