In het boek 'Zorro' vertelt Isabel Allende de (fictieve) geschiedenis van de geboorte en de jonge jaren van de legendarische Diego de la Vega, ofwel Zorro.

Zoals vaste lezers van Allende gewend zijn, pakt het boek je vanaf de eerste bladzijde. Zij heeft een unieke vertelstijl. In dit boek lijkt het alsof er een derde persoon als feitelijke schrijver actief is, die jou als lezer af en toe ook aanspreekt.

Ook bekend van de werken van Allende zijn de steeds terugkerende thema's als vriendschap, liefde, trouw, verraad, familiebanden en sterke vrouwen.

Uit die laatste categorie komen we diverse personages tegen: de moeder een grootmoeder van Diego, en de beide dochters van zijn goede vriend Thomas de Romeu. Stuk voor stuk boeiende karakters, evenals Diego zelf overigens en zijn 'pleegbroer' Bernardo.

We zien hoe Diego opgroeit in Californië, ten tijde van de Spaanse overheersing aan het eind van de 18e en begin 19e eeuw, en vriendschap sluit met zowel de lokale Indiaanse bevolking als de katholieke missionarissen die diezelfde Indianen proberen te bekeren. Als hij als jongeling naar Spanje wordt gestuurd om daar te studeren, vallen we in de periode van de Franse overheersing van Spanje.

Terug in Amerika maken we o.a. kennis met de (echt bestaande) zeepiraat Jean Lafitte, die aan het begin van de 19e eeuw de Caraïbische Zee en Golf van Mexico onveilig maakte.

Ook dit is allemaal een van de charmes van Allende's boeken: verweven in een fictief verhaal leer je veel over de geschiedenis van Amerika en Europa. Het boek ademt de sfeer van de Spaanse adel, de wereld waarin Zorro opgroeit en opgevoed wordt.

Al met al een boek dat van kaft tot kaft boeit en je meesleept in een mengeling van avontuur, romantiek en historie. Van harte aanbevolen!

What is it about Zorro? Back when the Disney channel was watchable by people over age 16, they showed the Guy Williams Zorro, the ones in black and white. The show is far older than I am, but it's still cool. There was also the Zorro series on the Family Channel (what is now ABC Family). That series was good, far better than the Black Stallion series on the same channel. And who can forget Antonio and Catherine?

Zorro is the American version of Robin Hood. He works in California before the Americans stole of Spain, but there is something American about him. His weapon of choice is no the bow, but the sword. Zorro also has style, his famous Z, and a beautiful horse. He also comes without the baggage of Robin Hood. No matter how much one may love Robin Hood, it is difficult to irgnore the fact that sometimes Robin Hood targets innocent people (those soliders had families after all). Since Zorro doesn't kill, this question is moot.

Zorro is cool.

Zorro's fashion sense predates Batman's, but Zorro lacks Batman's angst. Zorro is an everyday hero. He sticks to the man with the humor and good nature of a comic.

He's sexy.

Allende's story of Zorro focuses on the Fox's beginnings. In the P.S., section of the book, Allende says she hopes the story was realstic. It is. It is an entirely believable superhero story.

It also feels a bit like a Hollywood movie, and it is Zorro, so this is okay. Strangely, the cliches don't annoy because they seem to be tongue in cheek. There also is the question of the narrator. In some ways, the narrator becomes far more intersting than the character of Zorro himself. The speaker seems a bit self-serving and the reader wonders about this.

To be honest, at times the story seems to be a little loose. There is a subplot where you simply want Zorro to hurry up and get home. Put on that blasted mask, you fox.

Overall, however, the book is good. If you like Zorro, this is a must read.

Ay, Isabel, que se nos van las manos y salen páginas, páginas y más páginas innecesarias. Que sí, que a mí también me gusta el Zorro, que yo te entiendo. Pero aún así, aceptando que a veces hay que estar un poco enamorada de tus personajes y que está bien que se te note... Este libro ha sido demasiado largo para lo que es la historia en sí.

A mí, lo voy a admitir, la idea del Zorro me ha gustado desde que de pequeña vi una serie de dibujos animados sobre él. Es algo romántico, el pensar en un vigilante enmascarado que viene a salvar a los inocentes y de paso va soltando galanterías por ahí. Yo nunca he sido de los Vengadores, me parecen aburridos a más no poder (ya lo siento), pero la idea de la capa y la espada me mola. Sin embargo, y aunque no estoy decepcionada como tal, creo que este libro ha pretendido ser tantas cosas, llegar a tantos temas, contar tantas historias, que se ha sobrepasado y no ha contado ná.

