I read this as a teenager. It Motivated me to become a lawyer and a peace advocate. Looking back, I remember a story of endurance, a transition of a fighter to a negotiator, faithfulness in a mission, yet unfaithful to love.

This book is amazing...What a iconic life he had. Few events in his book would be memorable all through my life. The book has taught me so many hard lessons of life. One thing that really bothered & strange was when Madiba & Winnie went for divorce.

This is not just an autobiography of a freedom fighter, but the book stands strong as an eye-opening account of the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. Discrimination coded in law seems too hard to believe, yet it was a harsh reality just three decades ago. It's good to remind ourselves that the world we live in is hard won by people like Nelson Mandela.

It was a good read. I learned that it was always small things that impacted his life the greatest. This book shows that how one has to sacrifice everything one own's if he want to do something for someone else. He always tried to give credit to his coleagues for there collective acheivements.

What an amazing man. His story was both heart-breaking at times but also inspirational. I am amazed by the way he thinks, his care of others & fight for what was right in a time which I can only say was an injustice to black & coloured south Africans.

I listened to this on audio books (read by Danny Glover). I am glad for this as I doubt I would ever have done justice in pronouncing names of people and places mentioned in the book.

I am sure there is a lot more that could have been said around the injustices and treatment of prisoners during this time and with such an injustice, it would have been easy for Mandela to have been negative in his story. But personally I think Mandela's story was beautifully & tastefully written.

The story definitely pulled some strong emotions from sadness and anger that our world could be so cruel and also love for a man full of kindness & courage.

I read this book on the airplane when my family took a trip to South Africa in the summer of 2005. I read several chapters before I got to South Africa. The greatest impact of what I had read in the book was when we visited Robbin Island. I will never forget the experience.

Intimate and powerful. It’s a lot to get through but surprisingly effortless as the book is not just about one man’s journey but a whole country’s struggle and makes for fascinating reading (esp if you’re like me and knew very little about SA history).

A great man who led an inspiring life. His accounts are worth hearing from his POV but his ramblings were often tedious.
