12yo: 10/5 stars
14yo: -736 stars (So arbitrary. He loved it.)
40yo: 5 stars (A nice normal number of stars.)

Lots of stuff happening in this one. I liked that Darren’s reactions were often mature and often quite like a teenager. Very relatable for teens, which is funny considering it’s guaranteed that no one would ever find themselves in Darren’s situation.

We had lots of fun speculating on future plots. We will definitely keep going in the series. No stopping now.

This book was similar to all of the other books in this series because it had the same storyline as all the other books. The reason I read 5 of the 12 or 13 books in the series is because the books are so shocking. The reason that I gave this book a 5 star rating is because at all of the end of the books they say TO BE CONTINUED............ then they show the first few pages of the NEXT book in the series so the next one is The vampire prince. The reason That I read so many horror books is because whenever I was in 5th grade my teacher put scary stories on the projecter and now I'm interested in scary books. Also the endings were good like I just said they leave the reader wanting more. The Characters are also listed and placed very well. In his storyline he makes and loses best friends like in the first book he has his friend Steve then loses him when he becomes THE VAMPIRES ASSISTANT.

Yay loved re-reading this one :D It's my favourite of the series. Loved the reappearance of the wolves, and the betrayal by Kurda was rather intense! I didn't remember that one. But the descriptions of the trials would have freaked me out! My paranoia and my imagination would have made me crazy. Darren's so brave.

Since being discovered by the vampire council, Darren is forced to take five trials of initiation to prove himself being strong enough to be a half vampire. Most full vampires don't even pass the five trials, if Darren is only a half vampire then will he ever be able to pass all the trials?

This book was great because it finally shows Darren's strength of being a half vampire and how sometimes it can be pretty tough. What is great about this book is the trials he takes are so hard that they're impossible for a human to do.

If you are like me and love vampire books and excitement then I recommend this book.

This might be my favourite instalment of The Saga of Darren Shan out of all of them.

In this book, Darren must face five horrific trials by order of the Vampire Council to see if he is worthy enough to join them. If not, he will die - if the trials don't kill him first.

This was a brilliant book! Shan's writing flows so perfectly, it's hard not to be dragged into the story. His words kept me hooked on every single page, and I could not stop turning the pages until I had no more to read. The descriptions in this still haunt me, of the horrific trials Darren has to face, and I still remember how vivid they are, the pictures my imagine created still seered into my mind from years ago. I cannot forget anything from this book. The characters we follow are still so developed and receive even more development as the series goes on, which is so beautiful to see.

Honestly, I recommend the whole Darren Shan series to anyone, and definitely to read up to this one, at least. This is the one that made everything so much more intense for myself, and was the one that made me sell my soul to Darren Shan as an author.

This book was again, like all Darren Shan books amazing, action packed and full of adrenaline, tension and pride. It was about the trials that Darren had to face in order to not shame himself and Mr Crepsley he had to complete the challenges that were chosen so they could both regain the pride from Mr Crepsley blooding a child. The scenes of the trials were amazing in this book, so we'll described and the atmosphere so easily set that you felt the adrenaline and terror that Darren felt facing them and making you sit on the edge of your seat to cheer him on. I have to admit I was disgusted and annoyed that Darren decided to escape rather than face the punishment of death I thought his character had become better than the coward he began as.

Throughout the trials Darren doesn't have much courage or confidence in himself yet his friends do, they help encourage and train him so he's able to face them. As he does each trial he finds his stronger side, his courage I started to admire him until he decided to run rather than face death doing that he showed his coward side. The more trials he does the more the vampires around him start to support him and not bet against him. He faces the aquatic maze and after intense training with the games master he finds he knows exactly what to do, even if he takes longer than he should, a lot of people are surprised that he manages to find a way out. The next challenge he faces is the hall of fire, the description of that scene is so detailed it feels as if your there living it with him, when he comes out of there he is delirious and severely burnt. He then faces two boars and has to fight them to the death, this take a long time and he manages to kill one but fails to kill the other then the little person "Hellcat" his friend steps in because he can't face seeing Darren die, but by doing this Darren fails the challenge and faces the hall of death.