Allende pretendía hacer una narrativa superprofunda del Zorro, una exploración del personaje, pero resulta que a ella lo que le mola es el vigilante enmascarado, en concreto la parte en la que el vigilante enmascarado se cuela por tu balcón en la noche a besarte (fantasía que la propia escritora admitió en una de sus memorias, juraría que La suma de los días) Y ESA PARTE COGE Y LA DEJA PARA EL FINAL. Nos hemos tenido que tragar toda la infancia de Diego (se me hizo eterna, tiene la introducción más larga del mundo), su preadolescencia rara, su adolescencia precoz, y total que termina la novela cuando Diego ya tiene 20 años y es, según Allende, un hombre de verdad. Yo, sinceramente, discrepo un poco. Igual es porque por franja de edad los chicos de 20 me caen más cerca de lo que le caían a ella al escribir, pero puedo garantizar que ningún, absolutamente ningún, chico de 20 años tiene el carisma y la suavidad del Zorro. Así que bueno, ver a Allende proyectar sus fantasías pseudo-sensuales, semi-eróticas, en un chaval al que sabes que le estaba cambiando la voz en su momento y que no tiene ni idea de lo que está haciendo, pues a ver. Ha sido un poquito raro, la verdad. Que no es juzgarla, eh, pero vaya, que podría haber resumido las partes del principio para luego tener más espacio en la novela cuando Diego ya es adulto de verdad y puede hacer cosas más piiiiiiiiiiiiii mejor no digo lo que estoy pensando porque esto es una reseña para todos los públicos. Eso, me entendéis.

Otra cosa que también se me ha hecho raruna es, más allá del realismo mágico que me tenía que haber esperado, cómo trata Allende a las tribus indias nativas de la zona y/o a las mujeres negras de Nueva Orleans: hay un total de cero mujeres no-blancas que no estén unidas a un aura mística, poderosa, conectada con los dioses, la tierra y los poderes mágicos de las hierbas curativas. Y francamente, me ha parecido un poquito fetiche la manera en que lo ha descrito. Que sí, que yo sé que es algo que le mola (lo hizo también en la trilogía del Águila y el Jaguar, si a alguien le suena; es de novela juvenil) pero aquí ha abusado de esto hasta pasarse. Al final, sentaba hasta mal. Y aprovecho para criticar también un poquito el cómo gestionaba precisamente la relación Colono Blanco y Rico vs los demás, el sistema de clases, el tema de la esclavitud, y algunos otros temas que yo creo que no tenía necesidad de tratar tan banalmente (o tratar en general, vaya. Podría haber hablado de otras cosas).

Por cambiar el tono y hablar de algo bueno:
- Confirmo que había mujeres en la novela, con nombres y apellidos, intereses propios, que no estaban ahí para ser el interés romántico de nadie. Para ser una novela donde se habla del novio imaginario de la escritora, muy buen trabajo en la caracterización de todo el mundo.
- La narrativa, por supuesto, impecable. Qué bonito escribe.
- Tiene un humor fino y sutil que me hizo reír más de una vez. Por mucho que me queje de lo laaaaargo que fue el principio, no me aburrí en ningún momento.
- Y por supuesto, es una novela llena de aventuras, algunas más disparatadas que otras pero casi siempre constantes. El ejercicio de imaginación que debió hacer para concebir esta trama, no lo quiero ni imaginar. Que bueno, sí, las aventuras siempre acaban bien mediante un buen Deux ex machina y otras cosas. Pero si quisiera meterme a leer tragedias, no estaría leyendo sobre el Zorro, digo yo.

En fin, esta reseña también se ha hecho muy larga. En resumidas cuentas, sí, me lo he pasado bien, he disfrutado la novela y me ha parecido la mar de entretenida. ¿Pero la recomendaría? Pues más bien no. Me pasa lo de siempre: la no ficción de Allende me parece maravillosa, pero su ficción siempre cojea. 3/5.

بعيدا عن حبي للرواية وإنو هي القراءة الثانية لإلها بعد سنتين تقريبا من القراءة الأولى، إلا إني لاحظت شي ما لاحظته بالمرة الأولى (يمكن لأني تعرفت على إيزابيل أكثر بآخر كم سنة وفهمتها) ويلي لاحظته كان إن زورو بهالرواية كان مقيّد لإلها، حسيت إنو إيزا ما كانت آخدة راحتها بسرد القصة وإنها كانت مقيّدة بحدود الأسطورة وهاد الشي زعجني شوي، رغم إنو كالعادة الحلوة ما قصرت باستغلال قصة نشأة دييغو وتكوّن زورو بسرد تاريخ هديك الفترة يلي بتمتد من قبل ولادة (زورو) لما بعدها وكيف سردت المعاناة المُعاشة.

