Tunnels of Blood (Cirque du Freak #3), Darren Shan
Tunnels of Blood is the third novel of twelve in The Saga of Darren Shan by Darren Shan. In this book, the history of the vampires is explained to a small bit, and introduces the clan of the Vampaneze, which will become one of the major focuses of the story. This is also the final book of the Vampire Blood trilogy and where Darren's loyalty and trust in Mr. Crepsley is put to the test.

This continues to be a fun, dumb series, and I like the new additions to the vampire lore. Wasn't a huge fan of the villain, though. He was a hammy, over-the-top type of bad guy, but the mildly annoying kind rather than the enjoyable kind.

Wow what can I say, after the others in the series this definitely became more intense, darker and more action packed. Darren seemed to have finally adjusted to the fact that he is a vampires assistant he's taking on the role more now, helping where he can at the cirque but then when they leave with Evera to go with them on an adventure they don't know much ago because Mr Crepsley is being quite secretive, going out at night without disclosing where he's going or what he's doing. Evera and Darren don't notice this at first as they're too busy enjoying life outside of the cirque du freak, shopping and well in Darren's case finding a girlfriend and learning how to date, all until a news report causes them to question exactly where Mr Crepsley is doing and what it is he's being so secretive about. They form a sleuthing team and begin following him, all until one night where he finally shows what he's been doing but they never expected that he was going to be trying to capture a loony vampriss or fail miserably either.

Darren seems a lot more confident in this book, in himself and in his role as a vampires assistant, he seems to have got closer with Evera whilst they were away from the cirque they seem almost like brothers rather than friends and when they're working together to track Mr Crepsley they're bouncing off each other and seem to share some banter. Darren finally meets someone cute and playful and well in comes Debbie, they get to know each other pretty well and get together which makes Darren nervous hesitant and quite sweet. His embarrassment and seeing him in this way kind of shows you that he's exactly like a normal teenage boy and that makes him more human and more relatable, I like his character more in this book because he shows slightly more of his real self, although I have to admit his crying out and whining is quite annoying.

Evera when he leaves the cirque du freak to go with Darren is naturally nervous and shy to begin with as that's who he is but as they spend more time together alone and away from the cirque he seems to find some confidence and really starts to joke and play around with Darren at times because of his nature he seems quite shy and reluctant to stand out.

I'll definitely be reading the next book in the series.

It's nice seeing the relationship between Darren and Mr. Crepsley continue to grow and change. They both seem to keep being surprised by the other. I hope Evra is in more books too! I like his friendship with Darren.

3.5/5 overall

Like the others, this was a fast paced book. I took some time on and off to read through it but actual reading time amounts to 5 days max.

Quick tldr: our main characters hunt to chase down a crazed vampire. His hideout is in the sewer system under a city and Darren and Larten both work separately and then together to find and stop this heathen. There’s also a bit of middle grade romance thrown in.

Overall, it was a fun read. The plot is ~mostly~ self contained and wraps up neatly at the end. The major plot points were predictable and definitely felt like a middle grade/YA book at times. Other times, the gore/horror elements elevate that reading level a bit. The plot wasn’t super complex but the climax was pretty interesting and I didn’t want to put the book down towards the end.

Definitely liked the first two books more but this one starts to introduce more of the vampires’ culture and how the society works. We get introduced to the clan of Vampaneze who are a culturally different group of vampires who kill their prey when they feed versus vampires who do not kill and take only what they need. There are two different societies for these two types and I know they become pivotal in the next books. I’m interested to see where the series goes from here!

Book Report Guidelines – Good Reads
Name of book: Tunnels of Blood
Author: Darren Shan
Pages: 224
Genre: Fiction
Reading Level of book:

Exposition (4-6 sentences)
Darren has to go on an adventure with Mr. Crepsley. Mr Crepsley has business to do in a small town. Darren did not want to go because he did not want to leave the circus and his best friend Evra, the Snake Boy. Mr. Crepsley said that Evra can come to accompany Darren. Darren was so excited he went to ask Evra. Evra wanted to go, but he had to stay and take care of his snake, but then they just found someone else to take care of it.

Conflict: (4-6 sentences)
Mr. Crepsley was out most of his nights. Evra and Darren were curious on where Mr. Crepsley went at night, but they didn’t care too much, because it was Christmas time. Darren wanted Evra to have the best Christmas ever. One night they got suspicious and they followed Mr. Crepsley. Darren saw a creature he had never seen before. It was purple, and had red spots all over. Evra saw what it looked like, and he knew it was a Vampaneze.

Climax: (4-6 sentences)
Mr. Crepsley told them that was Murlough, one of the main Vampaneze and he had been killing innocent people from where he grew up. Mr. Crepsley was hunting Murlough down to see what he was doing. Murlough captures Evra. Mr. Crepsley and Darren plan to get Evra back, and kill Murlough.

Resolution: (4-6 sentences)
Mr. Crepsley and Darren go through the tunnel of blood, and Mr. Crepsley fakes an injury. Murlough finds Darren and takes him to where Evra is. Murlough was threatening Darren, saying he was going to suck the blood out of Evra. Darren said that he knows another family that is much juicer. When Murlogh follows Darren to the house, he walks into a trap, and is killed by Mr. Crepsley.

Choose a theme in your book and compare to any piece of literature we have read in class. What is similar? What is different? What have you learned about the human experience? (7-10 sentences)

A theme present in both Tunnels of Blood, and Romeo and Juliet is how devious people can be when they are fighting for something. In Tunnels of Blood, Darren and Mr. Crepsley thought of a plan to save their friends. In Romeo and Juliet, they plan a way for them to be together without anyone knowing. The difference is Romeo and Juliet died, and did not get what they wanted. Darren and Mr. Crepsley didn’t die. In fact, they saved their friends, and defeated Murlough. These stories are similar to the human experience because you don’t get what you want, but you get what you deserve.

Content warning: Animal Death/Murder

I keep telling myself that I'm going to stop reading this series, but here I am finishing the third one and already about to start the fourth one... I can't help it. This series is just so addicting even though it isn't the best series in the world or anything like that.

This one was the best book in the series so far. It had a lot more suspense and happy scenes than the previous two books. A new character was introduced that I absolutely fell in love with and luckily they didn't die, so thank heavens I can have a favorite character in this series finally that isn't dead.

I'm still extremely shocked that this is a middle grade book and that Google recommends this series for kids who are 9-12 years old. This series and especially this book are pretty scary and gruesome. Several scenes in this book had my heart racing and I genuinely felt fear. I can handle stuff like World War Z and Supernatural, so I thought I wouldn't be scared by a middle grade horror book, but I was surprised by this book and how much it scared me.

I have one massive complaint about this series, which is that it lacks diversity. There are barely any female characters and of the few female characters in the book, none of them are particularly strong. They are either side characters that no action happens to or they have to be saved by the men. There also was no character that wasn't white until this book. I get that this series was published a while ago, but I still expected more diversity...
