Nexus (Rosy Crucifixion, Book 3), Henry Miller

In Nexus (1959), the final installment, Miller finds himself an outsider in his own marriage, as Mona’s relationship with Anastasia (Jean Kronski) grows, with the pair finally abandoning Miller to travel to Paris. After Mona’s return on her own, the trilogy ends with Miller and his wife departing for Paris. Miller had in mind to write a second volume of Nexus, and made several attempts to complete it. It would have covered his time in France with Mona, their return to New York, and his return to Paris on his own, concluding with him writing the opening lines of Tropic of Cancer at 18 Villa Seurat.

He made several attempts to write the book before ultimately abandoning the undertaking. A rough draft of the abandoned novel, Paris 1928 (Nexus II), an account of his 1928 trip to Paris with Mona, was first published in English in 2012.

Nexus completes Miller's trilogy. At times, this book wanders a little. For the sake of completing the trilogy I powered through. Nexus definitely holds some gems that are worth finishing it to find.

The last book of Miller's "Rosy Crucifixion" trilogy, about his time in New York before embarking for the Paris years of "Tropic of Cancer" and "Tropic of Capricorn" and other more-often-read books of his. This one wraps up nicely, as he comes closer and closer to his big escape to Europe (Mona views it as a vacation, but Miller, being Miller, sees it as oh so much more, naturally).

Nexus is filled with the typical Miller mix of daily living details (always poor and looking for a few coins, books, and drinks) and philosophical phantasmagoria (to use a Miller-ish word) not to mention endless streams of great literature and art. If you liked the first two books, or any Miller for that matter, you'll like this too (and vice versa, if Miller is not to your taste).

I first read Tropic of Cancer 20 or so years ago, and finishing this exhaustive and exhausting trilogy definitely had me feeling a bit sad it was ending, but also relieved to know I could read Cancer again and most of it will probably seem new. And there's always the handful Miller books I haven't read yet.

And if you've read Miller before, you already know to be ready to look up lots of new authors, artists, and vocabulary words, because that's Miller's thing, to be sure.

One final note--Miller's all about the honesty of personal hypocrisy, describing in detail how he drives a panhandler nuts by offering him a quarter, then a dollar, then five dollars, then whatever he wants, then dropping a quarter and telling the panhandler to leave it there for tomorrow. Then picking up the quarter he'd dropped and keeping it, just to surprise/annoy the panhandler when he comes back and finds it gone. Why Miller would do this to someone, and write about it, when the same sort of thing has happened to him many times in many ways is a mystery--but that's Miller.

From Cancer to Nexus, with Nin's Henry and June to complete the picture from a third, outsider's eye. Miller's joie de vivre, pervasive in his texts, is darkened by the biographies of the personages he fed off in order to write: June Mansfield, Jean Kronski, and their regrettable ends... A shame Nexus does not end on a more reflective, self-analytical note.

That being said, the entire story is mesmerising, and somewhat tragic. It will linger in my thoughts for a long time.

it's always a pleasure to read some Miller although I do find I need some time away from him to really enjoy his work..so full of ideas and thoughts are his times that reading one Miller book following another is an activity I don't attempt these days.
There is mention in this book when a character is speaking to the writer herein as to whether a plot is needed and in some ways that sums up this book..there is a narrative as it's a tale of an odd love triangle and living by your wits but mostly it's an exercise in the sharing of thoughts and ideas.
I read book one and two some time back and barely recollect the plot and in time this will happen to this book as it is driven by discussion rather than anything else truth be told.
Sometimes a difficult read but always an interesting one.