لا يزال الكتاب كثير جيد وجميل وغنائي ومدهش، ومع ذلك بعتقد إنو إيزا من هدلول المؤلفين يلي بيعملوا بشكل أفضل لما بيبدأو من صفحة فارغة، ما بحكي إنو كان قرار سيء منها إنها اختارت الأسطورة لتبني عليها روايتها وتوصل أفكارها والتاريخ يلي بدها تحكي عنه، لكني مقتنعة جدا إنها كانت شجاعة بما فيها الكفاية للتعامل مع أسطورة زورو وكيف خلتها تتراقص على إيقاعها الخاص.

الرواية كانت مليئة بالشخصيات يلي أثارت اهتمامي، شخصية أمه لدييغو وجدته من ناحية، أخوه بالرضاعة وصديقه برناردو من ناحية ثانية، وما بنسى رفيقته إيزابيل. لكن حسيت إنو إيزا بهالرواية قصرت تجاههم بعكس أعمالها السابقة، كانت على طول بتعطي الشخصيات حقها أو بتقترب من هالشي، بهالرواية كان تركيزها فقط على البطل يلي بالمناسبة كانت عندها نقص واضح بتوصيل جنسه كذكر، كثير واضح إنو يلي كتبت الشخصية أنثى، أو يمكن أنا متعودة على إيزابيل وشخصياتها الأنثوية لهيك ما كثير استوعبت اختيارها وتجسدها بشخصية ذكر هالمرة، بعتقد لو رويت الأسطورة بمنظور امرأة لكانت أجمل وأفضل بمراحل لكن بنرجع لملاحظتي الأولى وهي إنو زورو كان بقيّد إيزابيل بشكل كبير والعتب عليه ما عليها.

Unexpectedly DELIGHTED by this. I forgot how much I love Isabel Allende's writing style. I really enjoy origin stories but I like it even better when they have some kind of spin to them, and this delivers completely. I can't believe I'm having Zorro feelings in 2021 but it's happening and I'm happy about it!

As with all the books I've read by Allende, I found this one really nicely written. There is a flow to her writing which sometimes made the pages of the book fly by. I found myself speeding through certain sections, and not realizing that I'd just read twenty pages in twenty minutes until my lunch break was finished. It's a lovely feeling.

Less lovely was the feeling that at some points of this 600+ narrative, I felt like very little was happening. It was very rare during the story that I was carried away by the plot itself. Quite a bit of it dragged. No, I'm no historical expert by any means, but I just felt like the background explanations just slowed the pace of the story far too much.

One thing that I did appreciate about all the background was how logically and cleverly it built a foundation for the Zorro legend. As a child, I remember watching the black-and-white Zorro TV reruns (though honestly, I couldn't tell you anything about it today) and I recall enjoying the film with Antonio Banderas. What I primarily recall is all the exciting, action-packed swashbuckling. Allende lays the ground for this by showing how Diego learns these all his skills and talents from pirates and gypsies and Native Americans, but it never feels like an 80s training montage. Everything proceeds naturally and makes sense in the end.

Diego himself is described at a sort of distance, and it's always made clear where he's heading. For that reason, I never found myself captivated or concerned with the danger - which is a drawback to this kind of story. You always know the protagonists are going to survive the tale to become legends. That being said, they're good heroes, and my only regret character-wise is that we didn't actually get to spend time with Isabel.

If there were a sequel to this, I think it would be a lot of fun to read, but for the most part, it was just fine. Glad I read it, wouldn't revisit.

Oh, what a great story and a wonderful read!

Όμορφη, ρομαντική, αφελής και συχνά ειρωνική εξιστόρηση των πρώτων χρόνων του Ντιέγκο Ντε Λα Βέγκα, γνωστού και ως Ζορρό (αλεπού).

Η ιστορία ξεκινάει με τη γνωριμία των γονιών του, του Αλεχάνδρο Ντε Λα Βέγκα και μιας μισής Ινδιάνας μισής Ισπανίδας πολεμίστριας που επιτίθεται σε οχυρωμένη από τον Αλεχάνδρο θέση σε ιεαραποστολή. Ερωτεύονται και καρπός του έρωτά τους είναι ο μικρός Ντιέγκο, που οι σκανδαλιές και η γενναιότητά του (συνήθως με τον αχώριστο ομογάλακτο "αδελφό" του Μπερνάρντο) προδιαθέτουν για το ρόλο που θα αναλάβει αργότερα.

Ακολουθεί το πέρασμά του στη Βαρκελώνη όπου πέρα από τις σπουδές του θα μυηθεί και στη σέχτα της "δικαιοσύνης" (την οποία δικαιοσύνη θα συνεχίσει να υπηρετεί με τον τρόπο του σε όλη του τη ζωή), θα γνωρίσει τον έρωτα, την απογοήτευση, έναν εξαίρετο δάσκαλο ξιφασκίας και θα ζήσει ένα διάστημα σαν φυγάς με ρομά, με τους τρόπους των οποίων θα εξοικειωθεί πλήρως. Θα μονομαχήσει, θα παίξει χαρτιά, θα ελευθερώσει αιχμαλώτους πριν την εκτέλεση, θα κάνει έναν ισόβιο εχθρό, θα χαράξει για πρώτη φορά το θρυλικό Ζ και στο τέλος θα επιστρέψει στην πατρική γη της Καλιφόρνιας, όχι όμως πριν πέσει στα χέρια πειρατών και στερηθεί τον έρωτά του.

