I can see why this captivated me so much as a middle school kid. It ticks all of the right boxes, and is such a breezy, fun read which holds up surprisingly well.

There is nothing more I like than vampires, so a different twist to these ancient (and arguably overdone) beings is always enjoyable! I first discovered this series when I was in 8th grade; I finally found the whole series in paperback and am rereading them!

Darren Shan had a normal, enjoyable, happy life. Great friends, loving family, a little sister whom he could trust and confide in... He's a boy one can relate to, and Steve, his best friend, makes things interesting (and tense).

The adventures that unfold in Darren's life start innocently enough, kids having fun, doing daring and impulsive (and rather stupid) things that ultimately spiral into unforeseen events they can't undo. A Living Nightmare opens the door to a strange new world of night, one that Mr. Crepsley not only invites him to join, but eagerly welcomes him in.

It's a fantastic opening to a long series. I don't remember most of the plot but I can't wait to get to my favorite books and journey with Darren and Mr. Crepsley through their weird vampiric tale. I highly recommend this to people who love vampires. (My 12 year old brother loved this series; he read all 12 books in less than a week!)

Also, I found the audiobook on Hoopladigital.com and it's fantastic! The first go around I read it as an American adventure, as I'm American, but somehow when it's read with an English accent, it makes it all the more exciting for me! If you're an audiobook fan, this will be a great experience for you!

انتشارِ «دراکولا» در سال 1897 را می‌توان سرآغازی بر داستان‌هایِ خون‌آشام‌ها دانست. البتّه قاعدۀ نانوشته‌ای که داستان‌هایِ جهان‌ساز (جهان‌ساز به معنایِ آفرینشِ جهانی داستانی و خاص غیر از جهانِ حقیقی در پسِ جهان‌بینیِ خاصّ مؤلّف) از آن پیروی می‌کردند، دراکولا را نیز مستثنی نساخت و عموماً داستان‌هایِ خون‌آشامی پس از دراکولا نقاطِ قوّتِ آن را کسب نکردند. منظور از این قاعدۀ نانوشته، ضعفی است که پیروانِ هر بن‌مایۀ داستانی غالباً به آن دچار می‌شوند و بالطبع در پیش‌بردِ داستانشان نه تنها امتیازی از جهان‌بینیِ اوّلیّه کسب نمی‌کنند، بلکه غالباً ایده‌هایشان با اقبالِ خاصّی هم مواجه نشده و حتّی از اسلافِ خود نیز پیشی نمی‌گیرند. چنین قاعده‌ای را حتّی در جهان‌بینی‌هایِ آخرالزمانی (که به‌اصطلاح مدرن‌تر و قابلِ ارتجاع‌ترند) هم‌چون داستان‌هایِ زامبی‌ها (بعد از رابرت کرک‌من) و داستان‌هایِ جادوگران (بعد از رولینگ) به وضوح می‌توان مشاهده کرد.

در این بین، دارن شان سوژۀ «خون‌آشام‌ها» را برایِ بسطِ ایدۀ خود انتخاب کرده است. امّا قاعدۀ مزبور برایِ او هم صادق بوده و اتّفاقاً از نمونه‌هایِ بارزِ آن گردیده است. سردرگمیِ دارن شان برایِ آفرینشِ جهان‌بینیِ خاصّ خود از اشباح (بخوانید خون‌آشام‌ها) در نقطه‌به‌نقطۀ اثرش از ابتدا تا انتها به چشم می‌خورد. اشباحی که دارن شان قصدِ پرداختن به آن‌ها را دارد، نه مهابت و در اقتدارِ دراکولا را دارند و نه خباثت و پلیدیِ موجوداتی مشوّه و منفور به‌واسطۀ آشامیدنِ خونِ انسان‌ها را. دارن شان در آنِ واحد قصد دارد از سبعیّتِ خون‌آشامی وجهه‌ای اخلاقی، اصلاح‌گر و حتّی دوست‌داشتنی بسازد. جدا از این‌که این عناصر چه‌قدر از لحاظِ طبعِ بشری در کنارِ یک‌دیگر قابلِ سازشند، دارن شان در درست پرداختن به چیزی که خود در پیِ القایِ آن است نیز به‌شدّت ضعیف عمل کرده است. از اشباح تنها تابوت، شب‌گریزی و نیاز به خون را عاریت گرفته است و خصوصیّاتِ باطنیِ آن‌ها چون بینش، هدف و رفتار را رها کرده است.

