This book, which is divided into three parts, started out very well. We had two Smoke Jumpers (forest fire fighters) who both loved the same woman. Julia worked with troubled teens in an "Outward Bound" style. At the end of Part 1, there's a disastrous wild fire, and the consequences affect all their lives. I found Part 3 to be my least favourite and actually skimmed the final 6 chapters. I've read three books by this author, and the order I like them in is The Loop, The Horse Whisperer and this one.

OMG, I loved this stupid, predictable book. Nothing like forbidden love to keep the pages turning, LOL.

This is a story of two former smoke jumpers. One falls in love with the other's girlfriend, and she loves him back. What has to happen? The first guy has to die. This book is too predictable, and also it keeps skipping years and years. I wish I had never come across it. I am finished with Nicholas Evans.

*Wakes up* What? I'm at the last page? How...when? What? I feel like I just started this....I can't remember a single thing.......

All I remember is opening this book up. I read the first couple of chapters and thinking how good this was. I was absolutely hooked. I liked Skye. And then...blackness. I was mindlessly flipping through pages, skimming and just yawning my way through this.

Was this boring? No...it wasn't. I just did NOT care a lick about anything or anyone. My liking of Skye even faded when she became just a side character because Julia and Connor took center stage with their forbidden love and yadda yadda.

I can honestly tell you I have very few memories from this book until the last couple of chapters. Things happen and everyone lives happily ever after. Except for Eddy. Sad.

I wanted to read this book for SO long and I am highly disappointed.

I do not recommend this book. It is covered in cliches and stupid characters who are complete jerks. The ending was too happy for my liking....there needed to be some sadness. I technically finished the book, but between chapter three until the last two chapters, I was a mindless robot and just skimmed and probably slept during it and just kept turning the pages. This really should be marked as a DNF honestly. I'll give this 1 star.

Don't judge a book by the first chapter. After reading gruesome chapter one I thought this is not a book for me. I decided to read one more chapter, well I am glad I did. The storytelling was so vivid I felt like I was on the journey with the characters. I had visited the San Diego Safari Park at the time I was reading the last quarter of the book so I had a partial glimpse and feel of the setting. It was an amazing book and I highly recommend it.

I absolutely loved this book. The second part was a little slow and it just wasn’t going the way you wanted it to, but the third part made up for it.

The story jumped around quite a bit. I liked the part about actual smoke jumping. Good read.

I enjoyed this book more than The Horse Whisperer. The love triangle added to the emotional tension.

This book kind of had two plots (one about smoke jumping and one about politics in Africa) and mid-way through the focus switched from one to the other. Perhaps the author had two books in mind and just couldn't decide. I did really like the romance in the book but this plot switch seemed odd and distracting. And, I couldn't keep up with all the names and places in Africa.

May contain spoilers (but hey the book was a pain to read why not save yourself some trouble)

Hated this book, I mean you could have just made the husband a jerk did you have to make him blind too! And Jeepers did that woman just marry the guy because he was blind!!!? If she thought even for a second that she could possibly have feelings for someone else why the hell didn't she just say no to him in the first place!!!?? Someone else posted in their review that they wanted him to go find another woman who actually loved him, I'm all for that. Other than what I consider extremely lazy plot writing this book was a fast read and I was interested in the fire fighting parts. To be honest I didn't really care about the kids they seemed more like a distraction, maybe because we had to focus on the blind guy. Him being blind and then dying just really pisses me off, would she have left him otherwise? I hate this book and I am currently warming my hands on the fire I've made with it.