Στην Καλιφόρνια, βρίσκοντας τον πατέρα του θύμα της αδικίας του εχθρού του, θα αναλάβει δράση για πρώτη φορά ως Ζορρό-φορέας-δικαιοσύνης και θα τα πάει περίφημα, αν και όχι χωρίς τη βοήθεια αγαπημένων του προσώπων.

Το βιβλίο κλείνει με την αποκάλυψη της ταυτότητας του "βιογράφου", σε ένα χαριτωμένο κλείσιμο του ματιού της συγγραφέως προς τον αναγνώστη, που μένει μετέωρος ανάμεσα στην εικόνα ενός Ζορρό καβάλα σε ένα άλογο που υψώνεται στα πισινά του πόδια και σε μια πιο "ώριμη" (με λιγότερη τριχοφυΐα κεφαλής και ίσως με περισσότερους πόνους στις αρθρώσεις), αλλά πάντα παιχνιδιάρικη και μέσα στο πνεύμα της υπεράσπισης της δικαιοσύνης, εκδοχή του.

Οι περιπέτειες του αγαπημένου ήρωα είναι δοσμένες με πολύ όμορφο τρόπο από την Allende και σε κανένα σημείο του βιβλίου ο αναγνώστης δε θα κουραστεί, ακόμη κι αν μερικές επινοήσεις είναι "ευκολίες", ή άλλες εξαιρετικά δύσκολες να τις καταπιεί κανείς. Ο Ζορρό είναι θρύλος και στους θρύλους, ή τουλάχιστον στις εξιστορήσεις των πεπραγμένων τους, τα πάντα επιτρέπονται.

Not less than 5 stars and that is as Allende is incapable of telling a bad story…
her heroically sustained narrative, her lovingly prepared plots and supreme inventions explode in exaltation.
As much as I'm delighted that I ve been enjoying this novel for one week as much as I'm upset that I finished it.
Allende proved that she is one the best novelists ever.

It takes a certain kind of skill to write a boring book about a character like Zorro, and apparently, Isabel Allende possesses such. It also takes a certain brashness to pronounce your protagonist as "fun" in the first paragraph--and several times following that--and then fail to produce any real evidence of it.

I was excited about the prospect of this book--a great pulp hero like Zorro in the hands of someone with Allende's lit cred? It'd have to be great, right?

It took maybe 20-30 pages to disabuse me of that idea. Allende's narrator sets out to tell the origins of Zorro--starting with events years before his parents met, and then proceeds at the pace (and in a style) fit for a medium-sized biography. We're less than 60 pages from the end before a 20-something Don Diego de la Vega returns from Spain to California and begins his career as America's first superhero in earnest. This would be something like making the audience sit through 90 minutes of Aaron Smolinski and Jeff East working on the farm with Glenn Ford and Phyllis Thaxter before Christopher Reeve catches Margot Kidder and the helicopter (and then foils Lex Luthor's big nuclear missile into the San Andreas fault/real estate scam in 15 minutes).

Again, it read like a biography, and an unimaginatively written one at that. He did this and then he did that. He was this adjective, and was that often. Over and over and over--no showing, plenty of telling. For a couple of paragraphs on either side of a section of his life/escapades, the narrator would break in with a little commentary and bordered on developing an engaging voice, but that would disappear within a page. It had to be the slowest 390 page book I've read in years--I kept at it, waiting for her to pull it around once the setup was finished. What a mistake. Save yourself from following in my footsteps.

Every now and then you randomly pick up a book to read and discover a delightful story. Isabel Allende’s Zorro was that kind of book. Her authorized rendering of the childhood, education, pranks, maturation, and transformation of a wealthy young man into the legendary character occurs during significant world events including the Spanish administration of Alta, California and the Peninsular War in Europe. It is obvious that the author did her historical homework as her characters behaved appropriately during difficult political times. The impact of the lifelong friendship between Don Diego de la Vega and his “milk brother” Bernardo is explored in depth as the two grow from infants to collaborating adults. The author also describes the legends of Zorro’s sword, his cape, and his mask - here the good guy wears black.

Em termos culinários, este livro corresponderia a uma bolacha de água e sal (mole, diga-se, por ter sido deixada em cima do balcão) - mata a fome a quem não tem mais que comer.