قسمتِ اوّل از مجموعۀ «قصّه‌هایِ سرزمینِ اشباح» با این حساب تنها به‌وسیلۀ خرده‌پی‌رنگ‌ها، تعلیق‌ها و فضاسازیِ مخصوصِ ژانرِ وحشت که غالباً برایِ قشرِ جوان و نوجوان لذّت‌بخش است به جلو رانده می‌شود. آنچه سبب می‌شود تا خواننده این قسمت را به پایان ببرد و در طلبِ قسمت‌هایِ بعدیِ مجموعه برآید، نه لذّتِ کشفِ ماهیتیِ دیدگاهِ نویسنده از پسِ اشباحِ ساخته‌شده توسّطِ او و یا پی بردن به چیستی و چراییِ اشباح از جهان‌بینیِ مؤلّف که صرفاً دریافتنِ عاقبتِ «دارن شان» نوجوان با «استیو لئوپارد» است. یعنی صرفاً یک ایدۀ داستانیِ ساده برای ایجادِ تعلیق در مخاطب امّا این بار با پوششی از اشباح صرفاً برایِ ایجادِ یک پس‌زمینۀ هیجان‌انگیز در اذهان هرچند کم‌عمق و بی‌کارکرد در معنا.

و در انتها از این نکته نمی‌توان گذشت که برخلافِ مجموعۀ «حماسۀ لارتن کرپسلی» که بعد از این مجموعه منتشر شده است، دارن شان همۀ این کاستی‌ها را به بهایِ گزافیِ متقبّل شده است که حتّی درصورتِ تغییرِ تمامیِ نقایصِ سابقِ اثر و تبدیلِ آن‌ها به نقاطِ قوّتِ کافی برایِ ارائۀ جهان‌بینیِ خودش به مخاطب باز هم اسراف به نظر می‌رسد و آن استفاده از شخصیّتِ نوجوان - کودکی است که به اجبار تن به شبح شدن می‌دهد. درصورتی‌ که به همین مسئله در مجموعۀ «کرپسلی» بسیار اندیشمندانه‌تر و اخلاقی‌تر پرداخته شده است. چراکه شخصیّتِ کرپسلی علی‌رغمِ سنّ کمی که هنگامِ پذیرشِ ورود به دنیایِ اشباح را دارد، بدونِ اجبار به این قضیّه تن در می‌دهد. جدا از این‌که شخصیّتِ لارتن کرپسلی در ابتدایِ این مجموعه کمی هیولایی به تصویر کشده شده است که در مجموعۀ «کرپسلی» در برخورد با انسان‌هایِ دیگر نشانی از آن‌ها نیست. این ممکن است حاصل از پختگی و یا بازخوردی باشد که نویسنده پس از انتشارِ قصّه‌هایِ سرزمینِ اشباح کسب کرده است، هرچند خودش از لحاظِ اخلاقی به آن پای‌بند نباشد.

This book was totally awesome. At first I thought that this book would be boring, but then the main character, Darren Shan and his friend Steve went to a freak show called, "Cirque Du Freak..." I was totally psyched to get into this book! When they went to the freak show it took me by surprise. To be honest I was a little bit scared. The plot about this book is really cool. It all begins with two best friends that live in London, United Kingdom. Darren Shan is the main character and his best friend is Steve Leonard "Leopard".
That is where the suspense kicked in. All of a sudden there friend Allen comes running up to them and starts talking about how his older brother found a flyer about a freak show. I was so into the book that in my head I was right there with them when to their surprise he pulls out the flyer... There was white with black letters across it saying “Cirque Du Freak.” It was greasy and it smelled gross. It said when and where to get the tickets. From here the suspense started growing fast!
So Steve and Darren went to the freak show. The characters made my imagination really work to make this scene real in my mind. There were so many cool but freaky acts, like Wolf Boy and Hans Hands. One of the coolest acts was Mr.Crepsley and the biggest spider in the world, Madam Octa. Darren was so shocked about how big she was, he couldn’t take his eyes off her. Steve on the other hand well, he couldn’t take his eyes off of Mr.Crepsley.
This is where the biggest plot twist happened. At the end of the show Steve told Darren to go and he would catch up with him. But Darren didn't listen and he went up onto the balcony where nobody could see him. Then he saw Steve in the middle of the stage looking for someone. All of a sudden Mr.Crepsley walks up behind him then Steve asks to become a VAMPIRE! I couldn’t stop reading at this point because of these crazy twists.
The ending is the most unsuspected part of the story. While we expected Steve to kill Darren, along with Mr.Crepsly, more twists at the end of this book leave us wanting to know the rest of the story. Clearly there are more books to read! I can’t wait!

