Well, it's hard to review, since it's a compilation of stories of martyrs.
This is a fantastic book, helping us put faces to real persecution. The stories are wonderful and do not read like dry newspaper articles (though most newspaper articles I've read aren't dry, but that's beside the point.) Some accuse it of "emotional appeal." Well, um... IT'S ABOUT PEOPLE BEING KILLED FOR THEIR RELIGION!!!! If you don't react emotionally to these stories, than I fear for you. A good book, showing martyrs from 2000 years ago to the 1990's. Religious persecution didn't end at the signing of the Constitution of the United States.

I found the book uplifting, even though it was about persecution and death. It opened my eyes to the conditions of the believers of Jesus around the globe are facing which the general media fails to report. Great reading. It's a "wow" book.

Worth the read! I have passed this book around to many of my friends and we all love it. These are the encouraging stories of people who have followed Jesus to the end of their lives--and yes I say encouraging. These people died with the joy of Christ and it completely goes in their stories.

This book is an exceptional inspiration!! Filled with historical accounts of exemplary Christians. Story after story of fearless believers and their boldness in face of trials and persecution will motivate and encourage the reader to reach deeper in their love and devotion to our Lord Jesus Christ. What an amazing book! I HIGHLY recommend!

The writing isn't brilliant or professional, and the research/ documentation seems spotty and occasionally suspect, but many of the stories are still powerful. It's amazing to see and hear what people throughout history and into the present have been willing to endure for the sake of their love for Jesus. They deserve the title Jesus Freaks, and I am blessed to follow in their faith tradition, if not in their sacrifices. I appreciated that the stories covered a range of historical eras, into the present, as well as a wide range of geo-political settings and ethnicities.
I think reading this book should be a good reminder to American Christians of what persecution against the church really looks like, and also how badly wrong things tend to go when religions, Christian or otherwise, get political power. The stories set throughout the UK, with "Christians" killing Christians, were an especially good reminder. We don't need power other than the power of our faith, as it's not our job to seek a political kingdom. It's just our job to live faithful to our calling, whatever price that may entail, until our time on Earth is through.
I appreciated the bibliography and recommended reading at the back of the book, even if it did seem spotty and perhaps inadequate as historical resources, and lacking in specific citations within the stories. And I also appreciated the resources provided by VOM about the modern day persecuted church. But this book was printed in 1999, and most of the material is badly out of date, especially politically. And comments about something happening "last year" are bound to go out of date extremely quickly.
Even so, I'll probably read the other Jesus Freaks books. The stories are short and easy to read, so they are great for a daily devotional, as well as a great reminder of the value of our faith. I also intend to do further research, hopefully with some legitimate sources, on the same topic. Foxe's Book of Martyrs, here I come.

This is a difficult read. It is so emotional reading about all the really horrible things Christians in other places have to go through. Took me 2 years to read it. Read a few pages a day. Very thankful for the Country I live in.

Jesus freaks not only opened my eyes to newer beautiful things, but it was a great book of appreciation. I didn't expect how huge all of these little stories are in this book. One by one, each person is dying or suffering because they believe in Jesus and what He did. It really changes your mindset on how much people everyday are just sacrificing their lives because of one guy. Clearly this "guy" is no joke. As you read through the book, more people are fighting, and it just gets more intense. This book gave me unspeakable feelings. I strongly encourage everyone to read it. For people who don't believe in Jesus, when you read this you might decide to change your life and give it to Him and become a Christian. For Christians, this book may encourage you to fight for him or get into some ministries. One thing this book does to everyone, is open their eyes to something new. After reading this, I promise you that you will never be the same. It's your turn to take a look and share it!

Maybe it’s wrong to read stories of burning, decapitation, unjust imprisonment, and torture to my kids during devotion times. I did it anyway, and dare I say we enjoyed it? The stories contained in Jesus Freaks, all true, remind us that our freedoms are not arbitrary, nor are they common. Many people throughout history and even today have died for believing in something other than the current government or authority’s propaganda. Through reading these pages, not only do we appreciate so much more our freedoms, but we see how God’s power manifests itself in the darkest of times. When ordinary people like us will not only purposefully live out the simple, loving, peace-filled yet powerful words of Jesus, but will also willingly die for these words, His message seems to spread all the more. Though we don’t currently fear for our lives in America, these stories gave us a more realistic perspective of the dangers and supernatural joys of faith in dark places.

I was unable to rush through this book. The narratives are so intense and moving that I could bear it only a few pages at a time. I believe it would be much easier to be an outright martyr than to be tortured, especially tortured over a long period of time. I wonder about myself, about my dedication and courage. So ... not everyone in the book is a martyr, but those who were tortured and later released also have my utmost respect and gratitude. They kept the faith. My edition of the book had a lot of updates through 2011, and there is a website link to use to learn about more recent happenings. Some of the requests for prayer for the persecuted, listed by country in the back, had not been updated ... for instance, Iraq and Saddam Hussein. The earliest martyr written about was, of course, Stephen as written in the book of Acts.

The history of William Tyndale and the Plowman Bible is a rich part of Christian history that you will want to know. This section ends, "Tyndale's translation was so accurate that 75 years later, when the King James Version of the Bible was published, it was based largely upon Tyndale's work. In fact, about 90 percent of the words remain exactly as he wrote them!"

Links are provided and suggestions listed for those who are ready to involve themselves more in praying for or assisting international Christian prisoners.

Isaiah 42:6-7 "I am the LORD, I have called You in righteousness, I will also hold You by the hand and watch over You, And I will appoint You as a covenant to the people, As a light to the nations, To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the dungeon And those who dwell in darkness from the prison.
