One of the most interesting books I've read. Makes a lot of sense. Basically he argues that alcohol doesn't provide you any pleasure, and you only drink it so long as you think it does. It doesn't taste good, as the purer the alcohol the worse it tastes and the only things that make it taste good are mixers. He argues it doesn't give you confidence, it just numbs your senses and thoughts including thoughts of fear, and fear is there for a reason, to stop you doing stupid things. He compares alcohol to a sleight of hand magic trick where you are conned into seeing the illusion. Well worth the read, one of the best books of the 70 odd I've read this year.

Recovering alcoholic

Been to private clinic and AA. This book has given me invaluable tips about remaining abstinent, dealing with schizophrenic thinking, misidentification of hunger and tiredness from cravings. I feel free after reading this, looking forward to the rest of my life.

Kindle. It is good and some of the messages are very true and do make you think and reflect on your alcohol consumption. However it gets very repetitive and I think much more aimed at people with a problem with alcohol as opposed to someone who just wants to cut down therefore some of it just became a bit frustrating as had no truth in my life. Still food for thought and some good points on the very negative aspects of alcohol.

This book was very helpful and gave me a refreshing perspective. I have recommended it to lots of people who also have enjoyed it.

Lulls you into a false sense of security before demanding you once and for all give up ever drinking alcohol.

Read this as I'm 25 and I feel like it's time to start pursuing other ways of finding exhilaration on the weekends besides getting shitfaced.

Result: so far, I've been a lot more cautious about even drinking any hard alcohol. Carr's method effectively shoots down any argument you might have for drinking with one logical counter: it's literal poison. You didn't enjoy it when you were young either, but you trained yourself to like it. You still have to water down spirits. But society tells us kids drink juice boxes and soft drinks and adults drink alcohol and that's just the way it has to be.

Another thing that really changed my mind about getting shitfaced was when he said, since you love alcohol and it reduces your senses sometimes to the point of unconsiousness, then you must think going a few rounds with McGregor in the Octagon is positively charming.

Don't really know what else to say about this book as I don't normally review self-help books. Can't even say for sure I'll stick to my guns. But it has filtered through on some level, which I think is what I needed. So based on that, yes it good.

I didn’t read this book because I thought I had any problem with alcohol - I read it to see HOW he convinces ‘alcoholics’ to quit, like I read his stop smoking book 12 months ago even though I don’t smoke, but he got me! I realised that I DID have an alcohol problem (just not in the typical way I thought, but in other ways presented logically and rationally in the book). Without even realising, he worked his magic on me and I’m now a non-drinker and I’ve had my last drink.

There are no words. This book is a game changer. Forget all other addiction memoirs and how-tos. I mean, go ahead and read them, but if you’re looking for a long lasting farewell to alcohol (or any other drug) this book (or any of his others) will do the trick.

Carr’s no bullshit approach was just what I needed to nix it once and for all without suffering cravings, without the use of willpower (cuz that shit’s finite), and without doubt.

A bit repetitive at times but has all the good intentions. Really accomplishes putting things into perspective and readjusting mindsets around alcohol.

Still probably dangerous to quit cold turkey if you’re drinking a ton everyday. I’ve heard stories about seizures and stuff so this book is definitely not for those people. But for the people who have tried and failed or are sober curious, this can be a great book.

It is quite repetitive, but I understand that it's necessary for person who is in the alcohol trap. Now I know that I really don't want to drink any of this poison, not even a bit

Two years after quitting smoking, thought I'd give this book a try to see if it can guide me towards cutting out alcohol from my life completely.