Interesting first book. I have seen these on the shelves in the library since I was a teenager so of course I thought it finally time to read them. Very action packed always moving and doing something. I might have to see where this all leads to.

I found this in the audible membership last week. It’s obvious how much of a hermit I am since I had never heard of this series, nor the film. Film-wise it doesn’t appear that I’m missing anything. The books, however, are quite cute.

The story was not what I had expected. I didn’t realize it was a YA book until I got into it. I liked it anyhow, though this isn’t my usual thing. All of the characters are charming and not overly innocent. I’m excited to continue the series.

And those are my boring thoughts on a nice little book.

This was an unbelievably fun book. It has been compared to Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes and Stephen King's Salem's Lot...both of which are on my all-time favorite, "read over and over again" list. The book is classed as YA (middle school kids will love it)...however it's story is ageless...especially if you are a horror fan. The characters are so alive...even those that really aren't. I'm not a spider fan in any way, but I loved Mr. Crepsley's trained...and very poisonous spider, Madame Octa. I understand there is a movie of this first book and will have to look for it.

کتاب سریک عجایب نوشته دارن شان اینگونه شروع میشود:وقتی بچه بودم خیلی خوشم می آمد که از چیزی بترسم.
وقتی نه ساله شدم،مامان و بابا یک رتیل کوچک به من دادند.آن رتیل خیلی بزرگ نبود،سمی هم نبود ولی بزرگ ترین هدیه ای بود که تا آن موقع گرفته بودم.
اما یک روز من یک کار مسخره کردم...
این جملات باعث شد روزهای ۱۳-۱۴ سالگی من با دارن شان و دنیای تخیلیش بگذره...اون موقع ها نمیذاشت شبا بخوابم... ادامه داستان تو خوابم اتفاق میفتاد... داداشم که هم اتاقیم بود از هیجانات و سروصداهای تو خوابم همیشه کلافه میشد:)))

اولین کتاب مجموعه سرزمین اشباح رو گوش کردم.
با اینکه داستان های دارن شان رو دوست دارم و این کتاب هم برام یادآور مجموعه کرپسلی بود و خاطره انگیز شد اما کلا به این کتاب ها تا الان بیشتر از سه ستاره ندادم. حس میکنم کتاب های چهار و پنج ستاره ای که قبلا دادم خیلی خفن تر بودن و نمیتونم اینو در اون حد قرار بدم.
البته خیلی از شنیدنش لذت میبرم و واقعا خوش میگذره. کل جاده اصفهان نایین رو با این کتاب گذروندم و اولین بار بود توی جاده تونستم کتاب گوش بدم و خوابم نبره

Ah. Cirque Du Freak. One of my all time favorites. I cant say enough about these books.
Do NOT judge a series by its first book. Sure its good, but you dont realize its AMAZING until a few books in. But all epics are like that, right? And yes. This is an epic. And it is epic. So if you have read the first, liked it but didnt want to read the other ones immediantly, then I say- DO IT!!!
What is it about? Vampires, vampaneze, wolves, freaks, witches, wizards, romance, death, twists, surprises, history, future, magic, AMAZINGNESS. The journey starts off in a small town with a kid name Darren Shan. (yes that is the name of the author) He and his friend, Steve, secretly go to a freak show in town. Perhaps the only one left in modern day America. They see amazing acts that will totally freak and gross you out. The last performer, Mr. Crepsley and his amazing spider, are what really gets the story going. Both boys claim that he is a vampire they saw in a book they read. After the show, Darren leaves but Steve stays. Darren comes back and watches Steve ask Mr. Crepsley to turn him into a vampire where Mr. Crepsley refuses. Before they leave, Darren steal Mr. Crepsley spider. A highly poisinous one. But the thing is, Steve dosent know Darren saw the scene with thet vampire, and Steve dosent know that Darren stole the spider. When Darren shows Steve the spider, the spider bites Steve and only Mr. Crepsley could possibly have the cure.
I am not going to say anymore about the book, so you will have to read it to find out what happens, because it is worth reading.
